I'm learning to play the guitar. Help?
For most of my life, music has been the thing that I am most passionate about. For most of my life, I have convinced myself that I am incapable of actually making any music of my own. But for a brief (and ill-fated) foray into the universe of the piano in my early teens, I've never been able to do much of anything with instruments. Which is odd, because I know that I have a really good ear for music - at least, that's what I pride myself on. And when I talk to people about music, it eventually comes up that I don't know how to play a damned thing, and I get embarrassed. So I'm putting an end to that. This is a public declaration: I am learning to play the guitar. There. I said it. Now, I have no choice. People are watching. Right? I can't really say why it's taken me so long to realize this, but the reality is that while I say I have no musical ability, I haven't actually ever tried. Yes, I played the piano for a few years. But I hated it, because that's not the kind of music that I like. The guitar is. I dug out my mom's old guitar - the one she claims to have bought some time in the mid-'70s - and started familiarizing myself with it. I'm taking it slow - I literally don't have the first idea of what to do. I found an online class (thank you internet) that I'm hoping will do a good job at teaching me. I started to learn the language and posture last night, just sitting on the floor with the guitar in my lap. When I first picked it up, I felt so uncomfortable, so awkward. I couldn't get my arms right. But after only half an hour, it started to feel more natural. Sure, my back hurt a little from being in a strange, unfamiliar position, but the guitar started to feel OK in my hands. And I learned how to hold a pick. And what a fret is. It was an encouraging, if slow, start. I'm committed to this. It's going to be hard, and I may not be ready to play a single note for a week. But I know that things like this take time, and I'm prepared to dedicate some real hours to figuring it out. I don't have an end goal, outside of just being able to competently make some sounds with a guitar. That's all I want - and if I can get there, I'll be one happy man. Suggestions? Does anyone have a good website with tricks and tips? Or any pointers of your own? Anything and everything helps! I'll keep you guys posted!
10 Rock and Roll Jams To Replace Your Boring Christmas Playlist
Are you sick of the ho-hum standards usually played during the Holiday season? Have no fear! Your amazing new Christmas playlist is here! Tune in rock out and get rid of those winter blues, because these highly original christmas songs are going to knock your socks off. Get modern, get cool, and get all ready for Christmas! 1. Yule Shoot Your Eye Out / Fall Out Boy This song is everything. And if you've never heard it before, you're in for a treat. Vengeful, cutting and completely clever it's the kind of Christmas song you can stomach over and over without throwing up. Get your Santa hats out, because you've got a new Christmas jam. 2. Merry Christmas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight) / The Ramones This punk rock classic is perfect for that moment when you're forced to decorate the tree with family members that don't necessarily get along. You know...all of them. So for your next Christmas gathering...just play them this, "Come on guys. It's Christmas time, don't fight. The Ramones said so!" Right? That's all it'll take. 3. Don't Shoot Me Santa / The Killers I wrote an entire list of all the great Killers Christmas songs. They're seriously all remarkable. I had to include my personal favorite, "Don't Shoot Me Santa" the catchiest, funniest most edgy Christmas song around. Play this video for your friends and watch them fall in love. Seriously. 4. I Wish It Was Christmas Today / Julian Casablancas The lead singer of The Strokes gives you this Dean-Martin-esque Christmas neo-classic. It's smooth and classic, but still has that classic Casablancas sneer. It's magic. So play this for your parents at their boring Christmas party, and just bop along. Because it's kind of like you're listening to The Strokes without offending old people right? 5. All I Want For Christmas Is You / My Chemical Romance This is my favorite version of this song. Your friends are probably all like..."What about Mariah Carey! She's the Christmas queen!" No. Gerard Way is the Christmas queen damn it. Trust me. This is the best version of this song you will hear. 6. All I Want For Christmas / The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Karen O's distinct vocals coupled with this rockabilly vibe make "All I Want For Christmas" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is the perfect song to listen to while you're contemplating your existence during the holidays. Rock music just does that. 7. Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass / All Time Low Much like Fall Out Boy's Christmas tune, All Time Low bring the spiteful part of the season to light. For some, the Holidays aren't a beautiful, golden time filled with presents and chestnuts and all that. For some, they're cold, lonely and a reminder of all the things you continuously screw up. This one's for you. Play it loud, even if you're a Grinch. 