DevOps Security Practices at Codica: How We Create Secure Web Products
The article was initially published in the Codica blog. Computers and networks have transformed many aspects of our everyday routines. The evolution resulted in new learning and communications techniques as well as security requirements for virtual systems. This article explores the crucial concepts necessary for robust security. Also, we share Codica’s experience in using them to ensure safety in custom web solutions. What is security, and why is it important? Security is the protection of your systems against outer threats. It relies on different layers and procedures. When your solution is protected, it helps avoid the relevant business risks and instability of your solution’s work. It is worth noting that security is not a limited set of tools. It is rather a set of both tools and guidelines that help protect your solution. As threats constantly change, so do the security guidelines. The most common model that represents typical threats is STRIDE, developed by Microsoft. The acronym denotes different security leaks, such as unauthorized modification or distribution of data. The most important security tools include the following: - Firewalls, - Intrusion Detection System (IDS), - Antivirus, - Encryption tools, - Packet sniffers, - Penetration Testing. The instruments constantly evolve. For example, firewalls changed, as presented in the image below. Security concepts are standardized under CIA and AAA models, which help us in our practice. CIA stands for confidentiality, integrity, and availability. It states the importance of protecting data against unauthorized access and changes. The AAA term means authentication, authorization, and accounting. It means verifying the user’s identity through a step-by-step verification process. You can see the whole process in the picture below. The security concepts and models help streamline an efficient approach to protecting solutions. We discuss Codica’s practices below as an example of the successful implementation of the security principles. Security pillars in product development: Codica’s experience At Codica, we use AWS cloud services for managing infrastructure security. We manage our infrastructure with code. The Infrastructure as Code (IaC) approach allows for scaling and cost saving. Also, it enables you to move the vast security processes to the primary cloud provider. That is why we use Terraform for our web projects. It allows creating and updating of the AWS infrastructure. Through Terraform, you can ensure an accurate result “as expected”. Furthermore, you can create more infrastructures if you need better fault tolerance and higher availability. For monitoring API activity, we use CloudTrail. This is a service for a continuous record of events in an AWS account. You can read more in AWS Documentation. With that said, we will discuss with examples how you can improve security with AWS tools and services. Infrastructure security As we work with the AWS infrastructure as a service, we care that this environment is protected from our side. For example, when creating any resource, you can run the code through a tfsec security scanner and see what improvements and security-related fixes you can make. These may include adding descriptions for better auditing, as well as reworking security groups' ingress rules. Also, usually, it is essential to allow only inside-VPC traffic, which helps make ingress rules more efficient. Besides, we recommend using this security group rule resource. Thus you will be able to modify security groups without recreation. Inventory and configuration management These operations are necessary to monitor the architecture’s state. For example, thanks to configuration recording, we can see that our server configuration or security groups changed and take some actions in response. To see the current state of architecture, we use tfsec, terrascan, and dritfctl for security scans and config recording (with Terraform states). Below is a typical layout of Terraform infrastructure. Cloudwatch metrics filters against the CloudTrail log group help us in work as well by notifying us about changes or unauthorized API activity. We also follow GitOps practices, which enables us to keep updates on the infrastructure configuration in the repository. Cost control and cost optimization are also vital when building solutions. To optimize the costs, we use Infracost. Data encryption Encryption means turning data into a secret code. It conceals the data that you send or store. In our practice, we do not encrypt all data as it is inefficient. But it is necessary to understand what data need to be encrypted. For example, we encrypt confidential data. We use KMS for that. This is the Amazon service that helps create and control keys for data encryption kept in AWS. Also, we encrypt a database and place it in private subnets within our subnet group. This is done in combination with a well-made ingress rule and choosing a long username and password (or using IAM authentification). These methods will help you keep your database secure and save you from a lot of problems in the future. Identity and access Access control is vital for protecting the environment against unauthorized and harmful actions. So, we use AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM). This instrument helps us create users and assign them certain policies. So, we can control which AWS resources and services they access. In our practice, we also always use multi-factor authentication (MFA) for console users. When we need to provide developers or applications with access to AWS, we apply strict policies. For application credentials, we use per-service policies and create separate users and roles. Monitoring and logging In simple words, logging means recording information about processes in an application or environment. To do this, we write to them to cloudwatch log streams. You need to set up tools for that. If monitoring is tuned right, we get notified about downtime in just a few seconds as they appear. Thanks to monitoring, we see if the application stopped working for some reason and understand why there is an issue in performance. Based on our DevOps security practice, we’ve chosen the Prometheus stack as the best set of tools for our needs. It includes Alertmanager for notifications, Grafana for visualization, and a list of different exporters. Also, we use Pagerduty to see if there are any alerts. This tool also sends us notifications to a few different endpoints, including Slack and email. Container security It means the protection and securing of the containerized environment OS and host OS as well as applications. In our practice, we use multi-stage Dockerfiles, custom users, and we do not add any sensitive data to Dockerfiles. Other recommendations that come from our experience include packing minimum data to images. Also, we create images that will not install or pull any updates or similar processes at the start. In our practice, we use docker’s BuildKit and Kaniko image-building engines. Conclusion Security is one of the vital aspects of a solution. At Codica, we ensure it with proven tools and by applying best practices. If we get a request from our client on scaling a solution, we are eager to revise the security aspects of the solution architecture. If you need a reliable software solution, contact us. Our team will help you build, secure, and optimize your product.
