What Did You Think of Okja?

I finally had the time to watch Okja this weekend and I am so glad I did!

If you didn't see any info about it you can read my card --> here!
Basic summary: A food corporation is breeding a new kind of pig, they gave 26 of them to farmers around the world and made a competition of who could raise the biggest pig. Okja is one of the pigs, and has become part of the family in her Korean home. When she's taken away - her little girl will stop at nothing to get her back!

First off, I was surprised by how fast it went. The 2 hours totally flew by! I also loved how they played with Korean, and since I was able to understand it it made it even funnier. Like when the leader of the ALF was like "40 long years ago we founded this great blahbalhabalahbal...." and Steve Yeun's character was just like "매날" hahahah

I did like it, but I have one tiny issue with it...

Lucy Mirando's character:

She was totally manic. She was an absolute nut which made her so fun to watch. The problem is though, that it makes her character, her company, and what that corporation is doing, seem like an exaggeration.

It really isn't :/

The horrible conditions, violent "forced mating" aka rape, and unnecessary pain is totally normal in the food industry.

Now yes, there are local farmers that still treat their animals with dignity, and I don't think Okja was anti-meat. I think Okja is talking about the HUGE corporations that are doing pretty horrible things to our food. From using totally unsustainable ways of farming to putting animals in completely unnecessary conditions (like I said, I know there are farmers that raise animals in a sustainable way - not talking about those people!!)

I hope Okja opened a lot of eyes, but I also hope people won't write the Mirando Corp off as an exaggeration because, as scary as it is, that is so SO close to reality.

What did you think!?

It made me so happy I'm learning korean language when I kept noticing their accents and even when I realised each time their spell Okja/Okta/Ogta in in a different way. it made me realise things. The translation jokes were just perfect. The end was too hard and I even considered get back with being vegetarian. But then I love it bc it's so damn true!
it also has Steven Yuen in it!!!!!❤❤❤❤ A.K.A- Glenn from the walking dead!
i LOVED this movie because it makes you think twice about your food choices and also because it's one of the few movies out there that actually made me cry!😢😄😁❤
It was cute in a weird way!! I actually enjoyed it, maybe bc Steven Oppa was in it, but yas. A must watch for sure...i thibk
I think the only reason Lucy's character seemed like an exaggeration is because she wasn't like her sister. She tried to make it seem like she was really doing good. Her sister on the other hand was one of the most real characters I've ever seen, treating the animals as property so being confident in her legal abilities and having no sympathy (capitalism and food industry prime example) and in the end money is what won Okja back home. The movie was brilliant. I think anyone that thinks it's just some fantasy film is sadly deluding themselves. I cried buckets at the end because *** SPOILER *** Most of those super pigs really do die, in fact the production goes on. ***SPOILER OVER*** The movie made me seriously consider becoming a vegetarian. Objectively, the movie itself is so well done. It has a surreal feel, while still bringing to light cruel truths, an amazing and amusingly mixed up cast and wonderful CGI for the super pigs! The plot is well driven, it has well placed humor, and is believable all the way through. It's a movie I'll be recommending to everyone I know.
@TheEnlightment true but i also think a LOT of companies try to make it look like they're doing good when they really arent :/ Like think of H&M with their RED campaign to raise money for AIDS research and all this stuff but meanwhile their clothes are all made in sweatshops where children are being paid nothing to work in horrible conditions. That's why i think okja was so great - it wasnt just about food but about massive corporation in general. and what nancy (sister) said was right - if its cheap enough, people will buy it, it doesn't matter the horrible things that had to happen for it to hit the shelves.
and yes im TOTALLY recommending it to everyone!

