Who knows that person may not even be your type or even on your radar at all. Take a break, let someone approach you instead of you approaching them. -or- Hwang Haein has a habit of falling in love with assholes. Will that ever change? ---- ---- Story Cover: Two weeks later Yanan stood in my room pacing back in forth in front of three different outfits I had chosen to wear to a party tonight. Apparently Changgu was going to be there so I talked Yanan into going with me. "Yanan just choose one already!" I whine, he's spent ten minutes looking at each of them. He huffs, fingers running through his hair, his natural black was starting to show again now that it's been a couple of weeks. "Uh, that one." He points to the black dress on the end. I sigh relieved, it was the most conservative of the three. Though it still came off the shoulders and was a tad bit shorter than I was used to. I grab the dress moving to my bathroom to put it on. I can't help but cringe at how high the dress was cut, so I bend over in the mirror and sure enough my ass is hanging out. Dammit, so no bending over tonight. I do my makeup a little darker than usual since it was a black dress and straighten my hair a little straighter. Once I'm done, I step out into my room, Yanan immediately puts his phone down. "Wow." Is all he says, his mouth wide open. "Is that a good wow? Or?" I laugh towards him moving to grab a jacket. He quickly sits up. "Of course, it is." "Good if you said no, I might've kicked your ass." I stick my tongue out at him. He stands up and scratches at the back of his head. "Do we have to go tonight?" His lower lip pouts out as he whines. "Uh, yeah, I got this dressed up we're definitely going." I move forward nudging his shoulder. At the party I recognize no one, it was at Shinwon's house and from the looks of it no one from our school was invited? A guy who looks way too old to be hanging out with high schoolers lies passed out on the floor at the bottom of the staircase as we pass by him, he jolts awake his hand gripping my ankle causing me to yelp. Yanan quickly moves behind me wrapping his arms around my body, one presses against my belly the other on my hip ushering me away from the obviously drunk man. It doesn't take us long to find Changgu. He was talking with some tan boy I distinctively remember going to our school, he had graduated two years ago, I think. Yanan's arms slip off me as the boy gestures towards us causing Changgu to turn around. He waves goodbye to guy before coming towards us. "Hey guys!" He smiles wide, the smell of alcohol came from him causing my nose to tingle. His eyes barely skim over Yanan before turning to me. "Han Haein," He says, I sigh, he didn't even know my last name. "Is that you?" "It's Hwang not Han." Yanan mumbles, I bite my lip to keep from giggling at his correction. Changgu laughs. "Who cares," His hand reaches out to rest on my waist. "Come with me!" He tugs me forward and away from Yanan's side. I lose sight of him shortly after and to say it was weird was an understatement. I had never been alone with Changgu before. His arm moves to wrap around my waist tugging me into his side. It was weird and felt unnatural, but I let him do it anyways. I needed to get used to it if I truly did like him. Changgu drags me around the party, we go from watching beer pong, to watching that older guy from the bottom of the staircase do a keg stand, to talking to the tan boy again. Little to no conversation happened between the two of us, it was like I was some sort of accessory that he was just using for the night. We finally come to sit down on the couch, him leaning into my side as he does. My eyes trail along all the people here trying to spot Yanan, was he still here? Were people bothering him? I hadn't seen him since we got here. I felt a pair of lips press into my neck causing me to jump. Changgu chuckles into my neck. "Don't be shy, Haein." I squint backing away from him. "I'm not shy." He smirks moving closer to my face which causes me to back up against the couch. He tries to pin me to the couch, but he isn't as smooth as he thinks he is. So, he settle for his eyes darting to my lips to let me know he wanted to kiss me. Only right now I didn't want to kiss him. He clearly wasn't sober, how was I to know if he was doing this because he liked me or if I was just his girl for the night. I'm definitely leaning towards the latter. Yeo Changgu didn't like me so I wouldn't allow him to kiss me until he did, if that ever came to pass that is. I press my palm over his lips to stop him from kissing me. "I should go." Changgu whines backing up. "Don't go, are you tired? You can sleep upstairs, Shinwon has an extra bed we can sleep in." His fingers trailing up my neck to my hair. I lift my hand up lightly smacking his hand away from my hair. "I want to go home." I stand up and begin to walk away but Changgu grabs ahold of my wrist tugging me back to face him, he uses a force that causes my wrist to burn a little bit and to stumble into his chest. "Why don't you stop playing hard to get, huh?" I snort rolling my eyes at his comment. "I'm not, I just want to find Yanan and go home." I quickly stomp on his foot; he lets out a groan releasing my wrist and I leave him behind my eyes searching for Yanan. I find his lanky ass in the kitchen, he's barely standing up, more or less laying across the kitchen counter. I sigh to myself; he was wasted. I too had a couple of drinks so I couldn't drive us home either. "Yanan." I move forward to pull him off the counter. He was asleep, dear god. I