4 Benefits of Taking Time off Before College
Many high school students spend four years preparing to enter their college of choice. They take the classes they believe will give them an edge over other applicants and work on improving their GPA and adding impressive extracurricular activities. You may benefit from taking a year between completing your requirements for your high school diploma and starting your college education. There are several benefits of doing so. 1. Refresh and Refocus Going to college is usually quite an adjustment for everyone. Students who attend public or private high schools must adjust to the new freedoms, structure, and rigors of college life. When you take a year off between high school and college, you give yourself time to renew your energy and refocus on your education. This is not a year-long vacation. On the contrary, it is an opportunity to prepare yourself for the realities of what to expect as a first-year college student. It gives you extra time to research the universities you are considering and make sure your application is as impressive as it can possibly be. 2. Hone in on a Passion Giving yourself an extra year to bridge the gap between high school and college can help you decide what you want to do with your life. So much of your high school curriculum was likely focused on basic education and skills needed to pursue higher education. Taking the time to pursue your own passions can help you decide how to best apply the knowledge you have gained. Many students decide to get a job after finishing their high school requirements. A position that allows you to explore a particular area of interest not only helps you prepare for the training you can expect when you enroll in college, but also lets you start building the work experience section of your resume. Even entry level positions often require some experience. The year you spend working toward something you love can help future job prospects. 3. Gain Valuable Experience A year off holds a variety of opportunities. Whether you are planning to work, volunteer, or travel, you can gain valuable life experience when you take a gap year between high school and college. It gives you the time to direct your own continuing education before settling into the routine of a structured, focused pursuit. You can learn a lot of life skills that serve you well no matter what academic path you intend to take. If you have the means to do so, using the year between high school and college to travel can significantly broaden your horizons. Travel allows you to experience other cultures that you may have only read about during your home school education. Experiencing how other people live can help you build independence and empathy as well as other skills that cannot be learned in a classroom. 4. Develop New Friendships Use your year off to develop personal relationships with people that you would have never met had you not taken a gap year. Friendships are extremely valuable in life as they can provide social stability and also networking opportunities that will benefit you in your future career. In this digital age, many friendships may begin online. It is important, however, to cultivate relationships beyond the screen in front of you. Join a local club or volunteer group to meet other people who share your interests. Then be diligent about pursuing the connections you make. Make plans with your new friends to get to know them better. The friendships you form during this year can be supportive relationships that last a lifetime. Your education extends beyond the classroom. After you finish your high school requirements, taking a year off before starting college can have many advantages. Use the year to gain meaningful experience, make new friends, and get mentally prepared for the academic pursuit ahead of you.
[ROLL CALL] What's Your Wackiest Retail Story?
So it's the most craziest retail weekend of the year here in the States, and chances are that you or someone close to you has gone to the mall within the past 48 hours. Maybe you're one of the many that bank on some awesome Black Friday deals, maybe you just got dragged unwillingly - or even worse, maybe you went to the mall to WORK because you WORK RETAIL and this weekend, you are a SLAVE. Needless to say, I'm realizing some of you might need a place to vent out your frustrations, and don't worry, the Funny Community is here for you - and probably have some stories of our own! Today's big question - What are some of your wackiest stories about working retail? I'll start first: Now, this isn't the only weird story I have, but probably the quickest and funniest one I can remember while still keeping things G-rated. I used to work at Starbucks as a barista, and one of the things we do at work is called a 'spin'. Basically, you have to go around the lobby of the cafe and wipe down all the tables, make sure the trash cans aren't overflowing and the bathrooms are stocked, etc. One time, when I was doing a 'spin', a stereotypical soccer mom type with her 'venti three-shot no-whip no-foam extra hot white chocolate mocha' saw that I had walked right past her, and I guess she needed something and wanted some assistance. What you do when you want assistance: Go up to an employee at the front counter, the hand-off area, or maybe even someone doing a 'spin' and say "Excuse me, can you help me for a second?" What you don't do when you want assistance: Whistle at the employee like a dog. Yes, I got whistled at the same way someone would whistle at their Australian Shepherd at your local dog park. Not one of those 'yoohoo' whistles, but the one that requires you to put your thumb and your index finger into your mouth so you can let out a swift and loud WHIIIIIIIIIISTLE. My eyebrows raised in a way that I don't ever recall them raising before, and I remember thinking something along the lines of "Wow, uh.. that just happened." The best part about this whole scenario is this woman's son ended up working at our same Starbucks location only a few months later, and I spent the rest of our job together wondering if he knows his mom is the kind of person who dog-whistles at retail employees. So now it's your turn! Comment below with YOUR weirdest/funniest/most terrifying experience working retail. (Extra points if the manager backed you up.) Get Paid To Cuddle Goats!
