'Train to Busan' as Critique of Korean Society

I still haven't been able to see Train to Busan for myself, but I found this article on NPR to be really interesting!

It doesn't ruin any plot points (other than the fact that there is a zombie apocalypse which I'm pretty sure we could gather from the trailer...)

According to the article:

Without giving too much of the story away, the film blames corporate callousness for the death toll. The government covers up the truth — or is largely absent. And the crew? Rather than rescue passengers, it follows the wishes of a businessman.

Sewol Ferry Reference:

These themes are particularly resonant in South Korea, which in 2014 faced national tragedy after 300 people, mostly teenagers, died when a ferry overturned in the sea.
Investigators found the ferry's corporate owners overloaded it to save money. And the captain and crew got into lifeboats without rescuing passengers.
News media, toeing the government line, originally reported that everyone survived, blamed rescuers for not working hard enough (when in reality the government refused to let them go into the water and rescue the children), etc. The Korean president's whereabouts on that day are still unexplained.

Then the MERS Outbreak:

Last year, as Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, spread in South Korea, the government wouldn't share key information about where patients were being treated, where it started, and how officials would contain the outbreak.
The government refused to communicate with the public, so the Seoul mayor had to go against the president and form his OWN plan to fix the problem. As a result, he's now in the running for next president (since Koreans have lost all respect or trust in the current pres)

I mean from what I've been told, it's been showed at a select few places here in the US just no where near me 😭😭😭 I've only seen clips but I really wanna watch it cause it seems so interesting. Even if it is a zombie movie 😩😩😩
I've seen it.. It was so awesome..
Train to Busan is one of my favorite movie of all time. It was that good!! The cast had some amazing actors that you could relate to. It was really engaging and powerful. I highly recommend it. I was one of the lucky few who got to watch it on the big screen but no matter. It is a must watch!!! You won't regret it. I love love this movie.
really?? where were you able to watch it? :)
I watched it at the movie theater. AMC theater at Alderwood Mall. It was the last day they were showing it so I was pretty lucky.
I'm really excited to see this movie because of i fans gong yoo and follow imagery on the net
I have no way of seeing it until it gets subbed online. 😞 But I'm not surprised if it does criticize the government. They haven't exactly done much right in the way of disasters and it's known that businessmen rule and news follows money.

