Real Locations of Studio Ghibli's Famous Scenes
It makes sense to say anime scenery is based off from real world locations. I was curious and did a quick research on where Miyazaki found his scenery inspiration. Kiki Delivery's Service port location is inspired by the seaside village of Visby in Gotland, Sweden. Spirited Away Bathhouse inspired by the Honkan in Dogo Onsen on Shikoku Island and Jiufen Teahouse in Taiwan. Howl's Moving Castle town was inspired by Comar, a popular town in France. Princess Mononoke forest is actually based off from Yakushima, a heritage site of Japan. Ponyo's seaside was inspired by a port town of Tomonoura, Japan. Porco Rosso's secret hideout is inspired by Stiniva cove of Vis, Croatia.
The setting of Totoro is actually in Tokorozawa City, Saitama. Some of the scenes are inspired by Sayama Hills, where Miyazaki lives and also Totoro's forest. There's a also a life-size tour of Satsuki and Mei House located at Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park in Nagakute, Japan. Whisper of the Heart's shrine is located at Konpira Shrine, Tokyo, Japan. The Secret World of Arietty's grass field is inspired by a park in Koganei, Tokyo. That's also the location of Studio Ghilbli's headquarter. Castle in the Sky Laputa was partially inspired by heritage site Paronella Park, Queensland, Australia. When Marnie Was There seaside scene is a location at Hokkaido, Japan.