Feeling the strain of your office job? Has stress reached an all-time high? Maybe you're looking for something a little more? Well, fortunately, you're in luck, as a Virginia-based dairy farm is looking to hire volunteers to cuddle their goats. That's right. You - yes, you! - can be a professional goat cuddler. Caromont Farm is mainly a dairy purveyor, and its base farm in Esmont, Virgninia houses several cows and goats, and as the farm strives to ethically care for the livestock in their possession, all the animals are grass-fed and cared for by someone they describe as an 'assistant goat herds(wo)man'. (That could be you. If you get the job, that is.) According to the official job posting, in order to be an aforementioned goat-cuddling herdsman, these are the requirements the company expects from applicants: Able to lift 50 pounds Committed to local food and agriculture Works well independently and on a team Willing to take initiative Excited to learn Goat lover! Spanish speaking a plus+ Am I the only one that's a little confused as to why something like Spanish-speaking is required to hang out with goats? Anyway, if you know someone in the Virginia area that is willing to get their snuggle on with a billy goat, feel free to send them to the official volunteer website, where they'll be able to sign up for a four-hour cuddle shift. For the rest of you, I just want to know this: Would YOU want to become a professional goat cuddler? Or does your fear of intimacy extend to livestock? (Just kidding. I just wanted to make a creepy joke.) Anyway, leave your thoughts in the comment area below, and for more WTF news, follow the WTF Street Journal collection!
A Blissful Place for Manga Lovers!
For the longest time I only have one reason for visiting Japan. Nope, it's not for food. Nope, it's not for fashion. Yes. It's for hot spring! I may look an average 20 something gal but I'm a grandma at heart. I've been told that many times because of my peculiar lifestyle. I love jacuzzi and hot spring is one of the thing I've always wanted to try after watching dramas that features this fabulous chamber. Even though I really wanted to visit Japan I didn't think hot spring would justify the trip because Taiwan also have hot spring. The ticket and accommodation in Taiwan is more budget-friendly than Japan. It was not until today I found another reason to go visit Japan. Books & Bed This concept is really intriguing. Though, I don't openly express it, I'm a manga girl at heart. Throw me in a room with a bunch of manga and I will be more than happy to read them. This is place is truly a gem for book lovers and someone who appreciates minimal architect. At Book and Bed Hostel you get a beautiful view of the city at night and get unlimited access to book in their library until your eyes become drowsy. The industrial interior design is filled with cement walls, wooden bookshelves and wooden single beds. Obviously, it's not a place for you to get a comfy pillow and cozy bed. If you are solo or duo traveler, this is the type of place that will bring you a blissful evening. What more do you want from a short vacation getaway than a place to sleep and get inspired? Anyone else feel the same way?
3 Korean Authors To Add To Your Reading List
I recently made a video about Haruki Murakami, and a few of oyu asked about some Korean authors you might like. Here are 3 and a half suggestions First is Kyungsook Shin, who I haven't read yet. She wronte "Please Look After Mom" which was a huge success internationally. She has had some scandals surrounding her though, because she plagarized a bit of her work from other authors... Now onto the authors I HAVE read! 1. Han Kang Most recently known for The Vegetarian, she writes in a creepy but realistic style. Everything that happens is believeable which makes it so much scarier. I'm about to read her historical fiction piece, Human Acts! 2. Chang Rae Lee I read On Such A Full Sea sometime last year and really enjoyed it. It takes place in a distopian society and is a really interesting look into how we interact with people around us! 3. Young Ha Kim I adore this author and if you're going to read anything on this list make sure you read Black Flower. It is about the true history of hundreds to thousands of Koreans being brought over to Mexico to essentially be slaves on plantations. Its a part of history I never knew about, and Young Ha Kim explains it in a really fascinating way. Have you read any of these authors?! Here are links to the books if you're interested in picking any of them up^^ Young Ha Kim BLACK FLOWER: http://amzn.to/2mltxHU I Have The Right To Destroy Myself: http://amzn.to/2m1fyGG Han Kang The Vegetarian: http://amzn.to/2lLKvOn Chang Rae Lee On Such A Full Sea: http://amzn.to/2m1jEyQ Kyung Sook Shin Please Look After Mom: http://amzn.to/2m1uXqs

Benefits of having school counsellors in schools
