Should Mermaid Tails Be Banned From Swimming Pools?
Every little girl dreams of how it'd be to live a day as a mermaid. Their wavy ocean hair and sparkling fins are equal parts luxurious and ethereal. They can breathe underwater, they make friends with fish, and - let's be honest - they're way cooler than just being some storybook princess. With this in mind, it makes sense why FinFun is so popular. FinFun is a UK-based company that specializes in creating swimmable mermaid tails suitable for the 'landlubber' with dreams of grandeur. For about $40 - 60 USD, you can buy a child- or adult-sized a shimmery 'monofin' made out of a lightweight polyester-spandex blend. Since 2010, the company has been selling a steady stock of these tails. However, it wasn't long before some parents and local governments were pushing back. Above, you can see a PSA created by an outraged parents' group with an alarming video of a time one girl almost drowned in her family pool by wearing the monofin design. In addition, several major cities in Canada banned the tails from their local pools, citing that the tails are most popular with small children, commonly "weak swimmers" who cannot swim well with their legs bound together in such a fashion. The City of Edmonton's Rob Campbell, supervisor of aquatic strategies, added that swimming with a monofin "promotes breath-holding which can result in blackouts.” The official FinFun website responded by creating a 'safety' section of their website, complete with a swimming 'test' you should do with your child prior to purchasing a FinFun mermaid tail for them. The company adds that monofins ARE safe for use, claiming: "Our tails and monofins meet the Child Protection Safety Commission requirements (CPSC) for the United States and Australia and over a period of four years and over 500,000 FinFun mermaid tails sold we have had zero reported incidents involving our tails." Is banning mermaid tails from city pools a move that's too cautious? Or is using one as dangerous as it seems? Would you buy one for your child? Childhood Leukemia
Leukemia — Cancer of blood is called Leukemia. It develops in the bone marrow. Bone marrow is a soft inner part of the bone (such as thigh and hip bone) where new RBC, WBC & Platelets are formed. As we know, bone marrow also produces WBC or Leucocytes. As soon as the number of mature WBC is enough, then the body sends a signal to stop new cells’ formation. But in Leukemia, these newly formed cells stay immature for a long time. Consequently, the body cannot send any signal, so new cells form inside the bone marrow. The bone marrow becomes crowded with immature and abnormal WBC. Childhood Leukemia — Children of the age group of a newborn child to a 19-year-old. According to a study conducted in 2018, 29% of cancer in children is of childhood leukemia. The most common Leukemia in children is ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and AML (Acute myeloid leukemia). Early Symptoms of Childhood Leukemia a. Dull or pale skin b. Weakness or feeling of tiredness c. Headaches and Dizziness d. Trouble in breathing e. Fever and frequent infection f. Bleeding gums or nosebleeds Types of Childhood Leukemia: Leukemia typically in kids can be categorized into two major types. A. Common types of Leukemia a. Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), also called acute lymphocytic Leukemia is fast-growing Leukemia of lymphoid cells. This type is widespread in kids; it’s the proliferation of B and T cells lymphocyte precursor. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) accounts for 75–85% of cases of childhood leukemia. b. Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML): AML is also a common type of childhood leukemia. This is the fast-growing Leukemia of myeloid cells. B. Rare types of Leukemia a. Hybrid or mixed-lineage Leukemia: This is chromosome-related Leukemia where part of chromosome 11 translocates to any other chromosome. Children having mixed-lineage Leukemia have a poor prognosis. b. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia: This is slow-growing Leukemia of myeloid cells. c. Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): CLL is very rare in children. This is the slow-growing Leukemia of lymphoid cells. d. Juvenile myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML): This is a scarce type of childhood leukemia where WBC production in bone marrow is severely dysregulated. Diagnosis of Childhood Leukemia There are various tests to diagnose and confirm childhood leukemia. These tests also help in classifying the type of Leukemia. The initial tests include: a) Blood tests to measure the number of blood cells and see how they appear. b) Biopsy and Bone marrow aspiration test: To confirm Leukemia, a tissue sample is usually taken from the pelvic bone. c) Spinal Tap test or Lumbar puncture: This test is done to know the spread of cancer cells in the fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) present in the spinal cord or brain. These tests also determine the method of treatment to be followed. Risk factors of Childhood Leukemia More study is needed to explore the possible reasons, but few of them are environmental factors like exposure to radiation, smoking, genetic factors, inherited problems related to immune systems, etc. Treatment of Childhood Leukemia: Once the oncologist confirms the diagnosis, the child