pull out my phone pulling up Seungyeon's contact. From: Haein To: Seungyeon Can you do me a huge favor? Can you come pick me and Yanan up at Shinwon's? She doesn't reply right away, I wasn't expecting her to. So I move to sit Yanan up in one of the barstools, letting him lean on my shoulder as I brush what looks to be confetti out of his hair. Dear god, he's such a freaking mess right now. My hands move up to rest on his cheeks. "I have my hands full with you, I swear to god." My phone buzzes on the counter. From: Seungyeon To: Haein The shit I do for you two, I'm leaving in five minutes. I'll text you when I'm there. - We stop at Yanan's first to drop him off, it takes both her and I to get him to the door. He's somewhat awake at this point but has in no way sobered up. His mom answers the door and gasps at seeing him in this state. To say I was a little embarrassed was a lie, he was underaged and the both of us shouldn't have been drinking but here we were. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know he'd get like this. I came back and this is how I found him." I explain to her, she sighs shaking her head. "It's okay, can you girls just take him to his room. Haein you know where it's at." She ushers us in quickly. "I'll go keep his father from seeing him like this." Seungyeon gives up halfway to his bed. I drag him the rest of the way and drop him down, I rest my hands on both side of his chest catching my breath once he's down. His eyes widen and his hands quickly cover his eyes, I glance down and notice my dress has fallen down to where my bra sticks out. I quickly pull it back up into place. Yanan peeks out after a short while and lets out a "phew" sound at seeing it's fixed. He sits up tugging something off his chair moving to wrap it around my shoulders, it was his white jacket, the one he was wearing the day he got sick. I smile down at him, my hand going up to smooth back his blonde hair that was going every which way. "You're a handful." - Seungyeon drives us to her place since if I went home smelling like alcohol my parents would murder me. After I showered, I sat on her bed next to her. "What happened tonight?" Seungyeon says putting her phone down, her fingers meeting to crack her knuckles. "Why was Yanan shit-faced?" "I don't know, I was with Changgu for most of the night, when I found Yanan again he was like that." I pull my wet hair back and tie it up into a bun to keep it out of my face. Seungyeon's eyes lower to my neck. "Did you and Changgu do anything?" My eyes form into slits, my hands dropping from hair. "Why would you think that?" She points to my neck. "You have a hickey on your neck." My eyes widen, my hand slapping to my neck. "I do?" She picks up her phone raising it towards the side of my neck that I knew Changgu had pressed a kiss into, had I zoned out and let him give me a hickey too? Sure enough when she pulls her phone back on the screen was a red mark that was slowly turning a darker red. "Nothing happened like that, he tried to kiss me, but I stopped him." I rub at the mark slightly annoyed that he had left it on me. "He doesn't like me." Seungyeon sits her phone back down and leans to rest her elbows on her knees, her chin resting on one of those hands. "I know I've asked this before but are you sure you really like him?" I pull my legs up to my chest, resting my chin on top of my knees, my arms wrapping around my legs. "I-I don't know, I don't know anymore." "You don't know anything about him. Other than what, that he has a good singing voice and can play the guitar well?" She shakes her head standing up to pace back and forth in front of me. "He's been a complete asshole to Yanan these past few weeks despite them supposedly being friends, he plays with your feelings." I nod my head. "I know-I know." She stops pacing to face me. "What about Yanan?" She gestures at his jacket I still wore, over my pajamas. I lift my head off my knees. "What about him?" Seungyeon scoffs, "How do you feel about him?" She leans forward to press her hands into the mattress like she was interrogating me. I let my legs fall back to the mattress and lean back on my hands. "He's-," I pause, he was my friend. One I have come to not be able to live without clearly. How did I feel about him? I loved him of course, just as much as I loved Seungyeon. In a friend loving way, nothing more, I tell myself. Though even though I tell myself that my stomach still feels like someone's taken their fist and swung it full force into it. "He's just a friend, a really good one. He may even have made it to the best friend level at this point." She sighs falling to her knees resting her face into the comforter. "What if he doesn't feel the same way?" I sit up straight again at her words. "What do you mean?" She groans into the comforter before raising her head to look at me. "He likes you, Haein." I snort which then turns into a full-blown laugh. "No, he doesn't." She stands up and laughs too. "You're delusional. Do you not see the way he looks at you? He's got it bad for you." She hums. "He's in love with you." Yanan doesn't like me, he's not in love with me. He's seen me in some of the worst situations someone can see me in, how could someone like me for me? Nobody ever has before, why would he be any different? He was too nice and Seungyeon was reading too much into it. I stand up grabbing the pillow I planned on sleeping with. "Quit making shit up, Seungyeon. It isn't funny!" I go to turn away, I'd just sleep on the couch tonight since she wanted to utter straight bullshit. "He literally