Your favorite health and beauty product may be more dangerous than you realize. Many modern cosmetics contain chemicals and compounds known to cause a variety of physical ailments. And many consumers are dismissive of product labels and ingredients lists, putting themselves at risk for exposure to toxic contaminants. The next time you go to use one of your cosmetics, have a look at the label to check for these dangerous additives. 1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) These two chemicals can be found in a variety of products - soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and more. The danger in SLS and SLES is that they are sometimes contaminated with dioxins. Dioxins are potent carcinogens that increase cancer risk significantly. 2. Triclosan Any product advertised as anti-bacterial could possibly contain triclosan. Deodorants and antiperspirants sometimes also contain this dangerous chemical. Triclosan has been proven to easily pass through skin and interfere with hormone levels and endocrine functions. 3. BHA and BHT Typically used as an additive in moisturizers, lipsticks, and other cosmetics, BHA and BHT are widely regarded as cancer causing and hormone altering chemicals. These chemicals are also considered very harmful for fish and wildlife. 4. Parabens Parabens are very common in a wide range of cosmetics, and they are an artificial phytoestrogen, meaning they can cause hormone disruption. Parabens occur naturally, in very small amounts, in some foods like strawberries and barely. When eaten, parabenic estrogens are metabolized by our bodies, making them less harmful. However, when we apply them to our skin in cosmetics, they are not metabolized, which increases their danger. 5. DEA A commonly used foaming agent found in shampoos and soaps, DEA is known to react to form chemicals called nitrosamines, which are highly carcinogenic. Animals studies on DEA exposure have revealed that it may cause liver cancer and precancerous legions.