Korean Winter Street Foods
Korea is proud of its food, but it REALLY proud of its street food. There are different foods depending on the season, and I have to say that winter is the best. Here's a list of foods you MUST TRY if you get the chance: 군고구마 (kun go-gu-ma) 군 means "roasted" and 고구마 is Korean sweet potato. The potato is roasted in a huge barrel oven, then handed to you with the skin still on. It's your job to peel it and eat the sweet goodness inside. You can buy an entire bag if you want! 호떡 (ho-ddeok) 호떡 is sort of a pancake/donut combination. It is fried dough filled with cinnamon, sugar, and occasionally nuts. It is flattened into a pancake shape and handed to you in a tiny paper cup. Be careful with the first bite because the inside are often boiling hot! (There are also vegetable versions but the dessert version is much better in my opinion!) 군밤 (kun bam) We just learned that 군 means roasted and now we learn another word: 밤 means chestnut! Just like in New York where there are roasted nut stands everywhere around Christmas time, the cold weather brings out the roasted chestnut vendors. 계란빵 (kye-ran bbang) 계란 means egg while 빵 means bread so voila! Egg bread! The bread part is similar to corn bread, but a little less corn-y and the egg is steamed on top to make a really, really delicious combo. It's my favorite street food after 군고구마 :D 호두과자 (ho-du kwa-ja) The small of this is unnnnbelievable! 호두 means walnut and 과자 means cookie or snack. Therefore 호두과자 is a walnut cookie! They are shaped like walnuts and filled with sweet red bean. You can buy these by the bag full too! 회오리감자 (hwae-o-ri kam-ja) LOOK AT THESE THINGS! They are called 회오리감자 because 회오리 means tornado and 감자 means potato. Behold the potato tornado! I have NO idea how you eat these :) Have you guys tried any of these? Which are your favorite? @NysA @xanderskissme @AmbieB @Jiyongixoxo @BabySheep @phantomsluvr @Rhia @VixenViVi @JohnEvans @RobertMarsh @ElizabethT @ArmyofKookie @shantalcamara @KittyKpop @jannatd93 @cthulu @HarperKennett @musicundefined9 @DekaraMiller @Mahealani @kpoplove89 @tannyo @IMNII @kpopisnylife @KoreanLove2 @lawtont @baileykayleen @oceanseokjin @Sammie99522 @RoyallyPrincess @heidichiesa @asterkimchee @CurrySoop @malibella @puppycatX0X0 @notgucci3 @Lizzeh @reallychelsea @JorgeRAMME @adikiller @blazinpurplehl @kvnguyen @lupemontserrat @ParkMinRin13 @peytoncarter2 @aguileragissel @FallingByeol @adritha13 @toughcookie @TesneemElAlami @VWolf12XOXO @ToyaH @aleciaLOVES @no5alive @AnnahiZaragoza @TravelSizedGirl @kthyl @Adetoro @linzi0302 @hahabts @primodiva93 @cindystran @Saeda1320 @misssukyi @preeta @Yearnin2learn @DorisMay27 @iforisabelle @TLeahEdwards @robertakm64 @azaraa @JeanNwagbuo @aliahwhbmida @WiviDemol @ariana2k @sosoaloraine23 @hisundays @3mmY4 @sukkyongwanser @asterkimchee @misssukyi @MandySpaulding @LatoyaHudson @Claymorex @SaraHelguero @thatkdramalover @sierradimes @TokkiGwiyomi @AnelVega @KaiTakashima @UKissMeKevin @jemitza @VWolf12XOXO @HuonTreeRoo @lovebluecolor @kel53 @JezziCrypt @LysetteMartinez @Fleurdemai00 @oxSoZeroxo @k0reanbbyq @ceramoore3 @YessicaCardenas @Kuramariin @jannatd93 @herreravanessa9 @WiviDemol @VixenViVi @Roxy1903 @NiaLuv19 @kmayong @Baekyeol27 @9thMuse @Ilikepancakes @CandaceJordan @RobertMarsh @KiKi29 @Rhia @AnnahiZaragoza @YGWinner @EllieDean @LizaNightshade @panouvang123 @sherrysahar @mistymaity @GuerlyReyes @maralatto @shantalcamara @paszikelly @SerenaMcG @unbreakable1109 @Diablo6 @YessicaCardenas @Tigerlily84 @JorgeRAMME @Bose @AegyoBunny @VivianCrespoMed @Airess95 @SHINee808 @DaisySalazar @Pickles440 @BryAnnaAhrens @CloverShadows @JordanShuler @ChrystalA @Diajuni @minsangu @TatyTheTot @GraceWatson @NickySerban @Sinique @AnaMata7397 @nightcoreanimen @KarlythePanda66 @KellyOConnor @trashlord @hyolouxx @Sarahwifi @JayDay @nettaj1013 @Miyukichan @XergaB20 @pharmgirlerin @JasmineWilliams @toughcookie @warjeensuleiman @DasiaB @talimarks @ckienitz @KeyBoss @ChristiMarie @YokoUdoran @hayesfordaze @KagamiTaiga @malibella @ocherrylimeadeo @DjKpop12 @reyestiny93 @ZeeRow

If BTS Were in Boys Over Flowers
Now, I think there are a lot of things wrong with the plot of BoF (mainly the boys treat Jan-di like crap) but its still funto imagine it as a less problematic drama. Here's who I'd cast! Gu Jun Pyo - Suga The leader of the F4 and heir to the Shinhwa Group, one of the biggest companies in South Korea. He is hot-tempered and believes that there is nothing that money can't buy. Though he's unable to express his feelings, deep down, he has a heart of gold. He torments Jan-di after she stands up to his bullying ways, but ends up falling in love with her and will do anything to protect her. Yoon Ji Hoo - V A member of the F4 and the grandson of a former president of Korea. He has a driving phobia after being involved in a car accident that killed his parents and left him the only survivor. He is initially in love with his childhood friend Seo-hyun, who helped him overcome his social anxiety. Calm and gentle, his musical talent catches Jan-di's attention and she begins to develop feelings for him. So Yi Jung - Jungkook A member of the F4 and a skilled potter. His family owns the country's biggest art museum. After losing his first love to his brother, he becomes a Casanova. He eventually changes his playboy ways when he realizes that he likes Ga-eul. Song Woo Bin A member of the F4, his family runs the country's largest construction company, which Woo-bin later admits has strong connections to organized crime. However, he has excellent business sense and is very charismatic. He's a super nice guy that happens to be a gangster lol and of course RM, Jin, and Jimin are the dad, mom, and little brother :) How would you cast BOF?
Korean Movie Club: Silenced
Trigger warning: Physical and sexual abuse of minors. The plot: Kang In-ho (Gong Yoo) is a new art teacher at Benevolence Academy, a deaf school for children (Based on the real-life Gwangju Inhwa School). He's excited to teach his new students, but they all seem afraid of him and even scared. In-ho does not give up, and eventually the students start to open up to him - and tell him horrifying things. The children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, he soon realizes the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth According to its summary: It is based on actual events that took place at Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired, where young deaf students were the victims of repeated sexual assaults by faculty members over a period of five years in the early 2000s The aftermath: The film looks at both the crimes, as well as the legal battle that followed. It showed the true story that the teachers who ABUSED THEIR STUDENTS were let off with minimal punishment. The nation was pissed. After its release, there was so much outrage from the citizens who watched the film, that the investigations were reopened. The demand for legislative reform reached all the way to the National Assembly, where a revised bill, dubbed the Dogani Bill, was passed in late October 2011 to abolish the limitations for sex crimes against minors and the disabled. I haven't seen it yet and will need to be emotionally ready, but I do want to see a film that sparked such a big change in Korea! You can watch it here on Dramanice. Is anyone else interested or has seen it before?

