Story: Just because I'm telling you this story, doesn't mean I'm alive at the end.
We woke up early to get to the red light district south of Seoul. I could feel the energy pumping inside of me already, this sweet feeling of pure chaos rising inside like bubbles rising to the surface of boiling water. I have been very tame around the guys, mostly drowning my need for excitement by sleeping with them. Here I was now about to dive back into the shadows of my past and only a small part of me feared what I might turn into would turn the guys off from me, the other part welcomed the reunion of the old me. Yong Roo was rising from the dead and it was the most dangerous thing for all parties involved. I arrived by motorcycle to Han's Seoul, this was Code's place of business. I dropped Christian off closer to the entrance of the district and told him the name of where I was going. He wasn't supposed to come in, he was just supposed to be back up if I needed it. I didn't. His business was usually closed during the day, it made it easier for me to slip in without being seen.
I walked in wearing my face mask and sunglasses. I could hear Code from the back yelling that he was closed and to come back tonight. His place had an underground part to it, he used it for laundering money. Sometimes he stored drugs and guns down there for mob members. He was supposed to be a neutral party so all mob members found their refuge here. It was kind of like a place of sanctuary, you weren't supposed to fight here but it happened, more often than he liked it too. I made my way to the back where he was and saw him sitting at his desk. I knocked on the side of the door to get his attention.
"I said we're closed" He repeated.
He was still looking at his paper work on his desk. He looked stressed and annoyed so I closed the door and walked up to the desk. I slammed my hands down on the wood with enough force to shake it. He finally looked up at me.
"Reconsider your tone towards me." I threatened softly.
"Who are you?"
I was still wearing my mask and glasses so I pulled my glasses off to show him my eyes. I looked him in the eyes as I pulled my knife out and held it to his neck. I had my gun on me but knives were more my taste anyway and Code knew that. He especially knew about the knife that I was holding, a gift he himself gave to me. Solid black except the details were in an almost neon green color. It was beautiful.
"A ghost." I answered him.
His eyes fell to the knife and then he looked at me far more serious than before.
"Roo." He whispered.
"Not anymore remember? You took care of that for me," I walked around the desk until I was on his side and I pushed his papers out of the way so I could sit on top of it. "Tell me Sungwoo, do you remember what I told you I'd do to you if anyone found out I was alive?" I asked.
My voice was chillingly dark, it was the first time I really realized how much more different I was when I was in the mob versus when I was out. I had to keep that mentality in the back of my head other wise I wouldn't survive. Sungwoo looked at me with only slight fear in his eyes. He sighed and leaned back like he was trying to remain calm and show me he was unfazed.
"I should've know you'd show up. I'm not surprised you got away, I told them you would." He said.
He turned to his computer and logged into it to start working like the situation he was in wasn't that big of a deal. It was a very big deal and he knew it. There were rules even neutral parties had to follow and when they were broken, there were consequences for it. We were friends once, I'd like to think even now we were but even that couldn't stop what was coming.
"Why don't you tell me who they were?" I said.
"You don't know?"
"If I did, would you still be using your hands?"
"Who knows, maybe you've gotten softer over the past few years."
I rammed the knife in his shoulder and he yelled in pain. I dug it in deeper giving him this menacing look. He missed the worst of the look because he was writhing in pain. How ironic that the knife he gave me to protect myself, would turn around and be used later to torture him. I left my face mask on and bent over so I was eye level with him. His hand gripped onto the arm of the chair. I looked him dead in the eye.
"Some men dressed in black came to my house, shot it up and tried to capture me in the process. Now I would much rather be torturing them than you all I need is a name. Can you help me?" I yanked my knife out of he shoulder and he groaned loud in pain. His hand shot up to his arm trying to add pressure to the bleeding. I aimed my knife at his junk and said, "or do I have to start removing body parts?"
"Damn it Roo! I didn't have a choice." He said through gritted teeth.
