Narrator POV
Hoseok knew exactly what Taehyung was planning the moment he had suggested taking turns on taking Jiyoung out for dates. And although he felt embarrassed, he couldn’t help but feel a little grateful. When Taehyung had nominated Hoseok, Jin had gotten annoyed saying that he’d never get a chance to spoil his new little sister. This was met by the other guys telling him that he’d been hogging Jiyoung since she came to the house. But just to make Jin feel better, Hoseok was going to nominate Jin next. Jimin stayed out of the discussion because he was also aware of what Taehyung had been planning. It annoyed him, but Jimin was willing to wait his turn.
That week, Hoseok spent all of his free time brainstorming ideas for his ‘date’ with Jiyoung. It was a mess. He hadn’t been on a date in years. Also, though he was familiar with many of Jiyoung’s likes and dislikes, he wasn’t sure what she would want to do on a date. And he didn’t want to leave it up to her, he wanted to take charge. Friday, Hoseok reluctantly settled on his plans.
When Saturday came, Hoseok was a nervous wreck. He knew it wasn’t a real date, but it felt like it to him. He had no idea that Jiyoung was feeling almost exactly the same. More so than her date with Taehyung, Jiyoung was anxious for her date with Hoseok. Just thinking about it made her heart race. So far, Taehyung’s advice she had tricked out of him (or so she thought), hadn’t helped her reach a decision yet. She thought that maybe these ‘dates’ would help her. Nervously, Jiyoung pulled out the makeup bag she had barely touched since JiEun had bought it for her. Other than her date with Taehyung, she didn’t really use it. She didn’t want to get dolled up, but she wanted to look nice for her dates. {Especially Hoseok and Jimin.} Then she felt guilty for thinking of them at the same time.
After Jiyoung finished, she went to her walk-in closet. She had set aside an outfit the previous night but now she was questioning if it was good enough or not. Just before she went into the closet, her door burst open causing Jiyoung to jump.
JiEun laughed as she closed the door behind her. “Sorry, but I just knew you’d be worried about your clothes for today.”
“I’m not worried, I’m gonna get changed right now.”
“In your closet?” JiEun teased.
“Uh, no. I was just grabbing the clothes.”
“You’re a bad liar. I saw them hanging up on the clothes rack over there last night, remember?” Jiyoung mentally slapped herself. JiEun placed her hands on Jiyoung’s shoulders. “Just relax. Whatever you wear, oppa’s gonna think you’re beautiful.”
“Shush, you. Why would I care anyway?” Jiyoung poorly tried to deflect. JiEun just gave her a ‘You’re not fooling anyone’ look.
“Just hurry up or you’ll be late.” Jiyoung glanced at her bedside alarm clock before throwing the closet door shut and telling JiEun to get out so she could change. JiEun laughed her way out of the room.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Hoseok’s knock. Jiyoung scrambled to throw everything into her purse.
“Is it okay to come in?” she heard Hoseok ask.
“Yeah. Sorry, I was just getting everything together.” Hoseok opened the door with a shy smile on his face. When he saw her, his heart skipped a beat before it started racing. Jiyoung was wearing a below-the-knee-length pink pleated skirt and white, button-up blouse with light pink lace adorning the sleeves and bottom. Her makeup, while not necessary to make her look beautiful, was light and highlighted her beautiful eyes and lips. She ran up to Hoseok, a light pink blush dusting her cheeks. She was too nervous to look him in the eye. Hoseok lowered his stance to meet her eyes.
“Ready for our date?” Hoseok barely managed to say without stuttering. Jiyoung didn’t trust herself to speak so she simply nodded and made a noise of affirmation. Hoseok gingerly held her hand and guided her from her room all the way to his car. The whole time, both of their hearts were pounding in their chests. Hoseok opened the car door for her and she reluctantly let go of his hand to slide in.
After a couple minutes of driving, Jiyoung asked, “So what is this ‘brunch’ place you’re taking me to?”
“Well, I thought it might be nice to try an American brunch. I know you’re very familiar with Korean cuisine, of course, so I thought it might be nice to have a little American for brunch and maybe Italian for dinner to help expand your palate. How does that sound?”
“Sounds delicious!” she exclaimed.
“I don’t know who likes food more, you or Jin-hyung,” Hoseok laughed.
“Mmmmm...definitely me,” she proclaimed dramatically. Hoseok glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. How was it possible for her to be so beautiful...
Until they arrived at the restaurant, Jiyoung asked Hoseok about the different kinds of things he did at the hospital. Hoseok explained a lot and told her the other guys worked at least as much as him also. Jiyoung was fascinated by the amount of work the guys did at their young age.
Hoseok parked the car and the two went in. Jiyoung let Hoseok order for her since she was unfamiliar with the foods. He ordered French toast, hash browns, sausages, bacon, and scrambled eggs for both of them. Hoseok tried to keep from staring straight at Jiyoung while they ate, but it was so hard when all he wanted to sit there and look at her. {I’m definitely not a creep, though. She’s just too beautiful to not look at. The sounds she’s making are just too adorable. It’s driving me crazy.} Jiyoung was very happy with the brunch and couldn’t help the small sounds of enjoyment that escaped while she ate. She looked up at Hoseok with a shy smile and Hoseok beamed his wide smile back. Jiyoung loved his smile.
After brunch, Hoseok took them to their next destination, the aquarium. Jiyoung had mentioned before that she had never been but that it sounded nice. Hoseok already had tickets ready when they went to the front entrance.
