Is your New Year's resolution to shed a few pounds off this year? Well let me make your life easier. Weight loss can be so complex and utterly confusing because there is simply too much conflicting information out there. Here are six myths that will help you have an easier time shedding those pounds. 1. Myth: No Sweets Before Noon Research has found that participants who ate a 600-calorie, carb- and protein-rich breakfast that included dessert (such as ice cream or chocolate) lost more weight over four months than a group that ate a low-carb morning meal. Avoid calorie bombs like huge chocolate chip muffins, and opt for something like a milkshake with vanilla yogurt, peanut butter, and a little chocolate, or a banana muffin with almond butter. 2. Myth: Added Fiber Keeps You Full High-fiber foods (like fruits and veggies) take longer to digest and hold more water so they seem to fill you up and aid weight loss. The results of a study conducted by the University of Minnesota concluded that added fiber had no effect on fullness and caused more bloating than the low-fiber bars. To quell hunger, stick with foods naturally high in fiber instead of added fiber foods. Use whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. 3. Myth: Carbs Lead to Weight Gain According to a study published in April 2012, participants who ate a low-calorie diet high in whole wheat for 12 weeks lost more fat than a group that ate a low-calorie diet high in refined wheat. The whole grains are more filling and that likely participants to feel more full after eating whole wheat. Stick with the whole grain pasta. It may not taste the same as refined pasta, but at least you don't have to give it up all together. 4. Myth: You Should Only Use Zero-Calorie Sweeteners Sucralose, aspartame and stevia may be appealing choices for those who are looking to shed a pound or two. However, according to a joint study by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, the scientific evidence connecting zero-calorie sweeteners with long-term weight loss in inconclusive. You have to remember that overcompensation is a problem. Just because you skip a sugary soda at lunch doesn't mean that you can have extra at dinner. You will negate any calorie-saving benefit! 5. Myth: Add More Long Rides Cyclists are always talking about going on longer rides is always better, especially when it comes to weight loss. A study in 2012 had overweigh participants do 30 or 60 minutes of moderate exercise a day. Surprisingly, the participants who exercised less lost more weight during the 13-week study. Those who exercised longer ended up eating more throughout the day than the moderate-exercise group. In other words, the longer they exercised the more they overcompensated in food for it.
97% vs 3%
Society is divided up between two categories. There's the 97% and the 3%. The 97% are the average people. They work 9-5 jobs, focused too much on their education, don't think outside the box, and simply quit on themselves and their goals (if they had any significantly big ones). Yes, some people chose to be a part of that percentile and that's ok because it's their choice. They wanted it to be easy. But for those who complain about it have no right to. They may be thinking "I work 8 hours a day. I deserve better and should be living a better life." In reality they don't. They knew what they were getting themselves into and what the rest of their life would be like. They have made their choice a have given up on what could have been, for them, a life full of rewards and luxury. They decide to see the obvious instead of what's further ahead, and when they see the obvious, they hurt themselves more by looking at it through one perspective. These are the people who have simply said "I will do my part in society no matter the cost." Education plays a huge factor in your destiny. Some dream jobs do require an advanced education. When this is present, education is ok to take part in for it is needed to achieve a dream. For jobs that don't require education, you simply are spending $100,000 to people who will never know your name. The 3% of people in society are the people who put themselves away from society. They're the entrepreneurs in this world, the people loaded with confidence, they ignore what people say, etc. These people realized they have so much potential in their life and they take the opportunity even when it's not present. To be where they are they took the risks and sacrifices and understood what outcomes could come. Every penny they've ever made was put into what they believed in even if it was a dream or goal so big it scared them. Fear is not present in these people. They realized the only thing that could really stop them was fear therefore they learned to overcome it. No matter the criticism they received, negative comments they've been told, or even simply being told "you can't do it." 24 hours was not enough for them to get what they needed done so they would