Swedish former Olympic diver Jimmy Sjödin, and his German boyfriend, Patrick Huber, just got engaged in Venice, Italy, and the photos are making the internet go wild!

Patrick wouldn’t tell Jimmy where they were going when they left their Munich home by car. They eventually reached Venice, Italy, a place Jimmy had always wanted to visit, where Patrick had arranged for a travel photographer to take secret snaps of their sweet adventure.

When the pair set off on a romantic gondola ride, Patrick knew the time was right, and popped the question.

“I had no idea or clue that this could or would be an engagement trip,” Jimmy told the Huffington Post about the shocking moment.

The happy couple is set to marry in the German Alps on May 28, 2018, which will mark two years to the day they began dating.

'선량한 차별주의자' / 김지혜 저 (지극히 주관적인 저의 생각을 쓴 글입니다.) 예전에 인종차별에 관한 발표를 한 적이 있었다. 그 당시 여러 가지 자료를 찾아보면서 많은 걸 느꼈다. 그때 내가 발표했던 내용의 중점은 적극적인 차별이 아닌 소극적 차별, 본인이 인식하지 못하는 영역의 차별에 대한 것이었다. 우리나라에 사는 외국인, 특히 다문화 가정의 아이들이 누군가 지하철에서 자신들을 쳐다보는 것만으로 움츠러들고 차별받는다고 느끼게 된다는 기사를 보고 충격을 받아 그런 내용으로 구성했던 것으로 기억한다. 잊고 있던 그때의 기억이 이 책을 읽으면서 다시 한번 떠올랐다. 선량한 차별주의자. 언뜻 보기에 말이 안 되는 단어 같다. 선량한 사람이 어떻게 차별주의자가 될 수 있지?라는 의문을 불러일으킨다. 하지만 이 책에서는 적극적인 차별이 아닌 대다수의 선량한 사람들이 스스로 인식하지 못하고 타인에게 가하는 차별들에 대해 이야기한다. 아무리 선량한 사람이더라도 어떤 말이, 어떤 행동이, 어떤 시선이 차별받는다는 생각을 다른 사람에게 불러일으킬 수 있다는 것을 모른다면 자신도 모르는 새 선량한 차별주의자가 된다고 이 책은 말한다. 저자는 이 책을 쓰게 된 계기가 결정장애라는 말 때문이었다고 한다. 혐오표현에 관한 토론회에서 결정장애라는 말을 쓴 저자는 누군가에게 이런 질문을 들었다. "그런데 왜 결정장애라는 말을 쓰셨어요?" 그 한마디로 저자는 이 결정장애라는 말이 장애인들에게 어떻게 들릴지에 대한 생각이 부족했던 자신의 잘못을 바로 시인하고 사과한 후 이 책을 집필하기 시작했다고 한다. 이와 같이 우리가 흔히 사용하는 단어들에 수많은 차별이 숨어 있다. 결정장애는 물론이고 여성스러운 옷을 입은 남자에게 하는 게이 같다는 말이나 급식충, 맘충 등의 혐오표현은 물론이고 흑형, 백형과 같은 말도 마찬가지다. 