Common name: Green sunfish, green perch, sand bass, rubbertail
ID: Dorsal region brown with a lot of emerald shine. 7-12 dark, vertical bars. Young do not yet have the bars as strongly. Breeding male have a whitish line along margin of fins.
Life cycle: Spawn from late May to early August. Spawn every 8 to 10 days within this period. Males build nests in depressions in the gravel in rocky, woody or grassy areas.
Where to find them: Lake Michigan drainage basins; quiet pools in warm, shallow waters of ponds, lakes, brooks etc with low currents.
