I’m gonna start this article off with some opinion, please be understanding. I’m sick of CGI animal characters. We’ve had the Chipmunks, Woody Woodpecker, Underdog, G-Force, Yogi Bear and even Detective Pikachu. But wait.. There’s more; Sonic’s getting a movie also. Set for release this November (November 8th 2019), the story is much like an origin story. But.. Is it like another origin story we know? I theorize that it is a lot like Alvin and The Chipmunks.
“Juvenile delinquent Sonic the Hedgehog and local policeman Tom Wachowski must stop Dr. Eggman from completing his plans for world domination.”~Google
This description is the plot of the new Sonic movie according to Google, the following is IMDB’s description:
A cop in the rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking to capture him~ IMDB
It is a pretty straightforward story about a hedgehog that helps out a policeman in stopping a super villain from world domination. How in any way could this relate to the plot of Alvin and The Chipmunks? Let us explore this theory further and compare our findings.
“Three musical chipmunks are discovered by an aspiring songwriter who wants to become famous by using their amazing singing abilities.”~IMDB
That was the description of the first Alvin and The Chipmunks film from 2007. So, let us compare. A live human being finds a CGI animal character(s) and together they do something incredible. In Alvin and The Chipmunks it’s an aspiring song writer that wants to be famous (based on the series of Alvin and The Chipmunks), in Sonic 2019 it’s a cop (one can only assume he’s not very popular).
Almost as if the studios producing these films have one basic film script that people take and copy many times; replacing only basic elements like names and locations. Characters change too, in very small ways.
I’ve been an avid fan boy in the entertainment Multiverse for quite some time now. I have a knack for pulling apart plots with very little publicly shared information. In this case, it seems that a cop will have a hard time proving himself and bump into the hedgehog Sonic who helps him do just that, and together they save the day. Oh, did I mention that Dr. Robotnik will be played by Jim Carrey..
Let’s take a moment to remember the painful experience that was the original Super Mario Bros Movie. Video game movie adaptations don’t exactly have the best track record for being decent films. And CGI animal films always tend to try and appeal too much to the younger viewers. Well, with Detective Pikachu, I can’t be certain what audience they’re trying to attract. But one thing is for certain, these films featuring semi-realistic CGI creatures aren’t most anyone’s favorite.
To be fair, the casting of Sonic’s voice wasn’t too poor a choice. Looks like the casting director got the voice of LEO from Rise of the TMNT (arguably a good version of the Turtles): Ben Schwartz. I could hear his voice coming out of Sonic the Hedgehog and not be so angry that I want to walk out of the theater. But I probably won’t see this movie even when it comes out on DVD and Bluray.
Sonic is fleeing government capture. Much like the Chipmunks fleeing enslavement to the music industry in their film. Sonic befriends a human that’s not doing so well in his profession (assumption through observation), The Chipmunks befriend a human who’s not doing so well in his career. Similarities can be found in all CGI animal films. Not saying this movie will be a total flop, but chances are it won’t be what Sonic fans are wanting, and will further mess with the minds of our future generations as to what iconic characters are.
Some change to stay fresh and new is acceptable, but Sonic has changed quite a lot over the years. Consistency doesn’t appear to be his strong suit. Now he looks like a small human in a furry suit. At one point he was tall with fighters’ tape wrapped around his hands and ankles.
This film overall seems very comparable to Alvin and The Chipmunks. Things unfold so plainly that it’s practically obvious how the story will be told. I find it sad that such an icon is treated in a manner as this. With Sonic’s level of historic relevance he should indeed receive a greater story than escaping the government and helping a human cop defeat his worst foe. Truly, Sonic should be able to do more on his own. I believe that the magic of 2D animation is lost on these Hollywood types that see a film coming out which they could rival, such as Detective Pikachu. Such a shame really. Well, this is my view on the whole ordeal of Sonic’s new film. But, to each their own. What’s your opinion or perspective. Feel free to comment and tell me about it. I’m curious as to what you think.