described you as his ideal type, Haein." She claims as I roll my eyes and keep walking. "I sat there and watched him stare at you as he said every part of it too." She finishes once I step out of her room. Once I'm lying down on the couch my hands cling onto the collar of his jacket bringing it to my nose, his scent, cinnamon and whatever food his mom made today. - The following weekend Yanan drags me to another party. I made him promise to not get wasted again since I was sure his mom would murder me if I ever brought her son home looking like he was that night. This time around I don't dress up, I wore black jeans, a light green top, with Yanan's white jacket over it. He doesn't comment on the fact that I haven't returned it to him yet, so I don't comment on how I'm wearing it. Somehow even though I wasn't searching for him I find Changgu. He's downing what looks to be a bottle of soju, he takes one look at me before turning away to talk to the girl beside him. I snort, moving forward to talk to him, I was going to just get it over with. Tell him I liked him, in past tense of course. I was over him, over the chase. He wasn't worth my time. But the girl who I now notice has Han Chaeyoung, the most popular girl at school drags him away before I can get it over with. Why did we even come here tonight? Why do I put myself through this torture? This was not my scene, it wasn't Yanan's either, yet here we both were out of place in a place where we were supposed to be having fun. I turn back around and move to the kitchen getting lost in all the alcohol. When Yanan finds me, the room is already spinning. His arms wrap around me to keep me from falling, he puts me into his car carefully and he drives me to Seungyeon's house, parking in the parking lot to her apartment complex. He gets me out, but I slump back against his car not wanting to go inside yet. I giggle moving my hands up to his black hair, he had recently dyed it back to its natural color. Yanan leans down pressing his hand onto the car to where his face was inches from mine. It almost seemed like he was about to kiss me, but he backs away letting out a groan. "Haein, if I told you that I was in love with you, what would you say?" I giggle to myself, seeing two of him appear before me. "You have no idea how much I love you, all I am is this-this friend to you. But to me you aren't a friend," His voice cracks, my hands reaching out to find him since he had begun to sound upset. I felt him grip onto my hands, but I couldn't really see him that well. "I have liked you since last year, since you fell asleep on my desk. You were so cute, you still are." I felt his hand cup my chin, his thumb rubbing across my cheek. "But then I found out you liked Changgu and I wanted to scream. Why him? Why would you fall for that complete asshole?" His hand guides my hand to what feels like his chest and my vision clears enough to be able to tell that I was right. His heart beats hard against my hand. "It's gotten to the point that my heart is on fire when I'm around you, I can feel it burning, burning holes to spread the ashes throughout my body causing my skin to tingle any time you touch me." He lets my wrist go. "I can't be just friends with you, Hwang Haein, I can't. No matter how much I want to I think I should just give that up that route because I can't be friends with you without being a burden to you." He pulls me into his chest, his arms caging me to his chest. "I can't be the one to hand you over to Changgu, I can't let myself do that. I think from now on you should get close to him on your own without my help." He tucks his head into my neck. "I can't be part of the reason he breaks your heart because I know how he is." Something wet trails down my neck causing me to shiver, the liquid keeps coming and soaks into the fabric of his jacket that I wore. He sniffs pulling away from me, hands cradling my face as he moves to press his lips to my forehead. But I don't feel it because my vision goes completely black. - The next day I wake up in Seungyeon's bed to a horrible hangover, it felt like my heart had moved to my brain and was trying to pulse its way out through my forehead. I groan sitting up, Seungyeon was already up for the day, her side of the bed was empty, but I heard the shower start up inside the bathroom. She comes out noticing I'm up and sighs. "Great you're up, go shower you smell disgusting." I nod and do as I'm told, I take my time in the shower washing the scent of alcohol off my skin. My hand rests on the tiles of the shower tears flowing down my cheeks as Yanan's words from last night replay in my head like a mantra. I rest my other hand on my temples rubbing at them to distract myself. I stay in the shower until the skin of my hands and feet are pruned, the bathroom mirror is fogged up as I get out. My clothes from last night have disappeared and are replaced with some of Seungyeon's. I slip them on and wrap my hair up in the towel before brushing my teeth. I come back into Seungyeon's bedroom and she's sitting on her bed. "I put your clothes in the wash." My eyes catch on Yanan's jacket hanging off the moon chair in the corner of the room. I turn back to Seungyeon. "You were right, Yanan's in love with me." She snorts picking at her a stray string on her comforter. "I wish I could say I didn't tell you so, but I did, so like," She shrugs nonchalantly. "I fucking told you so." "You did." I admit with a nod. "So now what?" She hums sprawling her legs across the bed. "What are you going to do? You like Changgu, not Yanan, he clearly