Editor Comment 길거리에서 점차 잊혀져 가는 모든 것을 흑백 필름으로 담는 스트리트 포토그래퍼, 임수민. 끊임없이 자신에 대해 고민하고, 그 답지 못했을 때는 침전되다가도 다시금 마음을 다잡는 모습에서 은근한 에너지와 솔직한 면모가 풍긴다.그녀가 경험한 5개월간의 태평양 항해는 끔찍하게도 고통스러운 시간이었다고 전했는데, 이상하게도 상상조차 소름 끼치는 경험 후에 임수민은 그 누구보다도 좋은 선장이 되겠다고 결심했다. 배 위에서는 선장의 말이 곧 법이기에 진정 바다 위에서 자유롭고 싶다면 직접 선장이 되는 길밖에 없다고 판단했기 때문. 그렇게 임수민은 스트리트 포토그래퍼에 이어 캡틴 쑤(SOO)로 탈바꿈했다. 오로지 그녀의 배 ‘NEW SALT’ 위에서만큼은. 숙련된 뱃사람, 즉 베테랑 세일러를 일컫는 ‘old salt’의 반의어로 지어진 요트 이름은 상어를 손으로 때려잡은 이야기만 하며 권위를 내세우는 선장이 아닌, 새로운 모험을 발판 삼아 시작하는 타인에게 따뜻한 공간이 되어주겠다는 의미를 내포한다. “같은 바다를 항해했지만, 우리는 모두 다른 파도를 봤다” 하루에도 몇 롤씩 사진을 찍은 후, 이태원 우사단길에 있는 소박한 작업실 부엌에서 필름을 현상하는 생활이 유일한 낙이었던 그녀가 일종의 소셜 다이어트를 위해 모험을 계획했다. 일본에서 요트를 매입해 직접 캡틴이 되겠다고 나서기까지. 서로와의 직접적인 관계가 전무한 분야에서 종사하는 4인이 모여 각자만의 방법으로 가치관을 찾아갈 수 있도록 용기를 북돋는 프로젝트가 지난 한 달간 펼쳐졌다. 타이틀은 ‘I AM A NEW SALT’. 내구성은 물론 스타일까지 고루 겸비한 나이키 스포츠 웨어와 함께했다. 크루 각자만의 불타오르는 열정을 품고 무모하다면 무모할 수 있는 제주도 항해기. 임수민은 더 이상 새로운 발명을 하기가 어려워진 오늘날, ‘발견’이란 의미를 다르게 정의하고자 했다. 캡틴 쑤와 크루는 배가 정박해 있는 여수에서 출발해 제주도 윤곽을 돌며 배의 항적으로 뉴솔트만의 제주도를 그렸다. 그녀에게 하나뿐인 연인이자 동료, 선배에 이르는 세일러 채(CHAE)와 의기투합해 진행된 프로젝트는 항해에 대한 전반적인 것을 담당한 그와 크루 케어 및 기획적인 면을 전담한 캡틴 쑤가 서로의 경계를 넘나들며 더 험하고 고독한 내면의 항로를 스스로 개척해나가기 위한 모험이다. 한 달간의 여정 중 1구간에서 동행한 뉴솔트 크루는 모델 겸 유튜버 마테와 DJ 클로젯이다. 캡틴 쑤 1인칭 시점으로 전하는 4인 4색 ‘뉴솔트’ 제주도 항해 일지를 아래에서 간접 체험해보자. NEW SALT ｜ 스트리트 포토그래퍼, 세일러 나는 ‘길이 있어도 없어도 갈 길을 가는 캡틴 쑤’다. ｜ 보트워커, 세일러 나는 ‘삶이라는 배의 키를 쥔 선장’이다. ｜ 모델, 유튜버 마테 나는 ‘<매트릭스>의 모피어스’다. ｜ DJ 클로젯 나는 ‘히트곡이 되고 싶은 인트로 트랙’이다. 배 작업부터 출항 직전까지 ｜5월 6일 아침 10시 우리는 여수에서 제주도 김녕 항으로, 그리고 그곳에서 도두 사수항으로 향할 예정이다. 만반의 준비를 하고 출발하는 날 아침까지도 나와 채는 출항 준비로 정신없었다. 새로운 크루들이 도착하기 이틀 전에 엔진이 고장 나는 바람에 여수 이순신 마리나에서 유명한 ‘신사장님’의 도움을 받아 배의 심장을 새로 이식하다 싶이 대공사를 치렀다. 