According to the latest Census data, 9 of the 10 states with the lowest per-person income levels were Red: Mississippi, Arkansas, Idaho, West Virginia, Kentucky, Utah, Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma. The Census data also show that 9 of the 10 states with the lowest median household income were Red: Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina and Oklahoma. And 9 of the 10 states with the lowest median family income were Red: Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana and South Carolina. The only Blue state on each list: New Mexico.

Even if there is no causation its still valuable data. For example, this may tell us that poorer people are likely to vote republican which is interesting. It may also tell democrats that pursuing poverty reduction is a bad move politically since the republicans do the opposite but still win the poorest states.
@curtis i am definitely more liberal than conservative but isnt this more correlation than causation? In the first half of the 20th century, when Democrats were mostly concentrated in the south, you would be hard to press many rich blue states