can't be friends with you anymore, he's hurting himself too much by doing that." I bite my lip to keep from crying, my hand raises to my forehead. "I don't like Changgu." "Okay, that was obvious, from my standpoint anyways." She glances down at her nails. "What else?" I lower my head; it was still pounding. "And I-uh-like really need some medicine right now." "Don't have any, you'll have to go to the store." I nod grabbing my purse and Yanan's jacket off the chair slipping it on. It still smelled of him but the smell of alcohol over-powered that, I must've been really bad last night. - At the local pharmacy I rummage down the pain medication aisle looking for either ibuprofen, tylenol, or acetaminophen, whichever I saw first would work. My eyes land on acetaminophen first so I grab it and move to the fridges to grab a water. I stop on the way there whenever I see Changgu, a younger boy from our school was next to him. "Is Yanan not with you guys?" I notice Shinwon a few aisles away. "No, he's been an asshole lately. I can't stand him honestly." Changgu remarks grabbing a liter of soda. "Hey." I come around the corner and his eyes raise to my figure. "Don't call Yanan an asshole." Changgu snorts. "But he is, sweetie. He's a piece of shit, he isn't worth my time." I scoff. "And you, you think you are any better? Ha, you are worse." He rolls his eyes. "Says the girl who's had an obvious crush on me but plays way too hard to get. You don't even like him yourself. You're just using him." I shove him. "Yeah, I liked you, I'll admit it. I have absolutely no idea why I did either? Oh, that's right, it was because I heard you sing, I heard you play the guitar." Changgu squints at my words, obviously having not expected that I heard him. "I thought maybe you were a decent guy, but I was wrong, you're really just a fucking asshole." I turn to grab some water out of the fridge next to him and he stays quiet, his facial expression was shocked, I'm not sure anyone's ever spoken to him this way before. "So, do both Yanan and I a favor and fuck off." As I turn to walk to the cashier, I couldn't help but smile at myself. Maybe sometimes you need to take a break from falling in love first, especially with the same type of person over and over again and let yourself fall in love with someone who liked you first. Who knows that person may not even be your type or even on your radar at all. Take a break, let someone approach you instead of you approaching them. - By the time I make it to Yanan's place the medicine has taken effect and my headache has calmed down. I knock on his door expecting his mom to answer but the door opens to reveal Yanan instead. His eyes dart away from mine as soon as he realizes it's me, they lower over his jacket and then down to the ground. A moment of silence follows, and it goes on until I clear my throat. "I confessed to Changgu." I notice him swallow nervously, his eyes staying lowered, his hand on the doorknob tightens until I can see his knuckles whiten. "I'm happy for you." "I also called him a fucking asshole." I couldn't help the laugh that comes from my mouth. Yanan looks up, eyes wide. "You did?" I proudly nod. "Well yeah, he was calling you names, no one says shit like that about my friends." He slowly nods seeming disappointed at the word friends, but he still cracks a small smile. "Can I come in?" I gesture towards the hall; he glances behind him and bites his lip. Maybe the two of us could be more than friends? "Yeah, sure." He steps inside and I follow him shutting the door behind me. Once he's turned around to head down the hall, I lunge forward wrapping my arms around his waist from behind, pressing my cheek into his back. I felt his muscles tense up at the contact and his heart begin to race next to where my ear was placed. I smile to myself. "You aren't a burden to me because lately I've been feeling that very same burning that you described. You've seen some of my worst moments and yet you still like me despite that." I let out a breath nervously. "I cannot express how that makes me feel. And to be honest it scares me how much I've come to rely on you and how fast it happened too." Yanan slips out of my grasp to face me, a warm wide smile was on his face. "I hope from now on we can burn together." He leans forward eyes closing as his lips press onto mine, the fire inside us burning brighter, hotter, bluer until they meet in the middle and consume each other. - Epilogue: That night we sat at Seungyeon's for a movie night. Both Yanan and I keeping a distant between ourselves since we had yet to tell her that we were dating. Yanan finally nudges me after a while to tell her so I just blurt it out. "We're dating." Seungyeon claps her hands together loudly. "Thank you lord jesus, now can we get on with the movie?" I shake my head at her statement, so typical of her. Yanan laughs at her comment and snuggles against me happily. The main female in the movie turns to the guy who was clearly embarrassed. "What are you afraid I'll find out you're a virgin." I giggle leaning in to whisper in Yanan's ear. "He's just like you." I tease him. He backs up with a gasp, "Yah! You said you didn't hear anything!" I shrug playfully. "I heard everything." Seungyeon groans letting her head fall against the back of the couch. "Okay, Miss kitten panties!" He sasses me back and my eyes widen as he jumps up to run away from me. "Yah!" I stand up to take off after him. "Get back here you twig!" "Someone kill me." Seungyeon groans turning up the volume on the television. ---- A/N: This marks the end!