혹여나 문제가 있을까봐 지금도 마지막 점검을 위해 이곳저곳 살펴보고 계신다. 항해를 하는 도중에 우리는 지도도 봐야 하고 해경과 연락도 닿아야 해서 캡틴들은 제외였지만, 크루들은 유심 카드를 제출하도록 했다. 여수와 제주도 사이에는 섬들도 많아서 LTE가 잘 터지기 때문에 이러한 극단적인 방법을 취하지 않는다면 ‘자신을 찾는 여정’에 집중할 수 없을 것이다! 이제는 더 이상 지체할 시간이 없다. 이쯤 되니 준비가 되지 않더라도 출발을 해야만 했다. 완비를 위해 욕심을 부리다간 아예 출항을 못하는 수가 있기에. 서로를 격려하며 이제는 정말로 배에서 밧줄만 푸르면 떠날 수 있도록 준비했다. 오자마자 노동을 하게 된 두 크루들과 함께 이제까지 질질 끌며 여기저기 짐을 날랐던 슬리퍼를 모두 수거해서 창고에 넣고, 우리 넷은 여수 땅을 떠났다. 여수 →김녕항 ｜5월 6일 오후 2시 바다다. 물론 뒤에 보이는 수많은 통발들을 피하느라 긴장을 놓칠 수 없었지만, 아직 육지와 너무도 가까워 소리치면 다 들릴 것 같았지만 그래도 드디어 출항이다. 크루들은 흔들리는 배에 설렜고, 프로젝트를 준비하느라 각자의 위치에서 고생했던 우리 두 캡틴은 감격스러웠다. 어딘가로 두둥실 떠나버리는 이 자유가 감사했다. 재영은 바다와 바람의 소리를 녹음하고 일기를 쓰고, 마테는 영상으로 새로운 것을 경험하는 본인을 기록했다. 자신의 방식으로 바다 속에서 즐거움을 찾는 크루들을 보며 우리도 전에는 보지 못했던 바다를 느꼈고, 그래서 행복했다.그렇게 바다를 한참 즐기고 낮잠도 자다보니 배가 고프기 시작했다. 그래서 나는 항해 도중 먹으면 눈물 나게 맛있는 양파, 참치, 마요네즈 주먹밥을 만들기 위해 부엌으로 내려갔지만 하필 그때 예보에도 없던 바람이 세게 불기 시작해 그때부터 멀미와의 싸움은 시작되었다. 바람이 한 방향에서 세게 불면 돛이 힘을 받아서 배가 기운 채 움직인다. 그래서 배 안에서 걸어 다니는 건 물론 가만히 앉아 있기조차 힘이 든다. 그렇게 나와 마테, 클로젯은 캡틴 채를 밖에 홀로 두고 배 안 구석구석에서 쓰러져 제발 멀미가 사라지기를 소망하며 쏟아지는 잠의 늪에 빠져버렸다. ｜5월 6일 오후 11시 여전한 멀미. 태평양에 이어 대한 해협을 건넜음에도 불구하고 나는 양파와 바람에 졌다. 졸려서 잔다기보다 멀미에 괴로워서 눈이 감겼고 마치 몸이 철로 둔갑된 것처럼 무거웠다. 주변을 보니 끙끙 앓는 소리를 낼 겨를도 없이 괴로워하는 크루들이 보였고, 밖에서는 분주하게 움직이는 든든한 캡틴 채가 있었다. 이 모든 과정을 담겠다며 고프로를 손에 쥐고 잠에 든 나는 문득 크루들이 밖에 나가 캡틴 채와 대화하는 소리에 눈을 떴다. ｜5월 6일 새벽 1시 여느 선장이 눈을 감고 배에 누워 있을 때 배가 1도라도 방향이 기우면 그것을 감지할 수 있다고 말한 걸 엿들은 적이 있다. 그때 나는 “쳇, 허세하곤”이라 비웃었는데, 8시간째 멀미로 탈진했던 내가 갑자기 변화를 느꼈다. 바람에 의해 팽팽하던 돛이 갑자기 바람이 없이 펄럭이는 느낌, 배가 급하게 한 바퀴를 도는 듯한 느낌에 번뜩 눈이 떠졌고, 아무런 비명도 외침도 없는 것에 섬뜩한 기분이 들어 밖으로 우당탕 뛰쳐나갔다. 밖을 보니 어둠 속에서 캡틴 채가 오토파일럿에서 키를 뽑아 수동으로 운전하고 있는 모습이 보였다. 