“Ready?” Hoseok asked unnecessarily. The look on Jiyoung face showed her excitement. Without realizing, the second they walked in, Jiyoung wrapped her arm around Hoseok’s and pulled him to the first exhibit. They walked around for several hours. Every time they reached a new exhibit, Jiyoung would marvel at it, her mouth gaping open. Hoseok used this time to stare at Jiyoung unabashedly. Whenever they were at an exhibit, Jiyoung didn’t seem to notice anything around her. Although Hoseok was a little saddened at first, he quickly stopped caring when she would call out his name and tell him to look at something. Everything was new and beautiful to her. And Hoseok loved that about her.
Even though she had been through so much for the last 11 years, Jiyoung seemed to be so strong. Although she was fearful at first, Jiyoung quickly became fascinated by the world. And she never showed it more than at the aquarium. Though she loved all the exhibits, Hoseok took note of the ones she seemed to be most fascinated with. The first were the dolphins. Watching above and below the water, Jiyoung would point them out every time she saw one. Whenever they did a trick, she would pull lightly on Hoseok’s shirt sleeve and ask if he saw it. Then she would look at him to confirm. He loved the beautiful look on her face, as if she was sunshine itself.
At the penguin exhibit, Jiyoung squealed gleefully the second she saw them. “Hoseok! Aren’t they the cutest things ever?!” {No. Not even close in comparison to you,} he thought before nodding his head in agreement. Hoseok didn’t think he had smiled more on any other day in his life. “Aw! I just wanna cuddle that little one! Take it home and let it sleep in my bed. Oh it’s so cute!” If it were possible, Hoseok would buy her all the penguins on Earth just to see that look on her face every day.
The other exhibit that Jiyoung seemed to love was the jellyfish exhibit. She didn’t smile, laugh, and giggle like she did with the others. Instead, she stared at them with an awestruck look, just watching as they moved up and down the tanks. She would move her hands with them as if she were following their trail. She was mesmerized by their movements and their colors. Hoseok was fairly certain that they spent more time in that exhibit than in any of the others. They were there so late that he actually had to maneuver her away from them because the aquarium was about to close. They talked about everything at the aquarium while Hoseok drove them to dinner. He loved the bright smile on her face as she recounted her favorite parts, asking if he had seen them even though he had been standing right next to her.
When they were seated at the Italian restaurant, Jiyoung asked Hoseok to pick the food for her since she was unfamiliar with this as well. But Hoseok refused. Instead, he told her what was in the food and was able to recommend certain ones and steer her away from others he was sure she would like or not like. Seafood was apparently her favorite based off of her eating habits at home and the fact that she ordered the seafood Alfredo. While eating, Hoseok asked Jiyoung what she wanted to do after she passed her GED test. There was no doubt in his mind that she would pass.
“Um... I don’t know. I thought about it a little before but...I have no idea. I mean, I know I want to go to college, but I don’t know what I want to study.”
“Is there a subject that interests you? Or a book you’ve read that interests you?” Jiyoung thought about it, but nothing really came to mind. Then an idea hit her.
“I think I might want to do social work.”
“Well, thinking about it, the only reason why my adoptive family’s behavior was never discovered was because it wasn’t investigated properly. And that’s not really the fault of the social workers. They’re so understaffed and overworked. The one in charge of me told me that she wished she could see me more often, but she had so many kids to take care of. I felt sorry for her. I know one person doesn’t help much, but a little bit at a time may help.” Hoseok didn’t realize how he was looking at Jiyoung, but it made her blush. “W-what? Why’re you looking at me like that?”
“Sorry. I’re a really good person. I think you could do a lot more good than you realize.” Jiyoung looked away, blushing brighter at his words. Hoseok chuckled and went back to his food.
“So, where are you taking me for this late night surprise?” Jiyoung asked as Hoseok drove the car out of the city.
“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, now would it?” Hoseok glanced at her. Jiyoung pretended to pout. “Your amazing pouting powers have no hold over me.” Jiyoung broke the pout to laugh. There was a comfortable silence between them as Hoseok continued to drive. The radio volume was low, but enough that Jiyoung found herself swaying to the music. Hoseok admired her out of the corner of his eye. Finally, they reached their destination. Hoseok parked the car in the deserted parking lot for a quiet park. He grabbed a large blanket out of the back and told Jiyoung to follow him. They stopped right in the middle of the park. Hoseok laid the blanket out.
“What’s this?” Jiyoung asked curiously.
Hoseok laid down and patted the space next to him. “Lie down and you’ll find out.” Jiyoung was glad that the darkness hid her blush. Nervously, she laid down. And that’s when she saw the amazing sight. It had been so long since she had laid down and just stargazed.
“It’s...beautiful...” Jiyoung trailed off.
“Isn’t it?” {Aren’t you?} “I remember you saying that you used to do this when you lived with your grandparents.” Jiyoung turned her beautiful smile to him, tears building up in her eyes. “Oh—I didn’t mean to—“
“Thank you, Hoseok. I love it.” She looked back to the stars. Although the stars were in fact beautiful, Hoseok couldn’t help but stare at his most beautiful star.
Was it cute enough? I think this date perfectly describes the relationship, and possible future relationship, between the two. Sweet, full of wonder, talking about anything they want...
I wonder how it'll compare to Jimin's date. But that'll have to wait. Tomorrow is Jungkook's day. Then Jimin's.
Did this one help you to decide who you want to win or are you going to wait for Jimin's date? ;)
I hope you enjoyed today's chapter and I hope you enjoy tomorrow's.
Thank you @Mavis2478 for the story.
