Idols With A Cause

Hello Vingle Fam-

In July of 2013, BEAST appeared on an episode of Happy Together and something rather amazing happened. I'm not talking about the members showing off their abs (though that was nice), I'm talking about this:
The group's main vocalist, Yang Yoseob wore this purple bracelet, a gift from one of his fans, during the show's filming.
After the broadcast, the website that sells these silicone bracelets actually crashed due the sudden influx in orders.
So what's the big deal about these little bracelets?
They are called Blooming Bracelets and they bring awareness to the plight of Comfort Women.
"Comfort women were women and girls forced into prostitution to serve Japanese soldiers during World War II. Young women were abducted from their homes, or lured with promises of work in factories or restaurants. Once recruited, the women were incarcerated in “comfort stations” in foreign lands, deprived of their basic rights. Treated as little more than animals, they were forced to face several dozen men a day."
All proceeds from the sale of the bracelets "go directly to the “Daegu Citizen Forum for Halmuni” to improve the well-being of comfort women."
Of the documented Comfort Women, only 56 are still alive today, their average age is 90 years old. Weekly protests have been held in support of the Comfort Women outside of the Japanese embassy in Seoul for the past 21 years, despite which the Japanese Government has yet to issue a formal apology.
Yoseob, who has been seen wearing the bracelet on many occasions since the broadcast, has been called "gaenyeomdol (an idol with social consciousness)" for using his celebrity status to bring awareness to this worthy cause. In addition, the chairperson of the Committee for the Prevention of Historical Distortion in Northeast Asia personally thanked the vocalist.
His public support of woman's causes has not only labeled the singer as an idol who cares, but it has sparked a trend of social consciousness within the idol industry. In the years since Yoseob's appearance on Happy Family, many idols have also come out in support of the Comfort Woman's cause by wearing Blooming Bracelets.
VIXX's Leo and BTOB's Minhyuk.
SHINee's Taemin, Onew and Jonghyun.
GOT7's JB and Jinyoung.
Even rookie Taeyong of NCT fame has been spotted wearing the bracelets.
The Blooming Project was started by a group of students at Korea University who wished to bring about awareness to the often overlooked issue of Comfort Woman. They established a brand called Heeum and created a website. They were inspired by the Livestrong bracelets sported by Lance Armstrong and set about creating an inexpensive bracelet that could help raise money for the cause.
Since Yoseob and other idols started sporting the bracelets, the company has been able to expand to include Blooming bags and other goods and even hold events to educate the public on the issue. As multiple members of the project have noted, despite the plight of Comfort Women being an integral part of South Korea's history, many high school students and even adults were not aware of the issue prior to the public's knowledge of the Blooming Project.
The bracelets sell for 2000 won ($1.68 USD) and can be purchased through the group's website, HERE.

Is sad to heard what happened to the women/girls during the war. And this happened not only in Korea also in most Asia during the war, many were force to be "comfort women". There are many supporting groups bring this issue up for public to noticed. This is definitely something we should support!!!
I completely agree. It's sad to think that as a non-Asian American, I knew about comfort woman, while large numbers of the populace in a country where this is a part of their own history remain unaware. The suffering these woman went through is unimaginable and the scars are deep and for many, never heal. This is most definitely a cause we should all support.
This is a cause I want to support
I wanna buy some too!! This is such an important cause and I'm glad to see do many idols supporting it and giving it awareness. 💙
@sukkyongwanser it should automatically convert when you pay for it. it does for me when I buy stuff that only shows as ¥. since it's virtual I think it will automatically convert the currency.
I will be buying some. This is a great for a great cause. I knew women who did that. I want to support this but never knew how to. Thank you for the information. 😊