Study of Smart Contracts: Concept and Evolution
What is a smart contract In 1996, Nick Szabo proposed the concept of smart contracts in the article “Smart Contracts: Building Blocks For Digital Markets”. The so-called “contract” is something like a clause or a contract, which records the conditions of occurrence and the corresponding executed clauses to support operations such as confirmation of rights; the so-called “intelligence” means automation and programmability. Therefore, Bridge Smart Contract Development Services is a programmable contract, and it can also be understood as a self-executing clause contract. In a computer, it is a self-executing program fragment. It is easier to save the contract, and it is run by a certain algorithm. Given the input, the corresponding output is obtained, which greatly guarantees the execution of the contract. Using the vending machine analogy can help us better understand the core features of smart contracts. When the user selects the goods to be purchased and completes the payment, the shipping logic will be triggered, and the user can get the desired goods, and this process does not require manual intervention, which saves the labor cost of selling goods. If you want to break this contract, you have to physically destroy the vending machine. Like POS card swiping machines, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), etc., this analogy can also be used. Smart Contracts and Blockchain Smart contracts were proposed in the last century, while blockchain was born in 2009. By definition, smart contracts have little to do with blockchain. So why have smart contracts and blockchains been so closely related in the past 10 years? Because the blockchain can ensure that the smart contract cannot be tampered with, not only the contract content cannot be tampered with, but also the record of each call. The most basic premise for smart contracts to generate value is to have a strong underlying medium for storage, so that it cannot be physically damaged. However, the ontology of a smart contract is a piece of code, which is very easy to be tampered with, and how to provide a strong storage medium for it becomes a problem. This is exactly what the blockchain is good at solving — through the practice of Bitcoin, Cross chain bridge development it has been proved that the blockchain can make electronic records immutable in a distributed environment. At the same time, smart contracts are also feeding the blockchain, which greatly expands the business scenarios of the blockchain. After being combined with smart contracts, the blockchain no longer serves a single currency payment, and can be extended to all aspects of life. The rich application scenarios also pose new challenges to the capabilities of the blockchain. Blockchain 2.0: The Birth of Ethereum Bitcoin, born in 2009, uses technologies such as blockchain to ensure the ecology, creating the era of blockchain 1.0. Users can customize some things through script code, such as how to unlock a fund. These script codes are saved with the transaction, thus enjoying immutability and determinism. So from a certain perspective, these scripts can also be regarded as smart contracts. But they don’t work well. First, these script codes are not Turing-complete, which limits the functions that can be implemented; second, the development threshold is high, and the experience of writing complex logic will be poor, such as writing programs with JVM bytecode. In 2013, a young goddess Buterin proposed Ethereum, the core of which is to update and verify blockchain data through the state of the world. The biggest difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin is that complex logical operations can be performed through smart contracts. On Ethereum, the language of smart contracts is Solidity, Build a cross chain bridge which is a Turing-complete and relatively upper-level language, which greatly expands the capabilities of smart contracts and reduces the difficulty of writing smart contracts. Because of this, the birth of Ethereum also marks the beginning of the blockchain 2.0 era. Subsequently, smart contract technology has gradually penetrated into multiple business scenarios such as traceability, certificate storage, and supply chain. Status and Prospects of Smart Contracts From a programming perspective, a smart contract is a piece of code. Smart contracts have many differences