put in a full 24 hours of work. Now, depending on who they are and their stories, they could have had an easy start or challenging one. Some entrepreneurs were lucky enough to have a family member who already started the business or gave a startup of $1,000,000. But some start with nothing but a dollar and a vision. One feels much more rewarding than the other and causes them to have a bigger appreciation for what they have and have done. The 3% are always hungry no matter what they have. They will not stop until they have what they want. There are many quotes for these people but the quote posted best describes them. So now that you know a little about the two sides of society, which one will you choose? Are you happy with where you stand? Or do you want better? It's never too late to change or start. Stray Dog Spontaneously Joins 430-Mile Race
Right before a four-person Swedish team was scheduled to hike, kayak, and bike a grueling 430-mile endurance race through the Amazon rainforest, they sat down for a quick meal together. That's when teammate Mikael Lindnord noticed a tattered, miserable-looking stray dog. Feeling sympathy for the dog, he decided to give him one of his meatballs, figuring it would be the end of their exchange. The team must have made a fantastic impression on the stray because he continued to follow the adventure athletes as they made their way through mud and dangerous terrain. Even when they tried to get the loyal dog to stop for his own safety, he wouldn't listen and kept on going. During the kayaking portion of the race, their eager furry friend swam right beside them, prompting the team to invite him onto the kayak as their newest member. After all five of them crossed the finish line as the 12th top team in the world, the athletes decided to name the stray Arthur and to have him treated for a severe wound that had been on his back when they first met him. The team also worked out a way to bring their companion back home to Sweden with them, starting a Twitter campaign to raise the needed funds. Now, Arthur is living a happy, healthy life in Sweden with Lindnord, the man who shared the meatball that started it all. As if it couldn't get any better, the team has set up the Arthur Foundation, a charity organization for supporting stray dogs in need of a loving, caring home.
I'm Ashamed of My Hometown
San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.
6 Ways to Beat Your Sugar Habit
Sugar is essential whether you are out riding a bike, running, or working out. If provides us fuel and keeps us going. However, you don't need 23 teaspoons per day, which is how much sugar Americans consume on average. Consuming that amount of sugar is dangerous. It can lead to heart disease, hardened arteries, and many other adverse health conditions. Here are six great tips on beating your sugar addiction, written by Mike Rousell, Ph.D and author of The 6 Pillars of Nutrition. 1. Kick The Can Soda Soda is packed with added sugars. If you can't cut it out cold turkey then try this out. Replace regular soda with diet soda or a reduced calories/sugar-free version, it will reduce the sugar intake while still giving you a sugar fix. After a week of diet soda switch to seltzer water with a slice of citrus. Saves 10 tsp of sugar per day. 2. Sweeten Yogurt Naturally If you are a yogurt lover but you are trying to kick your sugar habit then here is some advice. Pre-made, fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts can sometimes contain up to 30 grams of sugar, much of it added. If you want a healthier snack, get plain sugar free yogurt and mix in some fruit like blueberries. Adding cinnamon can spice things up as well! Saves 2-4 tsp of sugar per day. 3. Snack on Whole Foods and Grains Cookies, candy bars, and even energy bars are not always healthy and usually packed with sugar. Instead, try to eat nuts, vegetables, and fiber-rich fruits (such as apples, pears and berries) or whole grains (even popcorn, plain of course). Saves 2-10 tsp of sugar per day. 4. Dilute Your Fruit Juice You may not know this, but fruit drinks account for about 10% of sugar in our diets. You can cut down drastically by adding equal amounts of water to your juice. This will effectively cut the sugars in half and soon you'll realize that normal juice is WAY too sweet! Saves 2-3 tsp of sugar per day. 5. Swap Out Your Cereal Cereal is notoriously filled with sugars. Put the Frosted Flakes and Fruit Loops back on the shelf, and go for steel-cut oats. You can stir in half a scoop of vanilla protein powder for a sweetness kick and you'll be adding about 10 grams of protein to your diet! Saves 2-4 tsp of sugar per day. 6. Pick Your Own Dessert You may love your chocolate cake or donuts, but they are really packed with sugars. Grilled fruit makes a fantastic desert. It will provide sweetness with a healthy does of fiber on top. Some great grilled fruit is peaches, grapefruit, and watermelon. Saves 2-10 tsp of sugar per day.
