My top 5 list of k-dramas in the music, romance genre. ENJOY!
5. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band
PLOT: Byung Hee is the crazy, free-spirited leader and vocalist of the popular underground rock group, Eye Candy. Joining him is mood-maker Ji Hyuk, chic Hyun Soo, playboy Ha Jin, silent Do Il and baby-faced Kyung Jong. These boys rule their school until a redevelopment plan forces the delinquent-ridden school to close down. They're all assigned a transfer to Jung Sang High, but debate whether it's even worth returning to high school at all. However, due to an outside confrontation with Jung Sang's current ruling band, Strawberry Fields, Eye Candy decides to attend Jung Sang out of spite and rule the school once again. WHY? I wasn't the biggest fan of the drama mostly because of the female lead. I just didn't like her and her facial expressions seemed forced. But I loved all the male leads. What I really like about this drama was the music, it was really touching to listen to and some were really fun to listen to. Lots of FLOWER BOYS! <3
4. Monstar (Source: Wiki)
PLOT: Seol-chan (Yong Jun-hyung), a member of Korea's most popular K-pop boy band Men in Black, is provoked into pushing one of his crazy fans, and when that goes viral, his reputation plummets. As damage control, his agency tells him to quietly attend school for a while. Meanwhile, Se-yi (Ha Yeon-soo), a new transfer student from New Zealand, draws attention in the school for both her talent and oddness. Misunderstandings occur between Seol-chan, Se-yi, and their other classmates. But in the midst of all the chaos, these students find a common interest which connects them to each other: music. Every character has his or her own untold stories, which have had significant impact in their lives. But as they gather together to sing and play the music they love, they learn to soothe the pain inside them, and to open each of their souls. WHY? I actually just finished this one very recently about 2 weeks ago and I really liked it but the ending was meh. I still had questions. I like the cast a lot, I'm not as big a Kang Ha-neul fan as most but I liked him in this. He wasn't my favorite. I actually really liked Nana, the female and male lead too. The storyline was good but I think the drama could have gone for another 2 episodes to at least clear up what happened. The music was really pleasant to listen to.
3. Dream High 1 & 2 (Source: MyDramaList)
PLOT (Dream High): Dream High tells the story of six students at Kirin Art High School who work to achieve their dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry. Go Hye Mi (Bae Suzy) is a student who had majored in classical music but has to give up her dream by entering Kirin Art High School to pay off her father's debt. However, she needs to get two other students to also come to the school in order for her to enroll in the school conditionally. These two students are Song Sam Dong (Kim Soo Hyun), who lives in the countryside, and Jin Guk (Ok TaecYeon), whom she accidentally meets while trying to escape from a loan shark. Yoon Baek Hee, formerly Hyemi's sidekick, becomes her rival in school because Hye Mi betrays her during an audition to enter the school. PLOT (Dream High 2): Kirin High School of Art has been taken over by Oz Entertainment because of financial bankruptcy. Oz Entertainment then transfers over its own idol stars to Kirin High to avoid a law requiring under age entertainers to study for a set time. Competition then brews between troubled students at Kirin High School of Art and then newly transferred idols from Oz Entertainment. Shin Hae-Sung (Kang So-ra) enters Kirin High School of Art with a high written exam score, but poor performance scores. She then meets fellow students Jin Yoo-Jin (Jung Jin-woon)and JB (Im Jae-bum), who makes her realize how fun music can be. Jin Yoo-Jin acted when he was a young child. Now, he is a troubled student dreaming of becoming a rock star. He attempts to cure his pain caused by his parent's divorce through music. WHY? I had to put these two together although they are both completely different they are still a series. I loved the first season but hated Suzy in it. I'm not a big Suzy fan sorry to upset everyone but I just don't. I was more interested in IU and Wooyoung's relationship in "Dream High" than in the female leads relationship. I did like the 1st season more but in my heart there were some things I loved about the 2nd season as well. A lot of people hate on "Dream High 2" but I for one liked it. It might be because I actually really liked Kang So-ra being the female lead, this was the first drama I saw any of the characters in. It's the drama that made me fall in love with my kpop UB Jae-bum. Also Jin-woon's character is so adorable. I liked that the 2nd season did show them dancing. I think the 2nd season focused more on dancing than the songs. But I also found a lot of great songs thanks to Dream High 2. I do think Dream High had a lot of better concepts and music in it. Both seasons leave some things unclear at the end.
2. You're Beautiful (Source: DramaWiki)
PLOT: The management company of the popular idol group A.N.JELL decided to add a new member to the group. Go Mi Nam (Park Shin Hye), the new member, has to go to the U.S. due to an urgent emergency having to have an eye job. His twin sister, Go Mi Nyu (Park Shin Hye), is a soon to be nun that is in training ends up having to take her brother's place and pretend to be a boy until Mi Nam comes back from the U.S. During the time period she pretends to be Mi Nam, she unexpectedly begins to fall in love with the leader of A.N.JELL, Hwang Tae Kyung. Hwang Tae Kyung (Jang Geun Suk), is the leader of the popular idol group, he's a cold hearted, straight forward, clean freak that has lived his life alone after being abandoned by his own mother until he got into A.N.JELL. When he found out about Mi Nyu being a girl, he agrees to help and keep her identity a secret from everyone else. Will Go Mi Nyu be able to keep her identity hidden from everyone else until her twin brother comes back? WHY? This is a classic drama. My favorite character was of course Jeremy and I know many others loved him too because he's a likable and fun character. The music is alright, to be honest I don't really listen to any of the songs from this drama. But I loved the story of the drama more than the music because I'm a big gender-bender fan. Plus I love both Geun-suk and Shin-hye. This had it's cute and funny moments as well. I really loved this drama and the cast was great!
1. Heartstrings (Source: AsianWiki)
PLOT: Set at an art university, the youth romance drama "Festival" depicts the sweat and tears of students who run towards their dreams of love and friendship. Kyu-Won (Park Shin-Hye) is a bright girl and a highly skilled gayageum player. She is in the Korean traditional music department. Kyu-Won also comes from a family who has one of the three best pansori singers in the world. Shin (Jung Yong-Hwa) is a cold and refined young man, while being a highly skilled guitarist. He is in the applied music department. They come from different family backgrounds and have an argument, but then start to like other. WHY? Time for the big #1! I LOVE Heartstrings!!! It's one of the dramas that I do want t rewatch. This drama made me a huge fan of both Jung Yong-hwa and Park Shin-hye. They look so good together but for some reason I only ship them when they are the male and female lead because I couldn't ship it in You're Beautiful. I also fell for the adorable Kang Min-hyuk because of this drama. He was just so cute and funny! Plus I've always loved the band concept, that's why I love CNBLUE. The music was really good in this drama, by far my favorite music drama. I still listen to the songs from it and you can feel the emotions when they sing the song. For example when Shin-hye sang "I Will Forget You", I was touched and couldn't help but tear up. I love Yong-hwa's voice! I want him in more dramas, he looks good with black hair.