I straddled his lap with a wicked smile behind my mask. I grabbed his neck, pressing on his Adam's apple to make him chock. He coughed and struggled to get me off his neck so he could breathe. His eyes were wild when he saw that glint in my eyes. The look of a killer that to pleasure in the kill, that enjoyed the intimacy of it because it was arousing to my soul. My hand slid to his other shoulder while I said,
"Whether you had a choice or not wasn't the question." I stabbed him in the other shoulder making him cry out again. "I never was one for mercy."
"You haven't changed a bit. Still the devil's apprentice." He said through gritted teeth.
"I was always looking to one up my master. Now, do I have to keep this going or are you going answer my question. I truly don't mind working on somebody parts."
"Fine! Damn it. I forgot you're not entirely patient either."
I rolled my eyes at that but he wasn't wrong. I got off his lap and he groaned as he tried to pull himself up. The first stab wound was deep, I might've fucked up his shoulder really good but his right shoulder should've made a better recovery than the left. He looked up at me clearly upset but I did warn him, if he ever led anyone to me he was going to pay for it. There was still a lot more for me to do. I think he was trying to prepare for it in his mind because at the end of it all, I was still going to become the devil's apprentice. That realization was thrilling but it was scary, I took as much pleasure in violence and killing as the men who gave me my scar.
No, that wasn't completely true. The violence was thrilling but the killing was...necessary. When I killed with a gun, there was no thrill unless it was a shoot out like yesterday. A normal hit was less fun but when it came to killing slowly there was something seductive about it being so personal.
"I'm surprised you didn't recognize the men yourself." He said.
"I was a little preoccupied with getting away from them."
"You ran? That's not like you Roo."
I punched him hard in the face splitting his lip in the process. I grabbed him by the hair and yanked his head back to look at him.
"I was ambushed by a mob of them and because of what they did the secret service can crack down on me as well. So who was it!" I yelled at him.
"The same people who gave you that scar on your back." He glared at me.
So, it wasn't Changmo after all but chances are if they wanted me then they were trying to go after him. What the hell was he doing to spark all this madness? He even had Christian and Woo on his tail, what was he up to?
"White Fang? What do they want with me? I thought all parties involved believed I died." I said.
I was pissed because Code was the one to plan the fake death for me. Neither side was ever supposed to find out I was alive. I used my knife to slash a deep wound onto his chest. The wound was now beneath his slashed open shirt dripping blood, not enough to kill him but enough to send him screaming in pain.
"Look in that bottom drawer." He said gritting his teeth.
I knelt down to the drawer and opened it up.
"The top file with the blacked out label." He instructed.
I pulled out a green file folder, like he said, the label was blacked out. Inside where pictures of me with Young Woo, then pictures of me with Christian. I felt a little sick inside, they knew I was around those two but how did they end up finding me? There was even paperwork on Young Woo and Christian. They had Young Woo's criminal records as well. He even pictures of me going to the gym and studio. It looked like a stalkers album with me as the center of his obsession but I knew there was way more to it than a weirdo's fascination with me. I looked at Sungwoo who was still grabbing his left arm, the one in the worst pain. He didn't seem like he could add enough pressure because of the pain in his other arm not to mention the gash on his chest.
"They came here looking for answers. Why the girl with the long brown hair and tattoo of an ox on her arm looks so much like a dead woman. Of course, everyone knows to come to me. If you hadn't noticed already they shot me in the leg."
Code kicked himself back so that his chair would roll and I could see the bandage around his leg. He could've taken much worse. He seemed to give up information a little too easily. There was only so much he could take and killing him would cause more trouble for all the gangs than it was worth. He had a very valuable position and he only really disclosed information if he needed to. I knew there were somethings he would die for. The documents he had in the safe behind his wall, for example. The combination was locked inside his head, never written down, never told to another soul. I only knew of one document that was in there that Changmo had given him. Whatever else it contained was beyond me.
"So what were they after?" I asked.
"You're not going to even ask if I'm alright?"
"I just stabbed you twice and opened a gash in your chest, does it look like I fucking care?"
"Don't forget who nursed your nearly fatal wounds for weeks after you came back from them."
