Isn’t She Lovely

Parents always tell you how horrible and hard it is bringing home a newborn, but I didn’t realize just how exhausted I would be when the baby just won’t stop crying. Today was the 2nd month home with our daughter and it was probably the worst day out of them all because she wouldn’t let me sleep at all. I felt terrible, but I was sure Cory felt worse as he had to deal with our daughter screaming through the baby monitor as I tried to calm her down and then had to go to work. Although I did come to the conclusion that she was a daddy’s girl as she would calm down so much faster for Cory.

I sat tiredly in the rocking chair and just slowly rocked as I fed her. She was starting to fall asleep when she suddenly woke up and started to scream. I sighed and tried to burp her and when that didn’t work I checked her diaper. I didn’t know what was wrong. Holding her I started rocking slowly and shushing her which, to my surprise, worked. She fell asleep and I put her in the cot and quietly walked into our room and laid down on the bed, checking the baby monitor to see if it was on. I closed my eyes and quickly fell asleep.

To only be woken up an hour later to her screams through the baby monitor. I felt tears of frustration well up in my eyes, but I sucked it up and made my way to the nursery. I was surprised to see Cory standing there, holding our baby and quietly singing to her.

“Cory? When did you get home?” I asked, rubbing my tired eyes and leaning against the wall as I stared at our baby calmly laying in her father’s arms, just looking around with big brown eyes.

“Like 5 minutes ago. I was hoping to catch her before she started her screaming fit.” He smiled and kissed me on my forehead. “You look exhausted babe. Go to bed, I got her.”

“You look exhausted too. I know you got barely any sleep last night. I tried to get her to quiet down, but she wasn’t having any of it.” I sighed and rubbed her chubby cheeks, which she furrowed her brows to. “She says that she was with Mommy for 9 months and she’s sick of her. She only wants Daddy.”
“I don’t see how. I, for one, love spending time with you.” He laughed, kissing me. “Seriously though, go to bed. We still have some bottled breast milk and I don’t work tomorrow so, Daddy’s got this. Isn’t that right, baby girl?” He cooed, causing our daughter to smile widely.

“You better like me when you’re older. Daddy isn’t going to help you when you get your first period or boyfriend.”

“Crystal, you’re never going to have a boyfriend while Daddy is around. You hear me?” He pointed at her, which made me laugh. He looked up at me and smiled, then pointed to our room. “Gooo to beeed.”

“Are you sure? I can take her.”

“I may not have been able to do anything for you during the delivery, but I can handle a fussy baby. I know you haven’t been sleeping very much because of the baby. So don’t worry, Daddy has it handled. Mommy can just go to bed. Right, Crystal?” He asked, bouncing the baby slightly. I sighed and nodded.

“Alright, alright, I’m going. Goodnight.” I kissed Crystal’s cheek and Cory kissed my forehead.

“Night. I love you.”

“I love you too. See you in the morning.” I said, slowly walking out of the room and around the corner to our room.

As I laid down on the bed, I heard Cory get closer to the baby monitor and sit in the rocking chair before he started singing again.

“Isn’t she lovely
Isn’t she wonderful
Isn’t she precious
Less than one minute old
I never thought through love we’d be
Making one as lovely as she
Isn’t she lovely made from love
Isn’t she pretty
Truly the angel’s best”

I smiled to myself as I closed my eyes and was lulled to sleep by my husband’s voice.
