The KPop Diet Issue
The Kpop industry is not only an industry of talent and singing, but an industry that is also hyper focused on the image and "beauty" of the idols that they "produce". Miss A's Suzy, Wonder Girls' Yubin, Wonder Girl's Hyelim, Apink's Eunji, Secret's Hyosung, F(x)'s Luna all underwent drastic weight loss transformations in order to maintain the public image of "beauty". Of course these few artists do not even start to represent the issue that is in the Kpop Industry. Twice's Jihyo was bluntly told by JYP that she had to lose weight and that was her flaw. After debuting she also received a lot of hate for her weight and promptly lost a lot shutting up her haters but also instigating complaints from fans saying that she was beautiful the way she was, which I agree with. Many artists have followed unhealthy diets, literally starving themselves in order to achieve the figure required of them by their company and by the image the kpop industry sets up for them. These examples are not limited to these artists but these are just some examples of people who have done these. Sistar's Soyou ate only one meal a day, IU ate one apple, one sweet potato and one protein shake a day, After School's UEE eats only 1000kcals a day (that's half the recommended daily calorie intake!), 2AM's Changmin ate 2 blocks of tofu and ran for 6 hours everyday, Sistar's Dasom ate only cucumbers for 3 weeks, Park Boram is probably one of the more extreme examples of the chaos the kpop industry produces in the minds of young and growing people. She participated in Super Star K2 at the age of 18 and placed in the top 8! Afterwards, though, she eventually lost 70 pounds in order to debut! While this may have taken place over the course of 4 years that is a ridiculous amount of weight to lose! She released an album last year called "Celepretty" revealing her completely changed figure. But the Kpop industry is changing, a bit too slowly, but it's changing. Korea's first plus-sized model, Vivian Geeyang Kim, shared her thoughts about not fitting the "ideal Korean image" in an interview with Koreaboo's partner OOgeeWoogee. I did not mean to exclude anyone and this is also an issue in many nations, the issue of an image that isn't possible by healthy means.