I shoved my knife into his leg twisting it as he yelled in pain. I put my hand over his mouth and glared at his face. I could smell his blood, so fresh I could almost taste it on my tongue. I spoke to him with a rough voice, sounding very much like a demon.
"Back then you didn't betray me. Criminals have no loyalty, it's a lesson I've had to learn way too many times from you people."
He gave me a softer look despite me being the one to have to stabbed him. He looked almost compassionately towards me. My face stayed hard despite feeling bad about what I was doing to him. Like I said, I'd like to think we were friends even now. The rules were the rules and right now I was showing him more mercy than what the White Fang would show to him later when they found out he told me what I needed to know.
"Like I said, I didn't have a choice. Who ever found out you were alive, found out when they were spying for White fang. I told you back then it didn't matter where you went or how much you tried to change this life will always come back to you. You knew that when you joined and you enjoyed it; why did you leave?"
"You know why."
"I know you miss it. There's a bloodlust in you that can't be satisfied. You have a thirst that can't be quenched. You live for this" He said.
I didn't want to talk about that, I just wanted to focus on what I came here for. I stood up and pulled out my gun and cocked it back before I held it up to his head. I stared at him with still eyes, violent unforgiving eyes. Killing him wouldn't solve anything, he was prepared for the bullet even if he didn't know where it would go. He knew for a fact I wouldn't kill him, as far as the rules of engagement went, killing him started a whole new level of chaos I wasn't ready for. Sungwoo looked me in the eyes, ready for what was going to come next but I still had questions that needed answering. I'm sure he found me for them but I didn't know why they wanted me and why the hell did they want Changmo after everything that devil was capable of.
"Did they tell you why they were looking for me?" I asked.
"Outside of a long overdue mission to kill you?"
I whipped him upside the head with my gun. A trickle of blood started to trail down the side of his head. He groaned a little in pain and then regained his composure; he looked up and he smiled,
"They need you and I'm sure they'll propose a nice deal to you, provided you can keep your men at bay and give them everything they want."
"You're not telling me what they want Code!"
He was pissing me off with all the games. I punched at his face again, a few punches hard enough for my knuckles to swell and so did his face. One of his eyes closed and his lip seemed to split more. His jaw took the worst of my beating. The door opened and I pointed my gun towards it, seeing Christian walking in.
"What the hell are you doing?" I asked upset.
"We need to go, there's company on the way." He said
"I'm not done yet."
"I said I'm not done!" I snapped at him.
He narrowed his eyes on me and I knew already he was recognizing the change in me. He looked from me to Code and saw his wounds, I had little bits of his blood on me and the gun I was now pointing back at his head didn't look any better. Their justification for killing was for the protection of the thousands of lives in the world. My justification for killing was survival or orders. Code was right, I lived for this. I didn't choose this by some random act of fate, I let myself get this deep. I wasn't afraid of White fang, their men were ruthless though and I had no desire to work with them but I couldn't very well kill everyone on my own. I looked to Code to finish the conversation.
"Tell me what I need to know."
"There's a plan that Changmo is enacting, one that you were around during its inception. A lot of key figures are involved." He answered.
"How the hell did they find out about that? I never told them a thing."
"People have loose lips and were willing to go through far less torture than you went through to stay alive. You choose to keep your mouth shut even when you were on the brink of death, that kind of loyalty should've been rewarded especially because that lack of loyalty is what got others killed. You have something they want Roo but if they capture you, they'll do worse than leave you with a permanent scar and memories that leave you haunted." He said
"By giving them that information you've started a war we might not survive."
He glared up at me as I put my gun away and grabbed my knifd. I leaned down to whisper in his ear,
"They knew I was coming."
He was staring straight at Christian. His face was hard and beautiful, much too perfect for the darkness of this world. I threw my keys to Christian,
"Take the bike around back I'll meet you there."
He didn't argue he just told me to hurry up. Once he was gone I stabbed Sungwoo a few times in non vital areas. If he looked like he gave up information easily, White Fang would take care of him. That was the price of being neutral party, he could deal with everyone but he also had to face the punishments of revealing information that was supposed to be kept to himself. Code bent over in pain and I wiped off the blade on his shirt. I left it on the desk almost like it was our version of a white flag.