8. White Christmas / Panic! At The Disco Let Brendon Urie's velvety smooth vocals lull you into Christmas bliss with this lovely cover of a classic. Probably the most traditional on the list, its something you can jam with your grandma to, and have a little laugh to yourself because it's Brendon Urie not Bing Crosby. 9. The Flaming Lips / Christmas at the Zoo I had the distinct pleasure of seeing The Flaming Lips this summer at the Nelsonville Music Festival in Ohio. It was one of the strangest experiences of my life. The scene was madness: big rock hooks with neon lights, swinging strings of lights, giant balloons, various strains of marijuana smoke flying through the air and the crazy presence of lead singer Wayne Coyne. This Christmas song is nutty, just like the band. It's also the perfect thing to play during one of your young, hip Christmas gatherings...if you have one. 10. Won't Be Home For Christmas / Blink 182 Rock and roll can be bitter business, but the truth is, that some people just can't get home for Christmas and others just don't want to. Whatever your reason for being away from home, you're not alone. You've got Blink 182 to lull you into holiday submission. Which Christmas song was your favorite!? If you like this playlist, or want to make one of your own, be sure to hang around the Alternative Rock community here on Vingle! And Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
7 Iconic Prince Songs To Remember His Legacy
Today we've lost a legend. At age 57, iconic pop star Prince has died. He was the voice behind "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" singing pop hits to define the generation. Prince was a man of secrecy, pure exclusivity, and always stayed at a firm distance from his fans letting the music only speak for itself. Like the passings of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, Prince will go down in history as another pop legend who died too young. Prince passed away at 10:07 a.m. CT in his Paisley Park residence this morning. He was found unconscious in an elevator by a man whose name has yet to be released. The man called 911 at 9:43 a.m. and when paramedics arrived, they were unable to revive the legend after attempting CPR. Though cause of death originally claimed to be from a severe flu, new information is slowly pointing to a drug overdose. There are no signs of fowl play. "The person is dead here. ... And the people are just distraught," the man told the police dispatcher. Prince's autopsy is set for Friday. Below I have provided a list of 7 of Prince's greatest hits and the iconic lyrics from each: 1. Purple Rain I never meant to cause you any sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I only wanted one time to see you laughing I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain. 2. Let's Go Crazy Instead of asking him how much of your time is left Ask him how much of your mind, baby 'Cause in this life Things are much harder than in the after world In this life You're on your own. 3. When Doves Cry This is what it sounds like When doves cry. 4. Kiss You don't have to be rich To be my girl You don't have to be cool To rule my world Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with I just want your extra time and your Kiss. 5. Raspberry Beret She wore a Raspberry beret The kind you find in a second hand store Raspberry beret And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more Raspberry beret I think I love her. 6. Little Red Corvette Little red Corvette Baby you're much too fast. 7. 1999 I was dreamin' when I wrote this So sue me if I go 2 fast But life is just a party, and parties weren't meant 2 last War is all around us, my mind says prepare 2 fight So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen 2 my body tonight Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over, Oops out of time So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
BTS Fire and WTF Is Tropical House?
Alright y'all, we're going to talk about a topic that affects each and every one of us: TROPICAL HOUSE. It's a subgenre of house music that is influenced by instruments such as steel drums usually used in Jamaican, Cuban, etc music. It's been getting more and more popularity these days but I was still surprised to hear it in at BTS song! It is most noticeable in Rap Mon's part at 2:15. That awesome sound in the back? That's classic Tropical House music! Here are some more examples if you dig that sound: Jeremih - Don't Tell 'Em Thanks to @Lizzeh for reminding me about this awesome example!!!! Justin Bieber - Sorry & What Do You Mean Beibs made his comeback completely backed by this music. It sounds fresh, fun, and you CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. Kygo - Stay Often referenced as the king of the rebirth of TropHouse, Kygo is your go-to DJ if you want nothing but Tropical House in your ears. Skrillex and Diplo - Where Are Ü Now This was the song that really brought the sound to mainstream recently. Those "dolphin sounds" or however you choose to describe it...yup, TropHouse. Fifth Harmony - Worth It & Work It's leaking into the girl group pop scene too with Fifth Harmony using an almost 8-bit take on Trop-Pop. Still groovy. Jamie XX - Loud Places And then we have Jamie XX that combines his smooth sleepy sounds from the XX with the catchy pop of Tropical House. Needless to say, it was love at first listen. Even though it has existed for a long time (and the influences that inspired existed looooooooooong before) I'm glad to hear more of it now in mainstream music! Enjoy!

