L'ecole @ Grand and Broadway
L'ecole, located at the corner of Grand St and Broadway (next to Daffy's), is a charming International Culinary Center trainer French Restaurant that ALWAYS offers variety due to the fact it cycles new students in for training, for better or for worse. Having run into L'ecole by accident when I was working in the area, I did not completely comprehend the experience that is L'ecole. The design of the restaurant is simple and appealing. The staff is so vibrant, young, and very accommodating (many reviewers have guessed their grades are affected by customer experience). That is one of the main appeals to this establishment: eager enthusiastic students. Therein, however, also lies its main issue. The restaurant, being a training restaurant for the French Culinary Institute, changes its staff and menu on a very regular basis, thus it is a little bit like playing russian roulette with your food. Mixed reviews online, by my friends, and myself all seem to be predicated on this fact. L'ecole offers 3 course and 4 course lunch menus for $32 and $47, respectively. Its dinner 3 course and 4 course menus are $44 and $59, respectively. Personally I would recommend the 3 course lunch menu, as it has always been more than plentiful for me (and I am not one to hold back) and the variety and quality of its dishes are quite good. Due to the ever-changing menus and chefs, reviewing a single specific platter is not truly representative of what may be offered at the time. Nevertheless, the food is, more often than not, very pleasing. The atmosphere is invigorating, and the staff is always ready to work to please, such as often giving complimentary desserts.
