This weekend, I attended my very first traditional Chinese wedding, as two friends who I study Korean with ended up falling in all sorts of love and decided to spend the rest of their lives together. The wedding was completely amazing. I loved being able to meet their families, learn all about their specific wedding customs and, of course, eat a ridiculous amount of Cantonese food. (In Chinese tradition, weddings can serve anywhere from 10 - 12 courses. Ours stopped right at 11!) One of the very last dishes we ate was Hóng Dòu Tāng, a sweet red bean soup served in a thin broth with simmered lotus seeds. I have seen this dish around, especially at the Taiwanese tea house I'm often frequenting, and couldn't wait to try it myself. The soup is a wonderful combination of sweet and savory, and the lotus seed has a nice nutty flavor and texture similar to peanuts. You should be able to find all of these ingredients at most Asian markets. This recipe can be made without lotus seeds, of course, but lotus seeds are full of good nutrition and are constantly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat anything from insomnia to gastrointestinal problems - which is why it's the perfect bowl to end the night with! ------------------------------------------------------ Sweet Red Bean Soup (Hóng Dòu Tāng) 1 cup red beans (You can probably find these canned, but fresh is best if possible.) 15 dried lotus seeds 1 piece dried tangerine peel 4 - 5 tablespoons brown sugar Water 1 - 2 tablespoons fine glutinous rice flour in equal parts of water for thickening to your desired consistency Some coconut milk for drizzling over soup 1. Wash red beans in several rinses of water until water runs clear of dirt and grit. Put into a pot, fill with water to a height equivalent to the length of your index finger - roughly 2 inches - above the beans. Bring to a boil, and let par-boil for 15 minutes. Turn off heat, cover with lid, and let it sit for half an hour to let the hot water soften the tough bean husks. 2. Meanwhile, soak dried tangerine peel in water for 15 minutes or until soft. Using the blunt end of a small knife, scrape off the pith on the inside of the peel. Wash clean, and then wash the lotus seeds as well. 3. Bring the pot of red beans back to a boil, add the washed tangerine peel, lotus seeds, and half of the brown sugar. Reduce to medium heat, let simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the beans are soft. Skim foam off the surface as it forms. Add water if the liquid reduces too much. When beans are soft and cracked open, do a taste test and add sugar to your desired sweetness. 4. To thicken the soup slightly, stir the glutinous rice flour solution into the soup, little by little, letting the heat cook through before adding more. Stop when desired consistency is reached. Dish out into serving bowls, drizzled with some coconut milk, if desired.

There are ways to stop sweet cravings naturally without restricting yourself or adhering to a rigorous diet, however, cravings can be inconvenient and difficult to ignore. I started looking for ways to help me avoid sweets because I had a problem with sugar cravings. Some people occasionally experience cravings for sugar. That is not a big problem.  However, some people, like me, graze for sweets after every meal. Yes, it’s now rooted in my habits. Only when I give my stomach some sweets do my mind and stomach feel fulfilled. Usually, I eat healthy foods. But what’s the use? Along with that, I take sweets & snacks too which makes me fat and also Lil bit unhealthy. Earlier, I used to stock biscuits, and sweets in my house so that I can eat them at any time I have sweet cravings. Now I have replaced sweets & biscuits with protein bars like peanut burfi, sesame burfi, etc. Some of my friends also told me that they will also eat sweets after food. However, sweets can increase digestion, eating them more leads to many diseases and is unhealthy. Even I am aware of which shop sells the best sweets in my locality. Due to diabetes in my family, I am concerned. There is a greater chance of also catching me. I’ll get it very quickly if I keep eating this way. We must first recognize the difference between hunger and cravings. If you are trying to lose weight and are eating too little, you may frequently feel hungry. To solve this issue, you need to eat less frequently. It is known as a sugar craving if you eat to your fullest capacity and then feel the urge to consume something very sweet. I gonna share some of my strategies and tricks to curb sugar cravings at any time of the day, whether you’re experiencing mid-morning snack cravings, need your daily 4 o’clock munchie fix, need to satisfy your after-dinner sweet desires, or need a late-night fix. How to stop sugar cravings instantly? 1. 28Days rule Everything is decided by the mind. If you choose to refrain from sugar for a continuous 28 days, it becomes a habit. Although it takes time, it has been proven to lessen cravings. But make up your mind first. Tell your mind that eating sweets is unhealthy. Every time you feel like eating sweets, say it four to five times. 2. Brush your teeth After a meal, brushing your teeth can quickly eliminate sugar cravings. Your lips will taste minty fresh after using the toothpaste, which will discourage you from reaching for something sweet. 3. Go for a walk Staying away from the food you are craving is a simple approach. Endorphins, or “feel good” hormones, are released when you walk briskly or exercise and they can assist to curb cravings. 4. Low-carb meal with protein Start your day with a low-carb meal with protein to manage your blood sugar and insulin levels throughout the day. It helps to prevent your sugar cravings.  