[Travel Diary] Three Days in Tokyo 2017

My mom and I just got back from a week in Japan, where we spend 2.5 days in Tokyo, and 4 days in Kyoto!

I already shared my videos of the sakura in Kyoto, but wanted to share my Tokyo videos and photos too!

Here's what my trip looked like~

First 2 Days:

We arrived late night at Narita Airport, and took the train into Tokyo. We were staying in Shinjuku, so after we got to the AirBnb and dropped off our stuff, we headed out to the Golden Gai to look around and find food. The Golden Gai is a collection of really tiny bars and eateries that usually only have 5-6 seats. Its fun to just wander the alleys and see what you can find :)
The next morning we headed straight to Harajuku to visit the Meiji Shrine. It was early in the morning and it was sooo peaceful - definitely check out my video, its gorgeous! After that we grabbed breakfast in Harajuku and just wandered the shopping streets. I hit up my favorite used clothing store and found some cute things^^

After that, I was lucky enough to visit YouTube Space Tokyo! It had an amazing view of the city and is a studio where lots of YouTubers can come to make videos and use YouTube's really expensive equipment haha!
The next day we went to the Imperial Palace to see the cherry blossoms but there weren't that many out yet, then headed to a Peter Rabbit themed cafe that was ADORABLE.
The next day we went to Kyoto, and you can check out all that footage HERE!

Last day:

After 4 days in Kyoto we came back for about 24 hours in Tokyo before our flights home :(

We dropped off our bags and headed to Shibuya Crossing because it wouldn't be a trip to Tokyo without it! We sat in the Starbucks overlooking the crosswalk and just people watched for hours.

The next morning I had time to grab coffee at a cafe I've really wanted to go to, and then we headed to the airport.

It was a really chill time in Tokyo but was a lot of fun!

Thanks for joining me on my trip^^

A Blissful Place for Manga Lovers!
For the longest time I only have one reason for visiting Japan. Nope, it's not for food. Nope, it's not for fashion. Yes. It's for hot spring! I may look an average 20 something gal but I'm a grandma at heart. I've been told that many times because of my peculiar lifestyle. I love jacuzzi and hot spring is one of the thing I've always wanted to try after watching dramas that features this fabulous chamber. Even though I really wanted to visit Japan I didn't think hot spring would justify the trip because Taiwan also have hot spring. The ticket and accommodation in Taiwan is more budget-friendly than Japan. It was not until today I found another reason to go visit Japan. Books & Bed This concept is really intriguing. Though, I don't openly express it, I'm a manga girl at heart. Throw me in a room with a bunch of manga and I will be more than happy to read them. This is place is truly a gem for book lovers and someone who appreciates minimal architect. At Book and Bed Hostel you get a beautiful view of the city at night and get unlimited access to book in their library until your eyes become drowsy. The industrial interior design is filled with cement walls, wooden bookshelves and wooden single beds. Obviously, it's not a place for you to get a comfy pillow and cozy bed. If you are solo or duo traveler, this is the type of place that will bring you a blissful evening. What more do you want from a short vacation getaway than a place to sleep and get inspired? Anyone else feel the same way?
Tokyo Travel: A Day In Harajuku
Back in February I spent a few days in Tokyo. Here's a look into my day spent in Harajuku :) It all started at the Meiji Shrine in Yoyogi Park. I mistakenly took the subway from my Airbnb to Harajuku in Tokyo's famous rush hour. The train was absolutely packed and there were men working for the station who helped show people on. Luckily, I grabbed a good spot and was able to hop on and off easily without being squished. I then took a peaceful walk through the nearly deserted paths leading to the shrine. I was able to walk around, catching glimpses of monks rushing around, and listen to some chanting. I got myself a talisman for peace of mind and headed back into the bustling city. I then took a loooooong walk to the best latte I've ever had. The cafe is called Streamer Coffee Co. and their military latte is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It contains chocolate, green tea, while chocolate, and espresso. I know that sounds like a total mess but the flavors meshed perfectly! I was able to hang out there for a while, using their wifi and reading the book I brought with me. Once I felt ready to leave, I headed to Number Sugar. This tiny shop sells handmade caramels in all different flavors. You can buy adorable box sets and the lovely girls working there will be sure you get exactly what you want. They aren't even that expensive which is awesome! It was about $0.70 for each piece (twice the size of the photo, I had already eaten most of it haha!) I got vanilla caramel and almond caramel! After that I went to Kiddy Land where I went to each of the 4 stories trying not to buy everything that had Totoro on it. I was pretty successful and only got myself a Spirited Away mug, though I did buy quite a few presents for friends and family :) From there I ventured down Harajuku's most famous street filled with places selling crepes, crazy Japanese fashion, and tons of toys. It is here that I found my true love. I really love takoyaki. They're just batter, onions, pickled ginger, and squid (tako in Japanese) fried in a special pan and covered in a mayo-sauce, fish flakes, and some spices. They are HEAVENLY. This man made works at Koi-Tako (aka Love Squid) and made me some perrrrrfect Kimchi Takoyaki (yeah I know, why Kimchi in Japan???) But then it got weird... You can't see it really well in the photo, but they put GOLDEN GLITTER on my takoyaki. Why you ask? I DON'T KNOW. I ate it though, and didn't die. So, there's that. I grabbed a sakura green tea (oi ocha is the best bottled tea EVER) and headed back towards my home in Shinjuku. I'd give yourself a solid 2-3 hours to take Harajuku in at a slow pace. It's worth it!