and limitations compared to regular code, such as: single thread execution Code execution consumes resources and cannot exceed resource limits It is currently difficult to obtain off-chain data, such as weather information, game results, etc. Other restrictions like TPS These characteristics make the current smart contract ecology center on the governance of on-chain resources. Just like various ERC standards and governance schemes on Ethereum; there are various resource models on EOS, such as CPU, RAM, concurrent economic model, Rex, Bancor protocol, etc. Obviously, as far as the current ecology is concerned, the influence of smart contracts on the real world is limited. But things are always evolving. At present, there have been many researches devoted to breaking these limitations, typically Oracles (oracles, but often referred to as oracles), which allow smart contracts to interact with off-chain, which can greatly improve the use of smart contracts In the scene, it seems that a computer is connected to the Internet; for example, those attempts to break through the performance bottleneck of the chain itself, such as payment channels, cross-chain, plasma, and rollup, all break the shackles of security and performance from different angles. Undoubtedly, smart contracts will play an increasingly important role, and with the implementation of Ethereum 2.0 in the future, a new blockchain era may be opened. Smart Contract Technology Ethereum adopts Solidity as a smart contract language, Solidity is a high-level programming language created to implement smart contracts that can run on nodes that allow Ethereum programs. The language absorbs some features of C++ and JavaScript, such as it is a statically typed language, supports inheritance, libraries, etc. In addition to Solidity, the smart contract technology of each platform is also different. Next, we will introduce the technologies adopted by other platforms from the public chain and alliance chain. Smart contract operation analysis The function of this Solidity code is to access the _num field. This field is called a “state variable” and is persistently stored by the blockchain. Users can deploy this code on Ethereum or similar blockchains. Successful deployment means that the smart contract can no longer be modified. As long as the underlying blockchain is not destroyed, the contract will always exist. Anyone can call the contract interface through the “contract address”, and the information of each call will be recorded on the chain. Before explaining how this code works, let’s review how a traditional java program works. First, after the user compiles the java code, Build a token bridge it will be saved on the disk in the form of bytecode; then the user will call the program, which is managed and executed by the JVM; during the execution of the program, the call parameters may be recorded through the log, and the Disk for IO. Solidity’s implementation is similar. The difference is that the medium is changed from hard disk to blockchain, and from stand-alone to distributed. After the code is deployed, it is stored on each node in the form of bytecode. When a user requests to call a function, the call request will be included in the transaction and packaged into a block. Once the entire network reaches a consensus on the block, it means that the call is legal. Next, the EVM will call the bytecode, which is responsible for accessing the underlying state variables, just like traditional programming IO. Epilogue This article introduces the concept and historical evolution of smart contracts. Smart contract is a technology proposed in the last century, which has radiated new vitality under the wave of blockchain. On the contrary, the extensive application scenarios of smart contracts have greatly promoted the development of blockchain. To learn smart contracts, it is recommended to choose Solidity language, because it has the characteristics of some traditional languages. At the same time, the execution environment is completely based on blockchain, and the actual business development experience will be different from the previous programming experience. Readers can try to quickly build a blockchain environment based on FISCO BCOS, deploy a simplest contract, become familiar with the deployment and invocation methods, and then further enter the world of Solidity.

Is React Native Still Relevant In 2022?