Students are always loaded with a lot of career-related questions and most of them are not sure whom to ask for guidance. They ask around, look for resources, talk to parents and others, but they might end up with half-baked responses. This happens because the person whom they approach for guidance may or may not have a relevant degree or training or knowledge to back the suggestions. To overcome this problem, many schools are setting up career counselling cells with qualified counsellors. They become an integral part of the school system and have a positive impact on students.  The counsellors should not forget that they have to get the right certification from places of international repute. That enhances their skills and also helps them to guide the students better.  Here are the key benefits of having school counsellors in schools: 1) Student Guidance With school counsellors on board, students get access to better guidance during the school hours. This helps them manage their time well. Otherwise, they have to seek support after the school hours and search for avenues investing a lot of time. The school counsellors can also monitor the progress of students and set an educational agenda for them. They motivate the students, make them expert learners and encourage them to interact more with parents.  Counsellors can arrange for individual or group counselling sessions based on the student requirement and help them find their true calling. They can also call for a parent and student meeting so that they are on the same page.  2) Parent – Student Connect Parent-teacher meetings are a common norm across many schools. What if these meetings act as platforms for parents to understand their child’s career goals? Career counsellors at schools can make that happen. Counsellors walk the extra mile in giving guidance to parents so that they can understand their children better and work towards their goals.  With counselling support, the school can facilitate more parent-teacher and parent-student interactions. Parents can round up all the parenting related questions and get them clarified with the counsellors.  3) Teaching Effectiveness School counsellors and teachers can work in tandem to meet the educational goals. This also improves the teaching effectiveness and increases the students’ achievements. Both can work together to plan the classroom sessions that blend theory and guidance and serve as skill enablers for students. Counsellors can gauge student behavior and learning in the classroom through various activities and pass the necessary feedback to teachers. This helps them in making the career roadmap for the students.  Counsellors can also aid teachers in the course design for effective delivery. International career counselling certification will help teachers in upskilling and doubling up as career counsellors. This is a win-win scenario for the schools and the teachers.  4) Additional Help for schools Career counsellors can bring in more admissions to schools. A school with an expert team of counsellors is valued more than other schools without counsellors. So, trained counsellors who can help students reach their career goals are need of the hour. Schools also develop an effective student management system so that students can optimally use counselling services.   Becoming a school counsellor is no mean task. But internationally acclaimed courses such as Global Career Counsellor make it a cakewalk. Listening, speaking and interpersonal skills are hallmarks of career counsellors and if they can complement them with the right certification, they can work wonders in the field of counselling. Schools should encourage their teachers and counsellors to get such certifications and they are a must for individuals who want to take a plunge into counselling.    CLICK HERE
what is career counselling
Career Counselling is the process through which one can understand one’s own self and the world around him/her to be able to chalk out a career path by making an informed decision around the same. Through Career Counselling, a student might overcome the uncertainties around his/her career, the lack of knowledge on the same, any disagreement with his/her parents, and come closer to fulfilling his/her dreams.  Why do we need a Career Counsellor?  We spend a good 40 years of our lives working on our careers. That’s almost 36,000 hours. Shouldn’t we ensure that we spend this precious time on something we enjoy? In order for us to identify what we like, and what our strengths are and how well they are aligned- we need the help of a career counsellor.  Clarity of thought School is a time when options are many. Children are surrounded by aspiring doctors, lawyers, singers, actors, sports stars. What’s more, teenagers are typically more impressionable which means they need more careful supervision. Here is when a career counselling session can really be of help to them. By asking the right questions and showcasing reality, a career counsellor can help erase some of the confusion in a student’s mind.  The direction towards the right path  Once the student’s confusion has been eased, the career counsellor can help him/her find the right path. Through multiple interactions, the student’s interests, aptitude, and personality can be concluded. In the process, the career counsellor also listens in and establishes a good rapport with the student which then puts them in a position to direct the student towards a path that is most suited to him/her.  Technology-aided assistance thereby reducing bias  It is likely that some career counsellors are influenced by their own personal bias while counselling. However, with the help of online psychometric assessments, the results are quite evident. They make the counsellor’s task easier because they can then base their recommendations on the assessments. Thus, the student receives an objective suggestion.  Awareness of lesser-known and more obvious choices It is impossible for a student to keep track of all the possible career paths available to him/her. Due to the extensive research they conduct, career counsellors are often able to shed light on the not very popular choices of careers. These unknown paths might end up being the ideal career for the student!  