Yoseob Responds To Hyunseung's Apology?
Three days ago Hyunseung from Beast posted a very long apology about his behavior towards the end of his time as a member of Beast: “During the past seven years, as part of BEAST before I left the group, I received a lot of love,” he wrote. “Since I was young, I thought that the people who sing and dance on TV were really cool, so I embraced my big dream and trained for five years. Through a good opportunity, I was able to debut as BEAST with my members. After debuting, it seemed like I’d realized my dream, but while promoting there were things I was uncomfortable with and a thirst for music that couldn’t be resolved. Rather than focusing on group promotions and building teamwork, I was stubborn about my own affairs. Even when I listened to what other people had to say, I’d immediately focus again on my own stubbornness and pride, so I made it hard for my members and the other people around me. The wall between me and the members built up slowly and instead of choosing harmony, I chose to grow distant.I slowly lost the ability to control myself and showed bad attitude in public, including on stage. I thought that immature image of myself was me enjoying my youth. I thought all that was me being cool. Now that I look back on it, I am deeply regretful. It was difficult for me to say that I was sorry because of my stubbornness and needless pride. But after leaving the group, I experienced a lot of things and went through a hard time. After laying down my pride, I could finally hit the floor that I was stubbornly holding out from, and from that floor I came to a realization and became free. I have only given scars to other people. I now understand how my carelessness and selfish decisions hurt other people so I really want to say I’m sorry to those people. I’m sorry.” translation via soompi! He posted a photo on Instagram along with this apology, and his photo is on the right. Yeoseob, his former group member, posted the photo on the left yesterday with no caption. It was deleted soon after it was posted. Notice how its the same location, just different times? Some people are saying its a coincidence and Yoseob was just catching the awesome looking cloud, but personally the fact that its SO similar (and the Han river is really big so the chances of him taking it at almost the exact same spot is pretty rare considering how long with bridge is) makes me think its intentional. Yoseob was the one who actually introduced Hyunseung to Cube so they have a very special connection (other than being group mates for so long and being friends regardless of career dream differences) So to me, I see this as an acceptance of Hyunseung's apology, and I hope the boys all feel a little more at peace.

Get a Boy Group That Can Do Both
I dig a group who can commit to concepts, and I LOVE groups that can do a ton of different kinds. Originally this was going to be boy AND girl groups but I had too many boy groups so the girls will come next! Here are a few of my favorite groups that can hit both ends of the spectrum: BAP! One Shot vs Stop It The first is intense, hard core, and really dark. Even without the music video, this is just such an in-your-face dramatic song. Second is Stop It, one of their bouncier and happy-go-lucky songs. BAP is really, really good at doing both and I can't pick which type of song of theirs that I like. VIXX Voodoo vs GR8U Vixx are soooort of the concept kings and I love them for it. First up is their song and MV 'voodoo doll' which is sooo dark and creepy and dramatic. The music video is honestly a little gorey too and they legit act like they've lost their minds. In GR8U its just a super bright fun song with perrrrfect choreo!!! GOT7 Just Right vs If You Do GOT7's personalities are larger than life so its pretty obvious that they're going to be good at drama and fluff ;) In my opinion, they can slay both types of concepts! BTOB Thriller vs Second Confession BTOB is another group that can successfully pull off the dark and light concepts. I think Thriller and Second Confession are the best contrasts (plus I just really love Second Confession) Boyfriend Janus vs Boyfriend I know its not fair to judge a group by their debut track, but I genuinely love the song Boyfriend and this is my card so LOL! Boyfriend has changed their style a lot but I really like both their light and dark concepts. Janus is my favorite of the ~darker~ side. Infinite Man in Love vs Back I remember when Man in Love came out and I nearly combusted. I love how intense Infinite is but I lovelovelove the tracks on their albums that are super poppy and sweet too. For them to make one of them a single!? I was ded. It reminded me of baby Infinite's Nothings Over or She's Back. But really, intense Infinite is what we're all here for lol. TVXQ Balloons vs O omg this comparison is too hilarious! i could have used hug to show their sweet side but i will never miss an opportunity to share the balloons music video ;) There are many more but this card is getting too long! Leave your favorites in the comments! (dont get me started on BEAST)
