Ronaldo and the Syrian Refugee Boy
Remember that time when a Hungarian journalist intentionally tripped a Syrian refugee carrying his son? Well, the story of Osama Alabed Almohse (the father in the picture) and his youngest son, Ziad, immediately became international news and word spread that Almohse was a soccer coach in Syria. He was then offered a teaching job at CENAFE which is a Spanish school that trains coaches. And it didn't stop there. Last Thursday, Real Madrid president, Florentine Perez, invited Almohse, and his two sons, Mohammad and Ziad, to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the home and heart of Real Madrid. But something even greater happened over the weekend during a match between Real Madrid and Granada. Ziad got to walk onto the field of Santiago Bernabeu with his hero and the sport's most recognizable star, Cristiano Ronaldo. Also, Ronaldo and his teammates wore T-shirts that showed their support for all the refugees that have fled Syria. And Real Madrid said the club plans on donating 1 million euros toward the humanitarian cause and help out the Syrian refugees. The club plans on helping Almohse attain refugee status in Spain, but he'll have to first learn how to speak Spanish. Hopefully they can start a new life in Spain and never have to go through the terrible experience they had a few weeks ago. United escape with a win
Manchester United got the weekend of EPL football underway with a tight win over Watford on early Saturday morning. Despite being on the road, this was a match that United really needed to win, and they came out firing from the first minute. Manager Louis van Gaal went with an attacking formation as youngster Jesse Lingard got another start for the Red Devils against lowly Watford. Major signing Memphis Depay got the scoring started in the 11th minute and is hoping to answer some of the people who think he was a waste of money after a difficult start to live in Manchester but this was a big performance for the Dutch winger. Troy Deeney scored a late penalty for Watford to equalize - he tied it up in the 87th minute - before conceding an own goal in added time that gave United the win. It was a gusty performance from Watford, who seem to put in a decent showing each week but are struggling to come up with results. It's always difficult for new teams in the EPL and Watford are feeling the effects of the increased quality in a major way. It wasn't all good for United, though, as midfielder Ander Herrera limped off the pitch in the first half with an injury. Definitely one of the more underrated players in the league, Herrera was just recovering from a different injury and had made his way back into the first team for the first time in a few weeks today so he'll be upset to have another spell on the sidelines. All in all, a good win for United, as they move to first in the table over their rivals City. City have a game in hand but United can only be thrilled with their performance and especially the result. They'll be hoping City drop points today against Liverpool to maintain the top spot.
