The Internet is Pissed At EA and It's Getting Ugly
EA Games is in deep shit, and Reddit is adding fuel to the fire. EA announced their newest game, Star Wars Battlefront 2, which will probably be rad except for the fact that you'll have to spend A TON OF TIME AND MONEY just to play your favorite character. According to Gizmodo + Reddit: Many of the franchise’s most memorable characters wouldn’t be playable in the game from the get-go. To unlock them, players will need to spend in-game currency earned from hours of play. In the case of Darth Vader, the price tag is 60,000 credits, which requires around a 40-hour investment, according to player estimates. (Spending real-world money, which cannot be directly converted to credits, provides only a “round-about way” of unlocking the characters.) Understandably, users are pissed especially since they're already paying for the game - now they have to pay more just to be Vader? Now this would have just brewed quietly if it weren't for EA Games' comment on Reddit: Which is not the most hated comment on reddit of all time. "The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes. As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay. We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can." It is now reaching 400k downvotes and seems to have broken the downvote counter. It's a horrible mesh of starwars/videogame fans being extra vocal and EA's sort of lame response. As of now, EA Games announced they'd be decreasing the cost/time to unlock characters by 75%.
South Park Handles Racism Brilliantly.
You might not agree with how they address it, but you have to admit it is brilliant. (for the image above, the answer is naggers, people who nag or annoy you. obviously) South Park is a show that has caused huge controversy many, many times, and with the release of their new game "Fractured But Whole" they took their dialogue about racism to an entirely new level. The comedy RPG (role player game) features various levels of difficulty, from easy to very difficult, much like most games. What's different though is the difficulty affects the color of your character's skin. During the character creation section of the game, which you can see in the video below (skip to 5:40), you select the difficulty of the game. What's interesting is the easier the difficulty, the lighter your character's skin, the harder the difficulty, the darker your character's skin. It means if you want to play The Fractured but Whole on a harder than normal difficulty, you have to play as a person of colour. Now for those of you who at this point are thinking that the game creators are racists - wait. During the process, you're told "Don't worry, this doesn't affect combat. Just every other aspect of your whole life." When asked about this feature, Ubisoft developers told the difficulty of the game affects the amount of money you receive and the way other characters speak to you throughout the course of the game - nothing else, you have the same skills as everyone. The only thing that changes is how society views you. It is, quite clearly, a social commentary on racism in modern society, and as far as video games go, a pretty effective one. There is always going to be a white guy saying that he's not priviledged because he's never experienced what its like to be prematurely judged based on skin tone - so this video game will do it for them. For any POC that feels offended by this, okay, I can see where you're coming from, but for me I think it teaches an important lesson that no matter how skilled you are, how smart you are, whatever, your will always have to fight a little bit harder when your skin is darker. Personally, I'd love it if my white friends understood that more and I think this is a rad way to get that feeling through their heads. What do you think of this? Do you agree, or think its racist as hell?
