Korean Movie Club: Silenced
Trigger warning: Physical and sexual abuse of minors. The plot: Kang In-ho (Gong Yoo) is a new art teacher at Benevolence Academy, a deaf school for children (Based on the real-life Gwangju Inhwa School). He's excited to teach his new students, but they all seem afraid of him and even scared. In-ho does not give up, and eventually the students start to open up to him - and tell him horrifying things. The children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, he soon realizes the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth According to its summary: It is based on actual events that took place at Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired, where young deaf students were the victims of repeated sexual assaults by faculty members over a period of five years in the early 2000s The aftermath: The film looks at both the crimes, as well as the legal battle that followed. It showed the true story that the teachers who ABUSED THEIR STUDENTS were let off with minimal punishment. The nation was pissed. After its release, there was so much outrage from the citizens who watched the film, that the investigations were reopened. The demand for legislative reform reached all the way to the National Assembly, where a revised bill, dubbed the Dogani Bill, was passed in late October 2011 to abolish the limitations for sex crimes against minors and the disabled. I haven't seen it yet and will need to be emotionally ready, but I do want to see a film that sparked such a big change in Korea! You can watch it here on Dramanice. Is anyone else interested or has seen it before?
2 New K-Drama Recommendations
Here are two drama's I've recently started that I highly recommend! [Rugal] Main Cast: Choi Jin Hyuk, Park Sung Woong, Jo Dong Hyuk, Jung Hye In, Kim Min Sang, Park Sun Ho, Han Ji Wan Episodes: 16 (1 Hour & 10 Minute Episodes) - Currently Airing Genre: Action, Thriller, Drama, Sci-Fi Other Major Tags: Adapted from a Webtoon Synopsis: Kang Ki Beom (Choi Jin Hyuk) is an elite police officer whose attempt to bring down Argos, a nationwide criminal organization, results in a group of masked assailants from Argos killing his beloved wife and child and cutting out both of his eyes. Kang wakes up in a hospital only to find himself accused of murdering his family members. The NIS then approaches him with an offer to become a member of Rugal, a special team organized by the NIS. He receives two artificial eyes with Rugal's biotechnology built into them and with them gains unique new abilities with which to take down criminal organizations. Kang Ki Beom and Rugal set out on a mission to wipe out Argos. (Sources: Asianwiki, Soompi) My Comments: If you liked the movies Deadpool (in a sense that he gains his abilities through other ways than just being born with them) or idk any super hero movie really you may like this drama. It gives off that kind of feel. Kind of like a dystopian theme but not really. Only two episodes are out so far and while not much has been revealed about most of the cast it still has potential to be a really good drama! [365: Repeat the Year] Main Cast: Lee Joon Hyuk, Nam Ji Hyun, Kim Ji Soo Episodes: 24 (30 Minute Episodes) - Currently Airing Genre: Thriller, Drama, Mystery, Fantasy Other Major Tags: Adapted from a Novel, Time Travel, Suspense, Detective, (while not listed I think it's a bit sci-fi-ish because of the time traveling) Synopsis: I have only watche 4 of the episodes so far. It's very intriguing. It brings up the point almost every time travel show/movie/drama would bring up, if you change something in the past then it's like a domino effect of stuff changing. Only 4 episodes (2 hour length episodes if you will) and already 4 of the characters have died. But not everything is as it seems (I believe anyways.) This drama is definitely worth checking out! always knows how to relax. Though he is happy at first to have the chance to go back in time by one year and "reset" his life, he begins to search for the truth when a series of mysterious events befall on the group of people he goes back in time with. Top 5 Kdrama Actors And Actresses That Need To Come Back To Dramas
I'm pretty satisfied with the current dramascape, in terms of my biases taking on dramas left and right (Yoon Eun Hye doing I Miss You, Park Shi Hoo coming out with Cheongdamdong Alice, which is going to be terrible but lets delusion ourselves here for a moment) But a ton of my beloved actors and actresses have been missing in action, some for years, others for months and their absence has been equally upsetting to me. Here is my list of actors and actresses that need a comeback, in order of priority: Actors - 1) Jung Il Woo - I know that Moon That Embraces the Sun is quite recent but I last seen him in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and it was the drama that made me fall in love with him. His acting can be a little too much but he is such delicious eye candy; he needs to do another comedy so I can be simultaneously smitten and entertained by him. 2) Lee Min Ki - I've only watched Dal Ja's Spring and Shut Up Flower Boy Band with him but this guy is a powerhouse both in acting and looks. It's a shame that it's been years since he starred in a drama. At this point, I don't have much hope left for his comeback, do you? 3) Lee Dong Wook - his last drama (Wild Romance) is comparably recent although it does feel like it's been a long time ago. I haven't managed to get into that drama so it's been a LDW drought for me since Scent of a Woman. Earnestly waiting and hoping for another project from him! 4) Hyun Bin - he is been in the army in the last two years leaving a huge void in the kdrama industry that no one has managed to fill. Can he announce his new project like next week? 5) Seo In Guk - yes, I know his recent drama is really really recent (Answer Me 1997, just this summer) but I already want this guy back on my screen! Besides, his costar Eun Ji has moved on to a new drama and he should too. Update: ohh, apparently Seo In Guk is in a drama right now! It's a weekend/family drama called Rascal Sons. How did it fly under my radar! Actresses - 1) Han Hyo Joo - she is a big bias of mine ever since Spring Waltz and Brilliant Legacy. She has been doing a lot of movies but nothing on the kdrama front. Again, at this point I've lost hope that she will ever come back to dramas. 2) Ha Ji Won - loved, loved her performance in King2hearts and since I have no problems with typecasting nothing will make me more happy than to see her comeback with another badass and awesome role. 3) Yoo In Na - she has totally won me over with her performance in Queen In Huyn's Man and I'm really looking forward to seeing her adorable smile back on screen. 4) Kim Sun Ah - her latest project I Do, I Do is also quite recent but there can never be too much Kim Sun Ah, ever! I feel her range of characters becomes more limiting as she gets older but I'm always amazed at how well she delivers in every single role she takes on. 5) Seo Ye Jin - I've only seen her in Personal Taste but I really enjoyed her acting in that drama. She's been doing movies it seems, but no one cares about those, so she better do another drama! Honorable mention goes to Jang Geun Suk who I miss dearly but who is going through some crazy phase making bizarre MVs in Japan and clubbing and I give him permission to enjoy himself before he comes back to dramas. For the actresses, honorable mention goes out to Suzy who needs another main lead role! (so we can all forget the horror that was Big) Did I miss anyone important? Who do you want to see make a comeback?