혐오의 의미로 쓰는 표현이 아닐지라도 그 말을 듣는 사람에게는 차별로 느껴질 수 있는 것이다. 이렇듯 이 책에서는 전혀 그럴 의도가 아니었을지라도, 차별에 반대하는 어떤 선량한 사람이라도 무지로 인한 차별적 언행을 일삼을 수 있다는 것을 계속해서 이야기한다. 그래서 우리는 차별에 대해 계속 공부해야 하고 알아가야 한다고, 선량한 차별주의자가 되지 않기 위해 자신과 다른 계층에 대한 이해가 필요하다고 말한다. 이 책의 좋은 점은 우리가 인지하지 못하고 있던 수많은 인식 밖의, 소극적 차별 들에 대해 낱낱이 드러낸다는 것이다. 성별, 인종, 성적 취향, 재산, 사회적 명예, 나이 등 수많은 조건들에 대해 다른 계층의 사람들, 상대적으로 약자에 속하는 계층의 사람들이 기득권층에게는 전혀 차별 같아 보이지 않는 것들에 대해 어떻게 열등감을 느끼고 차별로 받아들이는지를 서술한다.(실제로 많이 찔리기도 했다.) 놀랄 정도로 우리 사회의 많은 부분에 차별이 산재해있고 우리는 알게 모르게 차별을 받고 또 하면서 살아가고 있다는 것을 이 책을 통해 알 수 있다. 좁은 의미의 적극적인 차별(KKK 단, 동성애를 반대하는 종교 집단)이 아닌 우리가 잘 알지 못하는 넓은 범위의 차별에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 주는 책이다. 하지만 아쉬운 점이 없지는 않다. 첫째는 차별을 해결하기 위해 우리가 논의해야 할 방안에 대한 구체적 논의가 조금 부족하다. 책에서는 종교 집단의 퀴어 축제에 대한 반대 운동, 여성의 직종 및 노동 대가에 대한 차별을 이야기하면서 퀴어 축제를 허가해야 하고, 여성의 수가 절대적으로 부족한 직종에 대해 여성 할당제를 시도해야 한다는 뉘앙스의 이야기를 하는데 필자는 그 부분에 대해 아주 조심스러운 대처가 필요하다고 생각한다.  필자는 동성애를 반대하지 않는다. 성적 취향이란 것은 누가 반대하고 찬성할 수 있는 것이 아니다. 그저 자신의 취향 문제일 뿐이지 남자가 남자를 사랑하는 것, 여자가 여자를 사랑하는 것이 도대체 왜 문제인지 모르겠다. 하지만 개인적으로 현재 우리나라에서 벌어지고 있는 퀴어 축제 현장에 대해서는 솔직히 찬성할 마음은 들지 않는다. 오히려 지금의 퀴어 축제가 동성애자에 대한 사람들의 스테레오 타입을 강화시키고 있는 것이 아닌가 생각한다. 퀴어축제 참가자들의 복장을 보면 거의 비키니에 가까운 복장이나 아예 속옷만 입고 돌아다니기도 하고 SM 플레이에 나올 법한 복장을 입기도 한다. 또한 간식들도 여성이나 남성의 성기 모양 과자나 빵 등을 구워서 팔기도 한다. 도대체 왜 퀴어 축제는 그런 방식으로 진행이 되어야만 하는가? 평범한 동성애자들은 평소에도 그렇게 노출이 심한 복식을 즐겨 입고 집에서 남성기, 여성기 모양의 간식을 만들어서 먹는가? 동성애자 중에도 노출을 좋아하는 사람이 있고 아닌 사람이 있으며 트랜스젠더 중에서도 남자지만 여성의 복식을, 여자지만 남성의 복식을 입는 사람도 있고 중성적인 의상을 선호하는 사람도 있을 것이다. 지금 우리나라에서 벌어지는 퀴어축제를 보면 전자의 경우가 대다수를 차지하는 것 같다는 느낌을 받는데 그런 것들이 동성애자, 트랜스젠더들에 대한 고정관념을 계속 강화시키는 것이 아닌가 생각한다.(필자는 과거 LA에서 한 번, 한국에서 한 번 퀴어 축제에 가 본 적이 있고 몇 년 전의 축제이기에 현재는 다를 수도 있을 것이다.) 