Nick Jonas's Diabetes Story
Nick Jonas was just beginning his time in a band with his brothers when he began dealing with cold like symptoms, weight loss, bad attitude, and more symptoms. He went to the doctor with his parents, and discovered that his blood sugar was incredibly high--rapidly approaching 800. While staying in the hospital for a few days, he learned that he had diabetes, and was overwhelmed with the news. Nick has Type I diabetes, but those with Type II can still learn from his experiences!
As he learned more about the disease and how to manage it, he made the decision to be very public about it, because he knew it would be encouraging for those who he was able to connect with on stage to be able to relate to his journey if they too were afflicted with the disease.
As someone living with diabetes, Nick has given a lot of advice to others learning about and living with diabetes:
- Understand that it is a full life change, and that it will be difficult. You will eventually adjust, even if you don't think you can survive this way at first.
- Learn about how your body, specifically, reacts to exercise and carbohydrates. Even though he gets a ton of exercise on stage, he also plays golf and other games because he has found it helps him.
- Rely on your family and doctors more than you want to; don't be afraid to ask for help. You don't need to go through this alone, and you shouldn't.
With these tips, Nick thinks that anyone can find the perfect balance for managing their diabetes without becoming too discouraged.