"Roo." He called after me as I was leaving the office.
I stopped at the door.
"Good luck." He said.
I gave him a peace sault before I walked out of his office and made my way to the back door. I could hear the car engines coming in close. I put my glasses back on and made it out the back and hopped onto the bike. Christian took off at what felt like breakneck speed to get us back into the city. At this point, even the city wasn't safe for me. Things had gotten way more complicated than I would've liked. I thought everything over as we made our way back to the garage where we kept the bikes. Woo had arrived much later; he had been keeping a lock out closer to where the cars entered the red light district and had noticed the usual signs of a gangs arrival.
I had changed my hair and grew it out from when I was with Changmo's gang. I got the ox tattoo much later so they couldn't have recognized me by those features but whoever was spying knew my face. That must've been the reason for Changmo showing back up all of a sudden and to be picked up on Christian and Woo's agency meant he was making really high stakes moves. When Woo met up with us, he looked to Chrisitian like he had some secret information for him and didn't know whether or not to tell him in front of me. I was looking at Christian myself, wondering if he saw me in a new light now or if he was waiting to see just how far I would go. Young Woo seemed to notice the tension between us and looked at me as if I was the cause of it all. I suppose it wasn't entirely false.
"What happened?" Young Woo asked.
Christian looked at me almost as if he wasn't sure he knew who I was anymore. I sighed,
"A lot happened."
"You've got more blood on your hands. Did you kill him?" Christian asked.
"Whoa, what did you do Y/N?" Woo asked.
"Relax, I didn't kill him. He was my friend-- in another life."
"That's how you treat your friends?" Christian said.
"There's a code of conduct each gang has to follow. He knew there was punishment coming for what he did."
"But you're not apart of a gang anymore Y/N, right? What's going on with you?" Woo asked.
I stood up annoyed. I wanted a drink and I wanted to leave. There was a very big part of me that just wanted to handle this on my own. I was combative at the moment. Sleeping with one of them might've calmed me down but when the situation came back I'd only become combative again. When I was working Changmo, we had an understanding. We could work together but our ways of working together were very similar. The only way I could work with these guys is if I was willing to work like them or they would work like me. The thing was, I wasn't going to survive playing by the book with them.
I wasn't sure what I could do to keep the old me from resurfacing. She was already making a come back and if it wasn't for the gangs arriving as soon as they did I probably would've done worse to Sungwoo. Sungwoo would warn them that I was going to come after them. The only way to start that was to get help from my boys but I wasn't even sure they would talk to me. Woo and Christian would probably be against adding anymore criminals in this mix. I just let out a heavy breath and walked away from them but they followed, calling after me.
"We're not done talking." Christian said
"You two are welcome to babble on if you want but I'm not in the mood."
"Y/N what's going on? You've been different ever since yesterday. You're acting different, like a-" Woo cut himself off.
I stopped in my tracks and turned to look at him.
"Like a what? Like a criminal? That's right because as far as you two are concerned that's who I am right."
"We don't think that." Christian said.
"Don't you? I can see it in your eyes and the two things I know about the both of you is that Woo you're all about your job, the rules the regulations, all of it and Christian, you're all about loyalty. You feel betrayed don't you. Not just from what you saw but what you heard." I said.
Woo looked between the two of us and stepped towards me. I pulled my gun back out and held it up to him. My hands weren't shaking, they were still but the rush in my veins made my body feel like it was vibrating.
"This is how you see me right? Bad girl with a gun? I promise you both I know how to use it and I very rarely miss. Being a part of the Changmo's mob fed into my desire for life, I didn't just value it more but I risked it a lot more. One fight after another, one body after another. That life is about kill or be killed so the only way I survive this is to go back to who I used to be. No mercy. Any sign of weakness will get all of us killed." I said
"We know that you have to do what's necessary but don't lose yourself in the process. You live through this, we go back to our old lives." Woo said
"Then you have to be willing to kill everyone."
