Doctors can personify the voices heard by people with schizophrenia. Instead of tormenting patients, the avatars get nicer over time, and in some cases totally relieve auditory hallucinations.

Schizophrenia:

a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior and failure to understand what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, hearing voices that others do not hear, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and a lack of motivation.

About 65% of patients with schizophrenia experience verbal auditory hallucinations, typically in the form of voices that emanate from perceived “others,” who tend to fit the same unsavory profile – they're domineering, derogatory and unremittingly hostile. (source) They tell them to do violent things, they cause them to lose control.

But in a test in 2009-2011, there was a breakthrough in dealing with these violent voices. Giving the voices a face.

The therapy allowed patients to create an avatar, or visual representation of the source of their perceived auditory hallucinations, known as the “persecutor,” whose speech closely matched the pitch and tone of the persecutory voice in their heads. Patients were then encouraged to engage in a dialogue with the avatar, who was controlled by a therapist.

The results of the therapy were astounding, with some patients finding their hallucinations completely vanishing.

Of course, there were some that did not have any change, but with the second round of testing an even higher percentage of patients found that their hallucinations lessened.

According to the study’s lead author Tom K J Craig, PhD, FRCP, emeritus professor of social psychiatry at King’s College London, “The operation of power within this relationship is viewed as crucial…the voice-hearer assum[es] a submissive role characterized by feelings of inferiority and powerlessness that can reflect social relationships more generally,” researchers wrote. “The therapist (switching between speaking as therapist and as avatar) facilitates a dialogue in which the voice-hearer gradually gains increased power and control within the relationship, with the initially omnipotent voice loosening its grip over the hearer by becoming more conciliatory over time."

Basically, they made the avatar be nicer overtime and gave the patient the feeling of having control over it.

Ninja Art; Killer Kicks 101
In the image I have provided you can see the proper form of a classic round house kick. To start simply raise your knee up to your torso. As you kick twist your hips and unleash your attack. Be certain to have enough control not to pass the center of your body. It is important to bring your leg back in and return to your original stance after this or any other kick. This insures a safe finish in case you miss. A side kick is simallar to the round house. First start by raising your knee to your torso and then twist 90 degrees lifting your foot up to your knee. Stike using the ball of your foot then return to the twisted raised knee position. Twist back into the standard raised knee position and then return to your standard position. Next is the standard front kick. Like with the round house lift your knee to your torso then perform your kick. Try and hit with the ball of your foot. Once you have completed the kick bring your leg in and return to your stance. A crescent kick is much like the front kick and is useful for disarming opponents or surprising them. Bring up your knee and arc your kick either inward or outward depending on the situation. After completing the kick you should be in the standing position with your knee raised to your torso. From this you can kick again or return to your stance. The windmil kick is a little more difficult and less likely to see combat for beginers. Using your front foot twist around raising the other knee. As you return to facing your opponent unleash your kick. Do not cross over the center of your body. Once completed return to the position of one raised knee and then again to the starting position. Finally we have reached the back kick. Raise your knee as you would for any other kick and then begin to crouch forward. Unlease your kick while maintaining your balance. Then return to your starting stance. As you practice these kicks always start by lifting the attacking leg into the raised knee position. From there try to mix it up, you may need to change a kick in an instant so it makes for good practice. Also practice spinning 90 degrees from that stance to change directions. It seems silly but comes in handy and can be a real game changer.
Japan's New Temporary Tattoos Detect A Common Food Allergy.
Food allergies are no joke. As many of you might know, being allergic to foods like nuts, eggs, and wheat flour can cause a range of extremely dangerous symptoms, ranging from itching and nausea to even painful swelling of the throat and airways. Japan has been taking a pretty impressive proactive stance for early allergy detection - and the method they've employed to get the job done might really surprise you! These 'ukiyo-e'-inspired temporary tattoos have been specially created to indicate whether or not the wearer is allergic to soba. Soba, a staple noodle popularly enjoyed in the country, is made from buckwheat, the top food-related allergen among children in East Asia - with the strongest reactions resulting in anaphylactic shock. If the wearer is not allergic, the tattoo will remain a black-and-white design. If the wearer has an allergy, sudden red detailing will appear. And, differently from a traditional allergy test, this indication does not result in burning or itching skin. The tattoos are currently being used by the 230 Soba Street Promotion Association, a Hokkaido-based group of soba noodle restaurateurs along the region's popular foodie destination, Route 230. They hope that this kind of technology will catch on and encourage similar products to be made for other common food allergies. Would you rock one of these tattoos?