Technologies change every day and being a leading web and mobile app development company, we strive to employ the relevant and latest technology to be able to provide our clients with dynamic apps. Let's discuss how React Native is performing in 2022. Introduction The demand for cross-platform app development is increasing as we speak. The reasons behind this are well-founded in facts. Cross-platform apps not only reduce the costs and time of development but also prove to be the right tool to reach a larger audience compared to being present on just one platform. Amongst the other technologies, React Native has time and again proved its mettle when it comes to building robust cross-platform apps. It is also popular among developers as it allows for building apps with less code. But, due to the rise of other frameworks, experts once again face the challenge of speculating React Native’s relevance and future in the coming times. In this article, we will analyze whether React Native is still a safe bet for developers. Let’s begin. What is React Native? To start with, React Native is the open-source UI development framework that allows developers to build applications for Android, Android TV, iOS, macOS, tvOS, Web, Windows, and UWP using React framework along with native platform capabilities. It allows the same code to be reused to run on different platforms with minimal changes. This speeds up and enhances the efficiency of the development process. What’s the latest in React Native? Ever since its introduction, React Native has seen numerous updates and revisions that have only added to its robustness and reduced its API surface area to make it more lightweight. It is holding its position in cross-platform app development as always. A majority of tech giants use it for developing their apps. The state of React Native app development in 2022 is backed by support tools added in the previous and current year and subsequent releases. They make it better for developers and businesses simultaneously. One of the most recent and pivotal changes that we saw lately was the update in its architecture. React Native 0.69 just got announced with powerful new features such as React 18 support and bundled Hermes. It comes with React 18 enabled by default, new hooks such as useId, and new features such as useTransition or full Suspense support. Earlier versions of React Native and Hermes came separately. This always raised confusion in identifying which version of React Native is compatible with which version of Hermes. React Native 0.69 comes with a compatible version of Hermes to address this issue and provide developers with a more streamlined and stable use of Hermes. How does React Native work? In older versions, the basic component of React Native used to be the Bridge. It is used to control all the communication between JavaScript and native components and vice versa. The bridge translates JavaScript code into platform-specific components. Although these async calls used to occur apart from the main thread, having multiple threads and large amounts of data could result in delays. For example, when a user presses a button, the case is translated into an event for the JavaScript to understand. The bridge translates native events for React components to understand by communicating with native platforms and JavaScript code. This is an asynchronous way of relaying information. However, the new architecture removes the need for a bridge. Instead of passing data over the bridge in an asynchronous manner, developers will have reference to C++ host objects, which can be called directly and get the response back synchronously. This is quite similar to how we get node references in ReactJS and perform actions on them. What are the alternatives to React Native in 2022? Although the architecture of React Native allows for code reusability, live-to reloads, third-party plugins, cost-efficiency, and a lot more, there are other frameworks that challenge its authority. The top alternatives to React Native include: Flutter Flutter, just like React Native, is a cross-platform framework for developing striking user interfaces. The primary reasons why the Flutter community is gaining popularity every day remain the look and feel of the Flutter widgets for app creation and the absence of bridging required in the case of JavaScript. Since Flutter uses Dart as the programming language, the lack of bridging enhances its performance. Xamarin Xamarin is owned by Microsoft and uses .net and C# for cross-platform app development. It allows you to create an iPhone app on Windows and compile it on Mac. Only the build is platform-dependent. The look and feel of the app built using this will be completely native. The growing community and support available also make Xamarin a worthy opponent for React Native. Nativescript Nativescript uses JavaScript, Angular, VueJS, and TypeScript as the base languages for creating cross-platform apps. The reasons to choose Nativescipt over React Native might include the availability of hundreds of verified plugins and the ability to deliver fairly performance using web programming languages. Is React Native still being used for native mobile app development? Contrary to the belief that React Native is becoming obsolete, market trends indicate it is still being used for native mobile app development. As much as industry leaders like to invest in cross-platform apps, native apps still make a large chunk of the market share. React Native reduces the development cost and time for some components of a native app. What is the future of React Native cross-platform development? Experts predict that React Native will be relevant in future cross-platform app development. The reasons that support this speculation are as follows: Backed by JavaScript JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages. React Native builds on this language, allowing developers to easily understand and create advanced applications. Even when clients need to switch to React Native from other platforms for mobile app development, the learning curve for javascript is not that steep for new developers. Large community Developers also prefer using this framework because of the large community where they can connect and find solutions to problems. There are constant upgrades and changes to help provide the support required. A community-driven approach to building agile apps is more preferred and sustainable than depending on other technologies such as Dart, with relatively smaller community support. Third-party plugins Building an app from scratch can be an expensive affair. Therefore, React Native offers a range of third-party plugins that help developers build apps, including JavaScript-based and native modules. These plugins help enhance the performance of an app by eradicating the need for certain web view functions. Live reload React Native's