10 Things You Might Not Know About Green Day
I'm one of those people that just retains random facts about rock bands. I've been contributing to a few Bay Area publications and it got me thinking about my favorite band of all time, Green Day. It's kind of funny. I was born in Los Angeles and have lived all over the country. The greatest part of my time till this point was spent in the Midwest, so it was funny that I ended up in the home of my heroes. Here are 10 things you might not know about Green Day, most of them have to do withthings they did in the Bay Area, so natives of Nor Cal, here we go~! 1. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt went to Pinhole Valley High School Contra Costa County is known for its refinery towns, but Pinhole Valley is known for their notable alumni Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day. It's pretty badass that this tiny high school in Northern California is like...world famous because of its alumni. I mean, they're some of the biggest rock stars in the world. There's even video of the guys playing on the school's quad, a lot like my band used to do. Everybody has to start somewhere. 2. Tre Cool grew up in some damn mountain range, but was originally born in Germany. Those gorgeous mountains you can’t help but stare at on your way north were once home to Green Day drummer Tre Cool who ended up spending all of his time drumming outdoors, because there wasn’t much to do up in that altitude. No internet yet. You could develop a lot of skills back in the day, before entertainment was always at your fingertips and people became perpetually bored. 3. Green Day actually had a different drummer before Tre Cool joined. His name was Al Sobrante. Of course, any Bay Area native would know that his name is a direct reference to El Sobrante, California another small town in the Contra Costa County. It directly translates to “the leftovers” which is what ended up happening to Al when he left Green Day. Tough shit. 4. Green Day's first gig was at a BBQ joint called "Rod's Hickory Pit". 30 friends gathered to hear the first ever Green Day concert. Billie Joe’s mother Ollie got them the gig because she was working there as a waitress at the time. My band used to play at a place called Zeke's Tavern. We'd have our friends and family come out and hang. We'd get paid like...100 bucks for a full set. Split 5 ways. Again, starting somewhere. 5. Billie Joe and Mike started playing their instruments around age 11, Tre at 12. The first band Tre was part of played outside up in the mountains. They were called “The Lookouts”. Tre was by far the youngest member of the band. My first band The Walking Contradictions (of course, named after a Green Day song) started playing when I was 12. The parallels keep on coming. 6. Green Day played with Rancid, Operation Ivy, The Queers and more at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. I have yet to make my pilgrimage to this punk mecca, but I will. One of my dreams as a little kid was to play here...maybe at 23 I will. 7. Green Day released two full length albums on Lookout! Records before Dookie was even thought of. They're called "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" and "Kerplunk!". Some tracks that appear on Dookie were demoed during these recordings. See if you can pick them out. 8. The band was actually banned from Gilman for a while. The song “86” off of Green Day’s sophomore release, "Insomniac "was a direct retaliation against people who barred them from returning to Gilman because they were looked at as "sellouts" for signing to Warner Brothers in 1994. 9. Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe Armstrong have recently created a coffee company called “Oakland Coffee.” It's an environmentally conscious, entirely compostable product that boasts awesome benefits for the Bay Area economy. Green Day is all about keeping it local. Billie Joe even donates money to the East Bay food banks, and lends himself to charity work as much as possible. 10. All of the members still live in the Bay Area. Maybe I'll run into one of them someday. Pretty cool that after all this time and sucess they know exactly where they came from. What bands do you want to know more about!? Tag me in a comment below and I'll see what my journalistic skills can dig up for you. In the mean time make sure to follow my music collection, where you can read about bands, listen to playlists and interact with more peeps who love the same kind of stuff you do.
OLD SONGS WILL CATCH YOUR EARS
I love music. Yes, I do. That's all. My friends say songs that you hear define your age; for me it is more to era. My friends are about 10-15 years older than me, but I'm more to the songs that they hear in 80's or 90's than to the songs that my friends who are 10 years younger than me (read Katty Perry, Jessie J, Nicky Minaj, etc). Even, that 70's songs or less still catch my heart. My friends who are younger than me laugh at me when I play these songs or even know what the lyrics are and how to sing it. They will put me in the same taste with their parents'. It is fine and I don't mind. Why do I have to? These songs are everlasting. I will remember how my dad played the songs everytime we were in the car in our way to some place and we sang, my dad,my mom,and I. Everytime we were together he always played songs. Yes, he loved music as well. I have these 10 songs that are always in my mind. Of course I still have hundreds, but I just give us 10 songs that may take you back to a moment that probably the moment when you dated your wife or husband. A moment when you broke up with your lover, or maybe a moment like mine when you were just this 4,5,or 6 year little kid who loved the songs because your parents loved them. Here they are: 1. I'll remember you by Atlantic Starr 2. I don't have the heart to hurt you by James Ingram 3. Hard to say I'm sorry by Chicago 4. Just the way you are by Billy Joel 5. If you leave me now by Chicago 6. Till I find you again by Richard Marx 7. After all by Al Jarreau 8. After the love has gone by Earth, Wind, and Fire 9. Why goodbye by Peabo Bryson 10. Stuck on you by Lionel Richie Let's listen to them and tell me what do you feel?
