What is Valyrian Steel-
Sailing through the smoking sea all the way to the forbidden city of Valyria, a city known for magic, dragons, and the impenetrable Valyrian steel. Sounds familiar? Well, any Game of Thrones buff would surely understand the notion in a heartbeat! This is not the first time we have fantasized about charmed metals. Marvel is filled with similar concepts, right from Captain America’s Vibranium shield to Wolverine’s Adamantium claws, we have all types of stuff.
In this case, Valyrian steel is a stronger, lighter, and sharper than any form of metal. It is believed that it has magical powers and was forged by casting enchantments in dragon fire. Though, the Doom of Valyria chastised the city and destroyed its magic, dragons, people, and the secret to this godly metal. Only a handful of these swords remain, with each great house having one. Some of the well-known Valyrian steel swords are Longclaw, Widow’s Wail, Oath keeper, Ice, Heartsbane and more. These swords are so expensive that one could buy a castle with it.
Similarities to Carbon Steel
The characteristics of Valyrian steel resemble that of the modern carbon steel. The fantasy metal’s appearance is marked by a unique pattern exhibiting the razor-shape blade’s surface. The modern carbon steel forgings have a similar rippling pattern. This appearance is marked by the high heating and the presence of additional elements like manganese. We all know a writer takes inspiration from the world around him, maybe Mr. Martin incorporate the elements of a certain real-world metal into his fantasy world.
The possibility of the fact that our predecessors have so much time at hand, they could have easily developed a metal which is ahead of its time. Scientific intellect was not that advanced then, hence they might be convinced with the idea of magic. Compared to the current traits of the carbon steel the Valyrian steel would fit the mold perfectly. Probably the people of Valyria were innovators and scientists who devised knowledge and inventions which was lost during the doom before it could be discharged to the rest of the world.

Its an amalgamation of iron-based metal, manganese, and other elements. The metal is malleable and can either be cast or beaten to a certain shape with molds and tools. The carbon steel is offered in 3 different proportions building three new categories of carbon steel. Low Carbon or Mild steels which have up to 0.3% carbon, medium carbon steel with 0.3 to 0.6% carbon, and the high carbon steel with more than 0.6% of carbon content.
Carbon steel has clearly become the ideal metal for blacksmithing due to its unrivaled properties. You could surely have killed some White Walkers if they were real.