There was conflict in there faces but these mobsters had friends in high places. Changmo was the top one and if what Sungwoo told me was true then he was really about to open up an operation that would cause more chaos than what we could contain. Changmo had to die at the end of this, even if it got me killed I had to take him with me. I couldn't let him reach his goal.
"Come sit down and just tell us what we need to know so we can create a plan." Christian said.
I couldn't fight it anymore. He was right we needed a plan one that helped us achieve the ultimate goal but we had to agree on that goal. The only way I maybe able to get them to agree to that goal was if they agreed to kill Changmo but that also meant I had to eliminate the threat of White Fang. Even as I stood between them, I realized I knew one way to get them to back off of me and it was dangerous as hell.
So I went back to the underground layer of the garage and took a seat at the round table we had sitting by the wall. Woo and Christian sat in front of me and I took a moment to collect my thoughts before I said,
"Changmo has connections in the government, Moon Taeil is one of them."
"The trade Commissioner?" Christian asked surprised.
"Yeah. Taeil helps get shipments of drugs pushed through checks easily. Changmo works for him, except they hate each other. Taeil is too unpredictable and Changmo doesn't like the risk that he poses against him. During my last year with him, Taeil became ill. The media said he was sick but in truth, he was poisoned."
"Please don't tell me you poisoned the trade commissioner." Woo said putting his hand to his face.
"Kind of jumping the gun a little don't you think? Don't worry it wasn't me. Changmo did it as a warning for Taeil to keep up his end of the deal. Changmo had products coming in from all over the world and Taeil was advocating a bill to be passed to crack down on illegal trading while simultaneously trying to force Changmo to bring in more products. Taeil ended up enlisting the White Fang to take care of Changmo. However, The White Fang wanted Changmo's territory as well as some other information. They caused a distraction when we were out and in my attempt to protect Changmo I was captured--they tortured me for information."
Christian covered his mouth while an expression of anguish on his face quickly turned into anger. His eyebrows narrowed down and as his hand lowered to his chin I could see his lips press together. His jaw was tight and I could tell he was really trying to hold back how pissed off he was because he had put it together. What he heard from Code, the white fang were the people that tortured me to almost near death. It made me feel loved by him and I wanted to smile but the memory of being tortured wouldn't allow me to. Woo looked at Christian then me, waiting for me to continue. Woo's expression was harder than Christian's; it made it hard for me to read his expression.
"Taeil knew that Changmo was starting to work on something and he wanted the White Fang to take him out but the White Fang's leader wanted to know exactly what that was so they could use it as leverage if Taeil became a threat to them. It sparked a war between the two gangs which distracted Changmo from his goal for a while."
"What was the goal though?" Christian asked.
"You see there's a chain of command in Seoul. Changmo is a very influential and prominent mobsters but Taeil is far more influential. Taeil has Changmo keep the ADA and judges in check in turn they keep certain police chiefs in check and their corrupt cops as well, some he pays off others he sells drugs too. There are other politicians I heard were buying nights with prostitutes but I never knew who. Changmo wants to disrupt this system though. He was sick of Taeil's orders and during my last year with him he started formulating a plot, not just to remove Taeil from his position but to place someone else on top."
"Just because he hated Taeil?" Woo said not convinced.
I gave him a half hearted smile.
"Don't you understand, by disrupting the chain of command and putting his men in place Changmo automatically because far more powerful than Taeil ever was. Changmo is a dreamer, he aspires to reach higher in his goals. He owns restaurants, bars; he's invested so much money into a record label he practically owns it. Changmo is obsessed with money and power and anyone who gets in the way of his plans will be eliminated. I don't know who Changmo has in place to replace Taeil but if he's starting to make his move now, Moon Taeil will be dead soon." I said
Woo and Christian were silent for awhile. Perhaps they were wondering how in the hell their government system became so corrupt or how someone as young as Ku Changmo became so powerful. They underestimated him for one, just because he was young didn't mean he wasn't calculated. His ambitions spurred him on and a man with ambitions will stop at nothing to achieve them. I used to believe that made him interesting, inspiring even but now I know it makes him dangerous. He has nothing else he cares about, nothing he loves. Despite his need for loyalty among his men, it was troubling he had no loyalty for anyone but himself. Many times I risked my life to protect him and in his mind I was only doing what I was hired to do. Although, I can't say my attempts at trying to protect him were entirely noble but I was loyal to him.