Top 10 Best Atheist Movies (Must Watch)
For millennials, art was inseparable from religion. Religion completely dominated culture, so aspiring Expressionists could only draw inspiration from approved doctrine. In Christianity, it was blasphemous to create something that was not already in the Bible, and in Islam, it was blasphemy to create... well... It does not matter that. Of course, such restrictions do make wonderful art, from the Sistine Chapel to Ben-Hur, and even Islam has established its own art by finding sophisticated solutions to Sharia law, such as calligraphic interpretations of scriptures. Nonetheless, the scope and beauty of theistic art are undeniable, but atheistic art is not without representation either. However as of late acknowledged into mainstream society, skeptic films exist and are among film's outperforms. We're discussing films that harbor topics of unbelief or stories that cultivate strict uncertainty.  They possess a lot more modest artistic specialty than those strictly propelled, yet just by virtue of their earliest stages. It's mind-boggling how as of late atheism was vilified in western culture, and this ill will in any case stays in a significant part of the world. To believe that the basic affirmation of the nonexistence of something apparently nonexistent is a conviction framework worth censuring is absurd. Atheism is as much a conviction as religion is proof. It's not reasonable to call them alternate extremes. The following movies are made for the people who do not believe, but the believer can still draw something of value from the wide-raging and well-executed themes. They’re not just lightning rods of disagreement, but objectively good films that would not look amiss on any other list. Korean Movie Club: Silenced
Trigger warning: Physical and sexual abuse of minors. The plot: Kang In-ho (Gong Yoo) is a new art teacher at Benevolence Academy, a deaf school for children (Based on the real-life Gwangju Inhwa School). He's excited to teach his new students, but they all seem afraid of him and even scared. In-ho does not give up, and eventually the students start to open up to him - and tell him horrifying things. The children are being physically and sexually abused by their teachers. When he decides to fight for the children’s rights and expose the crimes being committed at the school, he soon realizes the school’s principal and teachers, and even the police, prosecutors and churches in the community are actually trying to cover up the truth According to its summary: It is based on actual events that took place at Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired, where young deaf students were the victims of repeated sexual assaults by faculty members over a period of five years in the early 2000s The aftermath: The film looks at both the crimes, as well as the legal battle that followed. It showed the true story that the teachers who ABUSED THEIR STUDENTS were let off with minimal punishment. The nation was pissed. After its release, there was so much outrage from the citizens who watched the film, that the investigations were reopened. The demand for legislative reform reached all the way to the National Assembly, where a revised bill, dubbed the Dogani Bill, was passed in late October 2011 to abolish the limitations for sex crimes against minors and the disabled. I haven't seen it yet and will need to be emotionally ready, but I do want to see a film that sparked such a big change in Korea! You can watch it here on Dramanice. Is anyone else interested or has seen it before?

'Train to Busan' as Critique of Korean Society
I still haven't been able to see Train to Busan for myself, but I found this article on NPR to be really interesting! It doesn't ruin any plot points (other than the fact that there is a zombie apocalypse which I'm pretty sure we could gather from the trailer...) According to the article: Without giving too much of the story away, the film blames corporate callousness for the death toll. The government covers up the truth — or is largely absent. And the crew? Rather than rescue passengers, it follows the wishes of a businessman. Sewol Ferry Reference: These themes are particularly resonant in South Korea, which in 2014 faced national tragedy after 300 people, mostly teenagers, died when a ferry overturned in the sea. Investigators found the ferry's corporate owners overloaded it to save money. And the captain and crew got into lifeboats without rescuing passengers. News media, toeing the government line, originally reported that everyone survived, blamed rescuers for not working hard enough (when in reality the government refused to let them go into the water and rescue the children), etc. The Korean president's whereabouts on that day are still unexplained. Then the MERS Outbreak: Last year, as Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, spread in South Korea, the government wouldn't share key information about where patients were being treated, where it started, and how officials would contain the outbreak. The government refused to communicate with the public, so the Seoul mayor had to go against the president and form his OWN plan to fix the problem. As a result, he's now in the running for next president (since Koreans have lost all respect or trust in the current pres) You can read the full piece by NPR right HERE. Has anyone seen this yet?!
