Huawei consumer business steams on as ban from UK 5G looms

On Tuesday, Huawei posted a small note that announced its top-level first-half revenue figures. Overall, the company reported a 13 percent rise in sales to 454 billion yuan, a rise of 53 billion last year.

Divided by division, the consumer division of the Chinese giant increased its revenue by almost 16% to 256 billion yuan, its company expanded by 15% to 36.3 billion yuan, and its carrier division reported revenue of 160 billion yuan, up 9%.

The total margin for the first half of 2020 was 9.2 percent, up from the 8.7 percent recorded last year in the first half. The update comes as the UK is expected to bar Huawei from its 5 G deployment as soon as Reuters has announced Tuesday. You can do a company check here.

The move would be a reversal of the January announcement that saw the Chinese firm partly accepted into the UK's 5 G rollout, with a 35 percent limit on the usage of "high-risk suppliers" equipment on non-sensitive sections of the network.

"The limitations and controls we describe in the context of high-risk vendors give us a way to reduce the risk of using a high-risk vendor like Huawei," said Ian Levy, technical director of the United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre.

High-risk suppliers were completely prohibited from providing any equipment at the core of the network, and areas of the network were considered vital to security, including sensitive locations such as nuclear power plants and military bases.

Huawei has been fighting back against backbench pressure for some time to reconsider January 's decision. Reportedly the rationale for the UK reversal is the US moving in May to limit Huawei's access to American technology and chips.

Reuters reported that UK telcos said they would need up to a decade, depending on the extent of the ban, to remove Huawei equipment, and it would cost them billions of pounds. Huawei was barred from 5 G projects in Australia in August 2018, replicating the 2012 ban imposed on the Chinese giant for supplying NBN equipment.

With two of the telcos have used their facilities for previous mobile generations, the Chinese giant recently lost out on the 5 G builds of Canada's three major telcos.
