1945년, 베를린이 소련에게 점령 당하면서 독일은 패전국이 됐다. 국토는 쑥대밭으로 변했고 수많은 사람들이 죽었으며, 국토는 잘못 뜯은 쌍쌍바마냥 반토막이 났다. 패전국의 국민들의 정서는 이루 말할 수도 없이 암울했다.  하지만 미국은 곧 소련과 '냉전'이라는 2차전을 벌이면서 든든한 따까리를 필요로 했다. 그래서 전범국 낙인이 찍혀있던 서독에 돈을 퍼주며 엄청나게 푸쉬를 해주기 시작했다. 마셜플랜과 독일인 특유의 기술력 성실성이 합쳐져 서독은 곧 눈부신 경제 발전을 이룩하며 순식간에 전쟁 전의 활력을 되찾았다. 국민들의 생활도 점점 윤택해졌고, 이제 먹고 사는 걱정보다는 뭔가 즐길 거리가 필요했다. 1955년, 서독에서는 이에 발 맞춰 TV방송 최초로 요리 프로그램을 방영했다. 경쟁프로그램이 없던 시절이라 시청률과 인기는 하늘을 찔렀다. 이때 메인MC를 맡은 사람은 클레멘스 빌멘로드(Clemens Wilmenrod)라는 요리사였다. 그의 실력은 일류는 아니었지만, 당대 독일인들에게 재밌고 색다른 요리들을 많이 소개했다. 그중 이 양반의 커리어하이라고 할 수있는 요리가 바로 토스트 하와이(Toast Hawaii)다. 50년대 자유진영에 속한 모든 나라들에게 형님 국가 '미국'은 돈과 무기를 복사기로 찍어내고, 먹을 게 발에 채일 정도로 넘쳐나며, 국토에 젖과 꿀이 흐른다 해도 믿을 만큼 이상적인 나라였다. 특히 그 나라의 50번째 주인 태평양 한가운데의 섬 하와이는 엽서 사진 몇장과 파병 온 미군 병사들의 허풍과 말빨이 섞여 지상'락'원으로 묘사됐다. 독일인들 또한 하와이에 대해 그런 환상을 가지고 있었다. 빌멘로드는 이런 독일인들의 막연한 환상을 자극하는 요리를 만들었다. 재료는 단 5가지. 식빵과 햄, 치즈, 그리고 파인애플과 체리였다.   만드는 방법도 지극히 쉽다.  1. 살짝 구운 식빵 위에 햄을 올린다. 2. 그 위에 파인애플을 올린다. 3. 그 위에 녹인 치즈를 올린다. 4. 중간에 체리를 올린다. 5. 끝. 참 쉽죠? 빵과 햄, 치즈는 독일에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 필수 식재료였고, 파인애플과 체리의 경우 당시 활발하게 유통되던 미제 통조림으로 (조금 비쌌지만) 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있었다. 짠 햄과 고소한 치즈 사이에서 이국의 과일이 주는 새콤달콤한 맛, 당시 독일인들에게 이 괴상한 레시피는 선풍적인 인기를 끌었다. 전후 태어난 독일 어린이들에게는 일주일에 한번 정도 먹을 수 있는 특식이었다. 만들기도 쉽고 비싸지도 않고, 모양도 그럴싸해보이니 손님이 왔을 경우 다과처럼 내놓는 요리였다. 90년대까지만 하더라도 독일 각 가정의 찬장 속에는 파인애플 통조림 한개쯤은 꼭 있었다. 마치 자린고비가 굴비 매달아놓고 밥 먹는 것 마냥, 독일인들은 이 음식을 통해 따뜻한 열대의 낙원을 그리며 힘든 일상을 조금이나마 잊어보려 했을 것이다. 굳이 체리를 올려야하는 건 아니다. 딸기잼도 된다. 그냥 빨간색에 단맛 나는 거면 된다. 기본재료는 5가지지만, 더 넣어도 된다. 위 사진처럼 온갖 과일들을 토핑해서 먹어도 된다. 21세기에 들어서는 '할머니 집 가면 먹는 음식' 정도로 여겨져왔으나, 현재 요리계에도 불어온 레트로 열풍 덕분에 다시 독일인들에게 소개되고 있다.