As Christian and Young Woo processed the information I gave them, I was thinking about how to disrupt the White Fangs facility. I knew my boys could help me with that and the thought of explosions and chaos was building adrenaline in me but also making me a little turned on. In order for me to do this though, I would have to get away from Young Woo and Christian. I looked at them and saw the dark expression on their faces. They looked grave as if they knew now they couldn't truly trust anyone. I wondered if they thought the same about me. Then I thought even deeper, wondering if they should trust me. I was already regressing slowly into the violent son of a bitch I used to be and I was already enjoying it so much that I really wanted more. My fear was that they would eventually notice that eagerness to be a disaster queen, to once again become the devil's apprentice. Would they notice it before I fully reverted back or would they be too late? I wondered even more, if I survived this, if I won....Would I truly be able to go back to my daily life with them? Would they be enough to satisfy this never ending need for a thrill or would I always deep down crave danger and chaos?
"Let me ask you something, you've been with us for two years now; how long before we met where you out of Changmo's life?" Woo asked.
"So why did it take him three years to start his plan?"
"Because these things take time and Changmo can be patient when a plan requires it. Like I said, the war with White Fang was a bit of a distraction but he was still able to start putting people in place. Not to mention he needs his inside man to gain favor among the public and other politicians, it takes time to form bonds. His plan isn't something that just ends with Taeil. It's done in phases it expands through time. To be quite honest, cutting off the head of the snake won't stop the devil's plan. Changmo's influence is like an infection, it creeps in and slowly spreads from one person to the next; before you know it, you have an epidemic on your hands. I wouldn't be surprised if he had connections inside your agency as well."
"Don't go there." Christian warned.
I gave him a soft smile. I could see something in his eyes. A reflection of anger and confusion. He was wondering what to do next, they both were but there was something else lingering in his mind. I was almost positive I knew what it was too. He couldn't let it go, I wondered for a second how much it was on Woo's mind but at the moment I cared more about Christian. How deeply was he thinking about the scar on my back, the story behind it that I had hidden for so long and still they didn't know the extent of the torture I endured. Did he hate me or hate the Fang? Did he want revenge, was bloodlust flowing through his veins? The thought of that excited me, my well groomed ever so flawless lover, always so gentle and kind towards me becoming a violent man. I imagined the men that tortured me hanging up from the ceiling the way I was, me pressing the button that pulled them up higher and Christian working at their core like they were a punching bag. I imagined beads of sweat building and dripping down his body, the scent of man and blood in the air as he carved out pieces of their flesh and rubbed salt in their wounds. I took some sadistic pleasure in the imagery my mind created but these were things Woo would do. I saw Christian kill with a gun, with very little conviction but guns made killing impersonal sometimes. Knives made everything personal, up close in the face of a victim made the killing all the more sweet. Don't get me wrong it wasn't that I loved killing, it wasn't bloodlust like Code said. However, I prided myself in being good at what I did and a personal kill made my adrenaline pump so much faster. My body knew how to get its high: a shoot out, a boxing match, a chase, sex... I was able to get naturally high and I loved it.
Christian told Woo to go to their headquarters to inform their boss of everything they learned. It was no surprise to me that Woo wanted orders on how they should proceed next. Woo asked Christian if he was coming with him but Christian used the excuse that he needed to stay behind to protect me. I would've argued against it but I could see the look in his eyes. Protection wasn't on his mind; it was the first time I saw my softer lover look so...dangerous. Woo left while jokingly telling us not to have too much fun without him. Christian stared at me in silence for a long time before he made his way towards me. Now positive Woo was gone, he caressed my cheek in his hand and crashed his lips against mine.
