Finally got to check it out, and I have mixed feelings about it.
Obviously, as someone who's watched the anime and in the process of reading the manga, it's complete trash unless you view it as a joke. Then again, I don't think you could possibly stuff Death Note into a feature length production and satisfy that audience, unless you made a series of movies. I felt they changed so much context (and content/ plot, really... I knew it was gonna be different, but damn...) that it was barely recognizable.
Doing my best to judge it with fresh eyes and an open mind, by it's own merit and not source material, not bad. I mean, parts of it were comically bad (that scene you mentioned😂), but other parts were still twisty and interesting. Would I watch it again? Probably not, but I must say I was not unentertained!
I have to say, my sister changed it, so I didn't get to see if there was a post-credit scene showing what L did with that page or something, but I could see them leaving it open ended, so a non-otaku audience could believe the main character survived and got his happy(ish) ending, and us anime fans could believe that Light died like he's supposed to, but I'll have to check on that... Sorry about my long-winded rambling!