will undergo chemotherapy medicines. In highly developed countries, the cure rate for ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia) is more than 80–90%, and for acute myeloid Leukemia, it is more than 60–70%. In developing countries, poor accessibility or affordability, malnutrition, poor tolerability to treatment, and delayed diagnosis bring down the cure rate to almost 70% in ALL and around 50% in AML. a) Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses powerful chemicals and is done to target and kill cancerous cells. Chemotherapy works throughout the body. b) Blood Transfusion: This is a process of transferring healthy blood components into a patient’s blood circulation system intravenously. This process helps in replacing red blood cells, platelets, and other blood components. c) Radiation Therapy: This is also known as Radiotherapy or RT or XRT. This therapy uses a beam of ionizing radiation to kill the cancer cells. d) Bone Marrow Transplant: BMT is performed to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow. In this process, blood stem cells are transplanted into the circulation. Later on, these blood stem cells reach the bone marrow area to produce and promote new blood cells. Treatment of Relapsing Leukemia Despite chemotherapy, around 20% of ALL and about 40–50% of AML can come back with the disease within two to five years of initial diagnosis. This reoccurrence of infection is called relapse. Again, these children will go through a similar test like complete blood count, bone marrow evaluation to confirm the deterioration. After confirmation, they will have to undergo a higher dose of chemotherapy of a different combination or Bone Marrow Transplant. Carbon Bike Wheels
Carbon Bike Wheels Biking is healthful, and a competitive sport requiring adrenalin flow, stamina, and speed. With constant practice, a cyclist can improve over these aspects given the time frame. One other factor that influences the competency of the rider is the supremacy of the bike in use. So, a cyclist must use a high-quality bike and keep in trend with the more functional carbon bicycle wheels. In case to keep the bike rolling the wheels should extend smooth and dependable hubs for riding. High stiffness is meant for exact tracking. Moreover, it should be able to hold the tyre at great pressure. The braking system should be consistent. At the same time, the bike should be lightweight and aerodynamically efficient when riding. Carbon bike wheels at present are one of the must-have accessories for a serious cyclist. Carbon bike wheels are the best choice to upgrade any bike. The performance benefits are immense compared to a basic pair of wheels. Once you have customized your bike you will discover carbon bike wheels have improved in qualities like · Stiffness-carbon rims are mostly stiff and extend more support in the corner. · Quality · Affordability · A light-Weight-the cyclist can ride the bike at amazingly fast speed. · Appearance cool · Aerodynamics leading to faster rides. · Stability · Greater braking · Comfort All these qualities create a perfect harmony between rider, road bike and the wheelset. The bike is easy to accelerate and decelerate. Carbon bike wheel is used for climbing to triathlon. Carbon bike wheels are devised to get the best balance between weight, aerodynamics, and stiffness. The bike then becomes sufficiently light to climb uphill and equally smooth for speedy downwards rides. Even at the time of contests, the cycle is capable of rapid acceleration. Thus, in short, carbon bike wheels take up any type of force when applied to the bike pedals is quickly transferred to wheels with slight loss. The designs are many in carbon bike wheels for races. For instance, bike wheels using tube-shaped carbon bars are extremely useful when climbing on sharp turns. The tube-shaped format of carbon bars produces stable resistance against compression and other tension forces by making the carbon wheels very quick to react and unalterable. The bike can generate momentum from a small quantum of the force applied to it. Carbon bike wheels range The variety in carbon bike wheels are - · Cost-effective carbon bike wheels are with aluminium frames concealed with carbon. · The costly ones come with alloy hubs and spokes along with total carbon rims. · The luxury carbon bike wheels are with carbon hubs and carbon rims. At times titanium alloy is part of the construction. · Lightweight carbon bike wheels are made from carbon with little alloys. Carbon Wheelset
Carbon Wheelset Carbon wheelset made its appearance in the early nineties as the manufacturers began experimenting with the material which was used with the reputation of high-performance in Formula One. In the field of biking, it made an entry in 1989. Some categories of riders mostly racers the attraction of carbon wheels is beckoning. The acceptance of factory constructed wheelsets has encouraged its use by consumers. Upgrading a wheelset is now an easy job for customers and detail specifications can be compared with ease. The carbon wheelset is the market innovator right on the top as a choice. It is so because it improves the rider's capability and performance. The cost structure is significant still the carbon wheelset market has developed significantly surpassing in sales to lower-priced wheelsets. The consumers have achieved new gratitude for the aerodynamic