This year, join the masses at your local airport, get on a flight and go somewhere new. A surf trip around the holidays? What an original idea! Regardless of how many people are flying this holiday season, you can always get away and to most regions of this world, for a surf trip if you know where to go. Here’s your guide to getting away this holiday season to a firing corner of the world...
If you want to catch Morocco at its best, go…like…now. Winter in Morocco sees North and Northwest groundswells that wake up world-class right points that make your wildest wet dream a reality. You couldn’t pick a better time to get out and take a surf holiday than December/January in Morocco. Grab your fez, your shortboard quiver and a boarding pass and you’re locked into some of the best rights in the world this time of year.
This won’t exactly get you out of the flight path of the masses, but you will score big barrels. In winter, Hawaii receives pumping swells from the West, Northwest and North, which can make for huge surf throughout the islands. If you enjoy packed lineups, the North Shore of Oahu is a guaranteed zoo. You could, however, venture somewhere a little off the beaten path and head west to Kauai for a bit more flora and fauna and a bit less on the crowds. The surf remains epic.
Want to try something new? Ecuador is your step out of the box. From December to May, southern hemisphere and North Pacific swells are both possible, the water and weather are warmest and the winds are the lightest they’ll be all year. This means you can catch Jaws at frightening heights one week and head south to Ecuador where the same swell can bring long, groomed, point perfection. Additionally, the Galapagos Islands are 600 miles off the Ecuadorian coast and, should you get skunked (unlikely), you can get your fair share of aesthetic beauty. Because the inside of your cubicle around the holidays just doesn’t cut it.
The Society Islands
All pumped up with courage and ready to score the wave of your life before getting back to the 9-5 monotony? Blast over and explore Tahiti, Moorea and the Tuamotu Islands during the holidays. The Society Islands, supposedly championed by Captain James Cook, is quite the hike, but well worth the effort. If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie and aren’t too spooked by big waves, this is where you need to be. Airfare won’t be cheap and the jet lag may sting for a bit, but can you really put a price on having the best holiday story at work?
Stuck in the East Coast snow and looking for a quick fix? Hop a flight to the Caribbean and poke around. This is prime season for good swell with Barbados, Northern Dominican Republic, Northwest Puerto Rico and Northern British Virgin Islands receiving no lack of waves. No matter where you are on the east coast, it’s pretty easy to get to and won’t suck all the time out of your holidays like a trip to the South Pacific will. Dig around long enough and you might be lucky enough to find a hidden gem that you can keep for yourself.