live reload capability enables you to interact with updates in real-time. While the app is loading, you can make code changes that will automatically cause a refresh of the app. To speed up the compilation, you can also reload a specific area of change. Cost efficiency Reusability of code also brings about reductions in the cost of app development. There is no need to hire more developers in different teams based on the platform. Also, the pre-built components further speed up the development process and reduce the project timeline. Conclusion: These were a few of the eminent qualities that, we believe, justify React Native’s ability to withstand competition from other technologies for a long time. Being a leading cross-platform app & Blockchain development company, GeekyAnts has been and will be utilizing the sturdy and ever-evolving framework of React Native for the foreseeable future. Our expert developers are well-versed in building React Native apps that help cater to client requirements and reach larger audiences. The Working Procedure of a Moisture Analyzer
The primary job of a moisture analyzer is finding out the moisture level of a substance by gauging the weight lost by it after being heated for a certain period of time. The majority of these instruments are capable of measuring moisture level of any substance that has 0.1% to 99.9% moisture in it. Before beginning the actual measurement procedure, the lab technician needs to remove a sample from the slurry, solid or liquid he or she will be testing using the moisture analyzer. Next, the technician will need to set the drying parameters for the sample. The instrument used for moisture level measurement will show results based on those parameters. If you are using this type of measuring tool for the first time, you must be aware of the fact that these tools works following TGA or thermogravimetric testing principles. It is the same principle we have mentioned at the beginning of this article; a TGA test helps in measuring the weight lost by a particular substance as a result of being heated. Analysis of weight loss caused by evaporation of a liquid can help in determining the moisture content of that substance. If the device you are using knows the drying parameters of a particular substance, it will always keep those parameters in mind when heating up the furnace. Drying parameters are usually decided based on the material's chemical makeup; for instance, if water is the main liquid present in a material, its drying parameter would most probably be 105° Celsius. After adjusting the device and setting the drying parameter, the laboratory technician will have to close the moisture analyzer. Closing the device before initiating the actual measurement procedure is a must for getting accurate results. Once the technician closes the instrument, the sample will start heating up. This will continue for a specific period of time and all through this process the analyzer will keep on recording the weight lost by the material. The process will go on until the furnace is shut off. However, the sample is not removed from the device instantly. The technician allows it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before removing it. Are you wondering how will you know the measurements? These devices generate printouts of all the data recorded whenever they perform a moisture measurement job. Some of the information the printouts will contain include the original weight of the sample, the weight of the sample after being dried and the amount of moisture present in it. When searching for a moisture analyzer or any other measuring tools you might need, it is best to look online for suppliers to be sure you are getting the best deal. Data Support Company [DSC] is a popular store that sells measuring instruments like moisture analyzer, fat analyzer, weighing scales and balances. The store has gained so much popularity primarily due to the standard of products it offers.
7 Amazingly Efficient Lead Nurturing Tactics
Although there are various lead nurturing strategies out there, here are seven of the most efficient, no matter what type of business you run for. 1. Leverage targeted content. When it comes to lead nurturing, one size surely does not fit all. As the analysis proves, strategically nurturing your leads with targeted content can significantly enhance results. Start by working to understand each of your different buyer personas. Then, build a variety of targeted content designed to nurture each of your personas based on their characteristics like interests, objectives, goals, and marketing triggers. You should also have a marketing automation platform in a position to help you classify, segment, and target your unique buyer personas as you scale your strategy. 2. Use multi-channel lead nurturing techniques. In the past, most lead nurturing tactics included setting up a simplistic email drip campaign that would send out generic emails to a list of prospects. Today, marketers like you are looking for unique strategies and technologies that include and go beyond email nurturing. With the help of powerful marketing automation platforms, savvy marketers are now performing multi-channel lead nurturing strategies. Efficient multi-channel lead nurturing most usually includes a mixture of marketing automation, paid retargeting, email marketing, social media, dynamic website content and primary sales outreach. Because there are so many tactics included, to execute this accurately, you need to assure that your sales and marketing teams are well aligned and working cohesively. 3. Focus on multiple touches. While the buyer's journey for every product and help can be pretty different, research has recommended that on average, prospects get marketing techniques from the time they become aware of your company till the time they turn into customers. As you can assume, the most prosperous lead nurturing tactics deliver content that benefits prospects progress through the buyer’s journey by approaching common questions and concerns. In addition to email strategies, examine how you can use a mix of content types like social media, whitepapers, interactive calculators, blog posts, or even direct mail, to nurture your prospects into buyers. 4. Follow up with leads on time. The advantages of prompt follow-up calls seem very evident, but most businesses still aren’t acting very immediately. Automated lead nurturing can help you reach large groups of possibilities, but a timely follow-up email or a phone call is still often the best way to turn inbound leads into qualified sales possibilities. That's because the benefits of converting a lead into a sales opportunity are exponentially higher when the lead is communicated quickly following a website conversion. When you get a timely, well-planned call to an inbound lead, it’s far more efficient than any volume of cold calling.