Eiichiro Oda and Hajime Isayama Show Support After Kumamoto Earthquakes
If you missed the news lately, the Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan was recently hit with a series of earthquakes, the foreshock on April 14th and the mainshock on April 16th. The earthquakes reached a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale and have devastated the communities of the Prefecture and surrounding area, including as far away as the ลŒita prefecture. 48 people have been confirmed dead, while thousands more have been hospitalized with injury. Over 40,000 people have been evacuated from their homes as a result of the quakes. The image you see above is a message penned by Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka responsible for One Piece. Kumamoto is Oda's hometown and so he felt personally attached to plights of the people there. The official One Piece twitter tweeted that image of a hand-drawn Luffy and Kumamon, the official mascot of the prefecture. Here's what it says in English: There was a big earthquake in Kumamoto. (all of Kyushu) I was born in Kumamoto, it's my hometown. To those who were greatly affected by the damage, I hope you're doing well from the bottom of my heart. I was able to directly contact my family and friends, but they're all very scared. But they're doing their best. Everyone I got in touch with said things to put me at ease. They're so tough!! But there is a limit to how long people can steel themselves. Before that thread breaks, I want to calm them down somehow. It's crucial that adults don't worry their kids. Most of all, I want to make kids laugh! If they laugh, adults can do their best! It's still hard now for ordinary people to lend a hand, but I will definitely help with the relief effort. Stay strong, however you can!! Oda was not the only member of the One Piece team to speak up in support of the earthquake victims, however. The voice actors for the Straw Hat Pirates also lent their voices to support Kyushu. Ikue Ohtani (Chopper), Kazuya Nakai (Zoro), Akemi Okamura (Nami), Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin), Kazuki Yao (Franky), Kappei Yamaguchi (Usopp), and Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy) each have promised to do their bests to help the victims in some way or at least encourage them to stay strong and happy. Each of them signed the board above as a gesture of support for the struggling civilians. The Strawhats weren't the only anime/manga stars to lend their voices to the effort, though. Hajime Isayama, the mangaka for Attack on Titan is also from close to the affected region: Hita in ลŒita Prefecture. Isayama also contributed a drawing as support for the victims. It shows Eren, Mikasa and Armin with Kumamon and Mejiron, ลŒita Prefecture's bird mascot. Isayama wrote on his blog accompanying the image: "When times have been tough for me, even under very harsh circumstances, I'm reminded of manga heroes who fight for their lives, and I remember that they toughed it out. I drew the illustration with those feelings." Though these artists can't do a whole lot in terms of helping on the ground level with the victims, they have chosen to lend their support in the best ways they have available to them; their art. It shows a passion for their homes and their people, and the will of the nation that rallies strongly around their own in times of crisis.
Make A Fist. Then Read This Card.
So I just learned about something cool today called Kobushi Shindan. Have any of you heard about it? Kobushi Shindan (literally, 'fist analysis' in Japanese) is an ancient samurai personality test. All you need to do to take it is make a fist! So make a fist, any fist, and find out what your personal fist form says about you! Fist #1: Your thumb rests on your index finger. People with this fist shape tend to be natural leaders. You like helping others and, likewise, appreciate being leaned on for support. However, despite a strong exterior, you have the tendency to be a bit insecure. In relationships, you are extremely devoted and expect that same kind of loyalty in return. You put others before yourself, and since you're not necessarily good at words, you put that love into compassionate action. Fist #2: Your thumb rests in the middle of your fist. You're a free-spirit with a wide range of talents and plenty of friends. However, you tend to be afraid to try new things because you fear failure. And despite the fact you have a wide group of friends, the amount of friends you consider close is considerably smaller. In love, that fear of failure makes it hard for you to begin romantic relationships, but because of your kind and sociable nature, you're a pretty attractable potential mate! Fist #3: You tuck your thumb underneath fingers. You're much more introverted than the other two personality types. You're a sensitive and private person, and while you don't have a huge social network, the few friends you do have are extremely close and loyal to you. You hate conflict and tend to internalize your feelings, but your compromising nature makes you very attentive in your romantic relationships, which tends to make them pretty long-term. So which fist did you guys get? Do you think Kobushi Shindan has got you all figured out, or are there some things you disagree with?