표정이 태평하고 움직임이 흔들림 없어서 나는 내가 착각을 했나 싶기도 잠시, 캡틴 채 뒤의 광경을 보고 심장이 멎을 뻔했다. 63빌딩을 옆으로 뉜 듯한 크기의 거대한 화물선이 갑판 위의 사람과 하이파이브를 할 수 있을 것만 같은 거리에서 뉴솔트 배와 우두커니 맞닿아있었다. 아무런 소리가 안 나왔다. 아찔했고, 얼마나 위험한 순간을 지금 우리가 모면한 것인지 묻지 않아도 알 수 있었다. 화물선이 멀리 떠나고 파도가 안정적이게 된 다음에야 캡틴 채가 덤덤히 말했다. “화물선 불이 꺼져있어서 육지인 줄 알고 있었는데 가까워서야 움직이는 배인 걸 알고 급하게 피했어”. 얼마나 놀랬을까. 그 후부터는 나도 멀미고 추위고 다 달아나버려서 캡틴 채와 함께 불침번을 서며 제주도까지 함께 했다. 침착함. 그것이 없었더라면 지금 우리는 어떻게 되었을지 모른다! ｜5월 7일 새벽 4시 다행히도 김녕항에는 배를 세울 자리가 있었다. 육지의 마리나들은 모두 꽉 차 있어서 들어가도 세울 곳이 없어 큰일인데, 우리는 무탈하게 새들이 짹짹거리며 아침을 알리는 시간에 조심스럽게 제주도에 입항했다. 그날 아침은 간단하게 요리해서 먹고, 가족들에게 생존신고를 한 후 본격적인 제주도 탐방에 나섰다. 각자의 내면으로 떠난 제주도 ｜5월 7일 오후 3시 인터넷 연결이 안 되는 두 크루와 맛집 탐방을 원채 하지 않는 캡틴 둘은 제주도 한켠을 무작정 걸었다. 그렇게 아무 생각도 없이 걷다가 슈퍼가 보이면 필요한 음식을 사고, 그러다가 편의점이 보이면 아이스크림을 먹고, 또 그렇게 걷다 보니 다시 김녕항으로 돌아왔다. 새삼스럽게 다 같이 현무암 돌담을 보며 “아 맞다 우리 제주도로 왔지”라고 하며 함께 웃을 정도로 내가 어디에 있는지 보다는 ‘지금의 나는 어떤 마음인지’를 생각하며 걸었다. 각자 아무런 말을 하지 않아도, 거친 바다를 함께 건너온 것만으로도 충분히 정적 속에도 자연스럽게 곁에 있을 수 있게 되었다. 김녕항 → 도두 사수항 ｜5월 8일 오후 1시 오늘은 어제와 달리 순항이었다. 바람이 일정했고, 그렇게 우리는 흐르듯이 자연스럽게 도두 사수항으로 들어갈 채비를 마쳤다. 도두사수항은 짓다가 중단된 마리나였는데, 수심이 얕아 바다 밑이 보일 정도였다. 하지만 우리 배도 큰 것이 아니기 때문에 다행히 가까스로 배의 밑이 바닥을 닿지 않았고, 오히려 우리는 굉장히 프라이빗한 우리들만의 마리나가 생긴 격이었다. 배를 정박하고 우리는 유유자적 바다에서 하지 못한 수영과 태닝을 하고 그동안 밀린 일기를 쓰며 즐겼다. ｜5월 9일 마지막 날 프로젝트의 마지막 날이다. 각자가 아쉬웠던 점을 끝내 기록하기 위해 도두 사수항 근처를 탐방했다. 뉴솔트 크루들 항해의 마지막을 보고 있자니 나는 갑자기 내가 태평양 항해가 끝날 무렵의 나 자신이 기억났다. 태평양을 떠나기 전에 ‘사람’으로부터 자유롭고 싶다고 했지만, 그때 태평양 한복판에서조차도 함께 배를 탄 사람들로부터 힘들었기에 문제는 장소가 아니라 나의 마음이라고 깨달았었다. 이번 항해를 시작하기 전에도 나는 마테와 클로젯에게 각각 “무엇으로부터 자유롭고 싶은가?”하고 물었었다. 마테는 ‘본인의 의도를 가로막는 모든 것’이라고, 클로젯은 ‘소셜 네트워크’라고 했다. 그들도 나처럼 각자가 자유롭고 싶은 것이 사실 배를 타고 도망을 가서 해방된다는 착각이 아니라, 마음먹기에 달렸다는 것을 깨달았길 바란다. 그리고 그것을 무찌를 수 있는 단단한 심장을 키웠기를 진심으로 바라고 응원한다. 프로젝트 시작 전부터 지금까지도.