필자는 퀴어 축제가 아니라 이성 연인 혹은 모든 커플들의 사랑을 주제로 한 축제더라도 사람이 가득 붐비는 축제 거리에서 비키니를 입고 돌아다니거나 속옷을 입고 돌아다니는 사람들, SM플레이를 연상시키는 복장을 한 사람들이 주목을 받고 주류가 되는 축제, 남성기나 여성기 모양을 한 간식들을 파는 축제에는 가고 싶지 않다. 그런 면에서 현재의 퀴어 축제가 과연 모든 LGBT들을 대표할만한 축제인가에 대해 고민이 필요하다고 생각한다. 이번에는 여성 할당제에 대해 생각해보자. 필자는 여성 할당제가 남녀 간 직종의 차이, 노동 대가의 차이를 줄이는 데 도움이 될 수 있다고 생각한다. 하지만 그 적용에 대해서는 아주 조심스러운 접근이 필요하다고 생각한다. 무작정 남성 비율이 높은 모든 직업에 여성할당제를 적용한다면 그로 인해 그 직업들을 가지게 된 여성들의 자격 문제가 불거질 수도 있다. 근무하기 위한 객관적인 최소 기준을 측정할 수 있는 직업, 예를 들어 의사나 변호사처럼 시험을 봐서 점수를 매길 수 있는 직업들의 경우 그 최소 기준을 만족시키는 범위 안에서 여성할당제를 적용하면 문제가 없겠지만 그러한 객관적 최소 기준을 정할 수 없는 직업들의 경우 문제가 된다. 국가의 공인된 시험, 혹은 자격 검증 절차 같은 것이 객관적으로 존재하기 힘든 직업들의 경우 무조건 여성을 절반 이상 뽑아야 한다는 조건이 있으면 그중에서 업무를 수행할 수 있는 능력이 부족한 사람들이 생길 수 있다. 그런 경우를 고려하여 어떻게 여성의 최소 비율을 할당하면서도 그 안에서 업무 수행 능력이 부족한 사람이 생기지 않도록 만들 수 있을지에 대한 많은 논의와 고려가 필요하다고 생각한다. 이 책에 대해 아쉬운 점 두 번째는 너무 모든 것을 차별로 설명하려고 하는 것 같은 느낌이 있다는 부분이다. 예멘 난민의 수용 문제에 대해서 저자는 우리가 무비자 입국을 막은 것이 과연 차별이 아니라고 말할 수 있는가라는 이야기를 하는데 그 점에 있어서는 분명 차별로 인한 부분도 존재할 것이다. 하지만 국가라는 것은 애초에 어떤 지역 안에 사는 사람들이 자신들의 이권을 지키고 다른 집단으로부터 불공정한 피해를 받지 않기 위해 만든 것이다. 국가라는 것은 언제나 그 나라 국민들의 입장을 가장 먼저 생각할 수밖에 없고 예멘 난민을 받아들이는 것이 인도적 차원에서는 맞는 일이더라도 국민들에게 해를 입힐 가능성이 있다면 그것을 제재하는 것 또한 국가의 일인 것이다. 우리나라가 사이가 좋은 국가가 있고 나쁜 국가가 있다. 어떤 나라에게는 무비자 입국을 허용하고 어떤 나라에게는 무비자 입국을 허용하지 않는다. 그렇다면 그것도 차별 때문일까? 국가 간의 이권 다툼, 영토 문제, 외교 정책 등 많은 것들이 개입된 문제이고 그 속에 차별도 존재한다고 말하는 것이 옳을 것이다. 하지만 이 책에서는 차별이 이 모든 문제의 원인인 것처럼 이야기하는데 만약 그것이 진실이라면 그 차별을 없앨 해결 방법은 국가라는 것을 없애고 전 지구를 하나의 통합된 집단으로 만드는 것 밖에 없지 않을까. 차별이란 과거에도, 지금도, 미래에도 존재할 것이다. 인간이 존재하는 한 영원히. 하지만 그것에 대해 계속해서 고민하고 생각하고 공부하는 것만이 우리가 더 인간다워질 수 있는 방법이라는 것을 이 책을 통해서 알 수 있었다. 책 속 한 문장 : 생각해보면 차별은 거의 언제나 그렇다. 차별을 당하는 사람은 있는데 차별을 한다는 사람은 잘 보이지 않는다.