Select a good protein source such as organic eggs, almonds, seeds, fish, poultry, grass-fed red meat, or homemade protein shakes & powder. I use homemade collagen powder which is rich in protein. 5. Healthy fats Sugar makes you obese but healthy fats don’t. On the other hand, healthy fats support blood sugar regulation, prolong feelings of satiety, fuel and energize cells, offer your body the components necessary to produce healthy hormones, support intestinal lining repair, and the list goes on.  Snack on avocados, nuts, seeds, or nut butter. An apple with almond or sunflower seed butter is my go-to sugar-busting snack. To feel full and help prevent sugar cravings, you can also freely use extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil in your cooking and on salads. 6. Small & frequent meals Eat smaller, frequent meals to help maintain a stable blood sugar level and reduce your body’s desire for an immediate sugar boost. 7. Chew sugar-free gum According to a recent study, chewing Extra sugar-free gum may help regulate appetite, lower caloric consumption, and lessen cravings for sweet foods.  Chewing Extra sugar-free gum dramatically reduced the number of calories consumed in an afternoon snack by 40, according to research from Louisiana State University and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. 8. Shrimp after washing, soaking in salt water for 3-5 minutes, remove the head, peel the shell, remove the black thread on the back and wash the dirty part of the shrimp head. Finally, blanch in boiling water and remove to cool.  Step 2: Processing pork belly Bacon is only washed, cut into small pieces, put in the pan, slightly browned. Then pour the meat into the prepared shrimp, season with ½ teaspoon of pepper, ½ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of fish sauce and leave for 5-7 minutes to infuse the spices.  Step 3: Make Thanh Hoa shrimp paste The standard recipe for Thanh Hoa shrimp paste is to pound the meat and shrimp in a stone mortar until they blend together into a beautiful pink color. Although it takes a bit of time, pounding the rolls by hand will help retain the sweetness of the meat and shrimp and when you eat, you will still feel the full flavor than putting it in the blender. If you don't have time, you can still put the meat and shrimp in the blender, but don't grind too much or the meat will be crushed.(Photo: Collected) Step 4: Prepare fresh gac fruit Soak fresh gac with white glutinous rice wine for 3-5 minutes to slightly peel off the outer membrane, then remove the seeds, keeping the flesh. Mix half a teaspoon of sugar, add water to the gac, then grind or pound it and then mix the gac with the shrimp meat above to create a beautiful red color.  Step 5: Stir fried shrimp paste The next step in how to make Thanh Hoa shrimp cakes is to stir-fry the shrimp paste. You peel the onion, garlic, chili, mince it and put it on the pan to fry it, then pour the mixed shrimp meat and gac into the island.  At this point, you add 1 teaspoon of fish sauce, 1 teaspoon of seasoning, 1 teaspoon of pepper and stir until the meat is cooked, infuse the spices and then let it out.  Step 6: Roll cha This is the final step in making Thanh Hoa shrimp paste. You cut pho into small rectangular pieces about the palm of your hand, add the cooked fried filling and roll it into small spring rolls.  When rolling, you should try to make sure your hands are tight so that when baking the filling does not come out.(Photo: Collected) You can grill each one directly or clip it to a bamboo stick to bake several at a time. When you see that the outer shell is golden, crispy, slightly burnt with a fragrant aroma, then the shrimp paste is cooked and can be enjoyed immediately.  Step 7: How to make the right shrimp paste dipping sauce Thanh Hoa shrimp cakes are delicious thanks to the sweet and sour sauce served, this can be considered the "soul" of the dish. To make the right dipping sauce, you just need to mix 3 tablespoons of fish sauce with 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of MSG, 1 tablespoon of pepper, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 pinch of chili and minced garlic, add the squeezed papaya. For the longest time I only have one reason for visiting Japan. Nope, it's not for food. Nope, it's not for fashion. Yes. It's for hot spring! I may look an average 20 something gal but I'm a grandma at heart. I've been told that many times because of my peculiar lifestyle. I love jacuzzi and hot spring is one of the thing I've always wanted to try after watching dramas that features this fabulous chamber. Even though I really wanted to visit Japan I didn't think hot spring would justify the trip because Taiwan also have hot spring. The ticket and accommodation in Taiwan is more budget-friendly than Japan. It was not until today I found another reason to go visit Japan. Books & Bed This concept is really intriguing. Though, I don't openly express it, I'm a manga girl at heart. Throw me in a room with a bunch of manga and I will be more than happy to read them. This is place is truly a gem for book lovers and someone who appreciates minimal architect. At Book and Bed Hostel you get a beautiful view of the city at night and get unlimited access to book in their library until your eyes become drowsy. The industrial interior design is filled with cement walls, wooden bookshelves and wooden single beds. Obviously, it's not a place for you to get a comfy pillow and cozy bed. If you are solo or duo traveler, this is the type of place that will bring you a blissful evening. What more do you want from a short vacation getaway than a place to sleep and get inspired?