performance of wheels. The four components of a wheel are · Rim · Hub · Spokes · Nipples Most of the carbon wheelset is purchasable in tubular and clincher form. The rims are fitted with rim brakes and some with disc brakes. The package is inclusive of a disc wheel. The rim height and width differ or else shaped depending on the model. The front wheels come with 16-20 spokes. Lightweight wheels are synonymous with high-quality carbon wheelset. The production of carbon wheelset is considered a form of art because lightweight experts have mastered the art of engineering meticulously. The construction experts visualize and build carbon wheelset which is lightweight in construction has stability, stiffness and comfort thus establishing compatibility between rider, road bike and its wheelset. The marketing agents also offer single wheel like a spare wheel. Special features The carbon wheelset needs less energy to accelerate the rotating mass and at the same time is very stable. Thus, carbon wheelset is a combination of · Aerodynamics-this will minimize drag very much so will make a noticeable difference at higher speeds. · Crosswind resistance · Stiffness-greater than an aluminium wheelset · Handling · Weight lightness-the lightest carbon wheelset possesses tubular rims. This wheel will be particularly good for climbers. · Braking performance-good carbon wheels can transform the ride of a bike. The bike has a more responsive nature. · Speed- carbon wheelset provide a smoother ride even on rough road surfaces · Agility · Stylish-the bike looks sleek when rolling on a pair of deep-section carbon wheelset. Several bikers invest in these wheels solely because it looks good. However, the layout method involves lining the mould with sheets of carbon fibre for curing. This whole process is manually done leading to increase of time and cost of manufacturing. The spoke fabrication and weight distribution of the carbon wheelset ensures total curve precision. The carbon wheelset is less likely to twist and no watt is destroyed but it is converted into acceleration quickly. Laminated spokes More so with light carbon wheelset the spoking factor of specific significance. The spokes are unified into the carbon rim and the wheel stays practically stiff. The spokes can withstand a traction force and guarantee a high level of safety on day-to-day riding. The wheels should be used as specified and, in that case, will last a long time.
[Ladies' Week] Dara Torres - "Age is Just a Number"
So, @shannonl5 planned this awesome event, "Ladies' Week" (check out ~Announcing: Ladies' Week Event!~ just in case you haven't heard about it!). And in celebration of this awesome event, I wanted to start out with a female athlete that has inspired me: Dara Torres! Just in case you guys have never heard about Dara Torres, she is a former competitive swimmer who is also a twelve-time Olympic medalist and a former world record-holder in three events (50-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter freestyle relay, and 4x100-meter medley relay). But her medals and world records don't capture her whole story. There's more. Torres has competed in five different olympics: 1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, 2000 Sydney, and 2008 Beijing. That's right. Five different Olympics over the span of twenty-four years. She was 17 when she competed in her first ever Olympics and she took home a gold medal. She was 41 when she competed in her last one and took a silver medal home. Her life was definitely something you would not call perfect. She was already the oldest member on the U.S. swim team at the age of 33 during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She could not get pregnant at the age of 35. She was divorced twice by the age of 37. She had her first daughter at the age of 39. Her father also passed away that same year. But as Torres put it perfectly, "But when I was 41 and I woke up in a dorm in the Olympic Village in Beijing, I didn’t feel old. I felt merely—and, yes, happily—middle-aged. ‘The water doesn’t know how old you are.’" For her, age was just merely a number and her dedication and passion for swimming gave her the courage to try out for the 2008 Summer Olympics despite the personal barriers she faced. Torres wasn't quite finished though. After the 2008 Olympics, she underwent a knee surgery, but jumped back in the pool as soon as she was ready to swim once again. And she competed in the U.S. swimming trials to earn a spot on the 2012 London Olympics team for the 50-meter freestyle. She however was denied a spot. Jessica Hardy won first place with 24.50 seconds and Kara Lynn Joyce took the remaining spot. Dara was nine-hundredths of a second behind her sixth Olympics. She was 45 at the time. Even though she did not make it for the 2012 Olympics, she had no regrets, because she gave everything she had. She simply hugged her daughter, Tessa, and congratulated her fellow swimmers. [Video: 2008 Beijing Olympics Women's 4x100 Freestyle Relay Final/Torres's Last Olympic Medal] She has been such an inspiration for me and people all around the world. We sometimes put a limit on ourselves without even giving our best shot. Torres however never, ever made any excuses and simply focused on achieving her goals. I would like to end this card with my favorite Torres quote: "You don't have to put an age limit on your dreams."