Katherine Langford
Katherine Langford (born 29 April 1996) is an Australian actress. She is known for starring as Hannah Baker in the 2017 Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (2017), based on the novel of the same name, for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination. In 2018, she appeared as Leah Burke in the romantic comedy-drama film Love, Simon (2018). Early life Langford was born in Perth and raised in Perth, Western Australia. She is the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Langford, a pediatrician, and Stephen Langford, a flying doctor and director of medical services at the Royal Flying Doctor Service Western Operations. She began voice lessons in 2005, and received classical, jazz, and contemporary vocal training. She was offered a place at Perth Modern School for her senior high years, where she studied music and drama, and was sports captain and a nationally ranked swimmer. Katherine Langford – “Le Defile L’Oreal Paris 2021” : Runway – Paris Fashion Week Initially during her time at high school, Langford was interested in medicine and politics, in addition to musical theatre. However, in 2012, when Langford was 16, she attended Lady Gaga’s concert, the Born This Way Ball, which inspired her to learn how to play the piano. She shared video of herself singing three original songs she wrote: “I’ve Got a Crush on Zoe Bosch,” “Young and Stupid,” and “3 Words.” “Young and Stupid” is an anti-suicide song she wrote in 2013 after three Perth teens took their lives. For her final year at Perth Modern, Langford stopped swimming and switched her focus to music and performance. She was successful in a number of musical eisteddfods and drama competitions. Langford appeared in the school’s production of Hotel Sorrento in 2013 and graduated that same year. After graduating high school, Langford was determined to become an actor. However, she was rejected from every acting school she applied to, on the grounds she was too young and did not have enough life experience. This led her to begin enrolling in acting classes and workshops in Perth, juggling three part-time jobs, and later finding herself an agent. From 2014 to 2015, Langford studied at the Principal Academy of Dance & Theatre Arts, majoring in Music Theatre, and appeared in a production of Godspell. She was then one of five selected to participate in the National Institute of Dramatic Arts Advanced Actors Residency in 2015. In the same year, she trained at Nicholson’s Academy of Screen Acting and portrayed the role of Juan Perón’s mistress in the 2015 production of Evita. Langford was offered a position in the Bachelor of Arts program in Acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and intended to begin studies in 2016. However, she never enrolled and instead pursued professional roles. Career Langford appeared as the lead character in a small independent short film, Daughter (2016) which debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. At the end of 2016, after declining the offer from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Langford auditioned and was asked to test for Riverdale, and Will, a television series centered on the young life of William Shakespeare. She did not get either role, which were instead given to Lili Reinhart, and Olivia DeJonge. Langford auditioned for the role in the mystery teen drama TV series 13 Reasons Why over Skype and had only 10 days to get an O-1 visa as she had not worked in the United States before. She has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the American high school student Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why. Langford researched the role, speaking with a representative of the sexual assault awareness campaign “It’s On Us” and a psychiatrist who specializes in adolescence. In December 2016, she signed with the William Morris Endeavor agency. In 2018 Langford appeared in her first feature film, Love, Simon, an adaptation of the coming-of-age novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, by Becky Albertalli. Katherine Langford – ‘Knives Out’ European Premiere In 2019, Langford co-starred in Knives Out, a murder mystery film. The ensemble cast received critical acclaim, and she was part of various awards and nominations for the role, which included a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Cast. In 2020, she starred in the film Spontaneous, a well-reviewed, dark comedy for which she received a Critics’ Choice Super Awards nomination for Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie. On 12 September 2018, it was announced that Langford had been cast in the web television series Cursed. Set in an re-imagined Arthurian world, Langford portrays Nimue, a teenage girl destined to become the Lady of the Lake. It premiered on Netflix in July 2020.