Who needs counselling? The CBSE requires that there be a career counsellor in every affiliated school. Every child who goes to school requires a career guidance counsellor. If children are to break free from traditions and create their own lives by not following their parents’ footsteps, they must counsel a career guidance specialist. Even children who have supportive parents can benefit from career counseling sessions because they can learn a lot more about themselves and make a more informed decision about their careers.  Who does Career Counseling?  In schools, there is supposed to be a designated career counsellor who handles queries. However, most schools are in acute shortage. As a result, schools outsource counseling work to private companies. There are several career counselling companies that shoulder the responsibility. They offer professional assessment, guidance, college shortlisting and application assistance. There are also independent career counsellors who perform the same functions on a freelance basis.  What is required to do counselling?  Most career counsellors have a Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences or Psychology or in a related discipline and they top that up with a Master’s degree in Counselling, after which, they take some more steps to earn their license to practice. After they have earned their certification and license, they can start practicing. This is the long route to becoming a Career Counsellor which involves several years of academic study and a few years of practice too.  Another way to do career counselling  Let’s say you’re genuinely interested in career counseling but haven’t had the necessary education to support a career in it. Fret not, you can do the Global Career Counsellor certification program and start practicing anywhere in the world. It is Asia’s first career counseling program in partnership with UCLA Extension. Take control of your career, become a Global Career Counsellor today!
Women Trafficking - The Reality India Lives With
India lives with the dubious distinction of having one of the largest numbers of women trafficked. Directly correlated to the levels of poverty existing in the country, women are trafficked into prostitution or bonded labour through abduction or false promises of jobs. This social evil violates the basic human rights of women and exploits them. The crime has wider dimensions with criminal syndicates and corrupt politicians and law enforcers being complicit. In this cycle of exploitation, girls and women are trafficked to various parts of the country and even abroad. If statistics are to be believed then around 2 million women and children are trafficked into the red-light areas dotting every major city in the country. Traffickers recruit women and children using coercion, lies, manipulation, and threats. Of all states, the highest number of cases have been reported from West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. In West Bengal, Murshidabad district is counted as the nerve centre of trafficking and bonded labour. This is due to the district’s proximity with Bangladesh wherein it acts as a transit point for girls and women. Also, since West Bengal shares around 2,217 kilometers of its porous border with Bangladesh, it has become a haven for such types of criminal activities. # Factors responsible for women trafficking: Poverty, deprivation, and lack of education and employment are the primary factors that force women and girls into trafficking. For example, Murshidabad district in West Bengal with a population of 7.1 million and an average literacy rate of 67.53% has abysmal levels of poverty. Such social-economic fault lines are exploited by the traffickers who lure vulnerable women and girls with promises of a better life. # Strategy to counter the social evil: Women and girls trafficking can only be countered with strong administrative measures. These include better policing of the vulnerable segments of the population, identifying the offenders (read traffickers) and punishing them through the judicial process, rehabilitating the victims and giving them dignity, educating the vulnerable population and making them employable. If the women and girls are educated and provided with better livelihood, they will not fall prey to the cons and deceit used by traffickers. # How Anudip empowers rescued women: Continuing with the above-mentioned measures, especially related to their education and empowerment, Anudip, the non-profit organization, helps with its BEST programme. It has been noticed that the victims of trafficking are not fully integrated into the society as the latter shuns them due to the stigma associated with trafficking. Anudip ensures the rescued victims are rehabilitated through its BEST (Building Entrepreneurs To Stop Trafficking) initiative. According to this programme, the victims are counselled, mentored, and trained in digital skills at the various skill development centres run by Anudip. The BEST programme provides three-months IT training to the girls/women and readies them up for jobs. The trained students, on their part, get a secure and dignified life by becoming a part of the gig economy. Conclusion The crime of trafficking has assumed menacing proportions and the victims are often left to fend for themselves. To help fight this menace and rehabilitate the victims, Anudip, through its BEST programme, trains them in skill development. Thereafter, the successful candidates are given digital livelihoods, so that they can live with dignity and come out of the cesspool of trafficking.
