카우보이에 대해 물으면 대부분 이런 이미지가 떠오를 것이다  이 카우보이들에게 유래된 것이 "로데오" 다.  로데오란 "길들이지 않아 날뛰는 야생마나 들소를 타고 버티는 마장마술" 이다.  이 로데오로 파생된 죽음의 스포츠(?) 대회가 있다. 바로 "황소 타기 대회"다.  영어로는 BULL RIDING이라고도 하며  메인스트림은 아니지만 전세계에 퍼져 있는 스포츠 중 하나이다.    경기 규칙은 간단하다. 황소 가슴 부위에 매어진 1.58cm 굵기의 밧줄을 한 손으로만 잡고  8초동안 떨어지지 않는 것을 4명의 심사원이 점수를 매기는 것으로,  선수와 황소에게 각각 50점씩을 만점으로 합산하여 평가하는데,  심사위원원들 각자가 각각 25점씩을 만점으로 합산후 2로 나누어 공식 점수로 발표한다.  이때 황소의 경우 경기장내 속도, 힘은 물론  공중에서의 발차기, 방향 전환, 몸 비틀기 등 다양한 동작을 할수록 점수가 높다. 보이는 대로 저 거친 황소 위에서 8초동안 버텨야 한다.  죽음의 8초라고 불려진 이유다.
