When a couple plans to get IVF treatment, their major concern is about the total time taken to perform the procedure. The couple needs to understand IVF is not a single treatment instead there are different procedures included in it for 6 to 8 weeks.
Average IVF cycle week by week
First week
The first week is all about consultation and visits. During the consultation, your fertility expert is likely to take an extensive record regarding your medical history. At this stage, you must clear all your concerns and thoughts. Knowing beforehand about the procedure will make things much easier for you. This is your time to know everything, be it medications, or any precautionary measure you need to take. At this point, you should understand in detail how the treatment schedule will work.
Second to the fourth week
At this point, the lab tests are conducted and according to their results, the IVF treatment is strategized for you. No doubt, the procedure is the same for all but it can be different from one person to another. Some of the basic tests which are part of every treatment plan are:
● Uterine evaluation
● Male fertility tests (Sperm analysis)
● Infectious disease screening
● Blood tests
● Ultrasound
For 2 to 4 weeks you need to take the birth control pills to prepare the ovaries. The length of this time will depend on the treatment you will get.
Fifth and Sixth week
The 5th and 6th week is all about the medication and monitoring your condition. Once you stop the consumption of birth control pills, another procedure will begin which is named COH (Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation). However, the COH process can only begin when the ultrasound results have been positive. The diagnosis is done to check the ovaries and uterus.
Seventh week
If the fertility medications show that the fallopian tubes have grown to the needed size, then HCG is done. It helps the eggs to get matured and then it will be retrieved through ultrasound. If the male partner is diagnosed with male infertility then IVF with ICSI ( Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is suggested to improve the chances of fertilization.
3 to 6 days following the fertilization, evaluation is done to check the embryo growth. Those embryos are selected which have the highest success rate once they are transferred to the uterus.
What happens once the IVF cycle is completed?
Following the embryo transfer, the fertility doctor will ask you to get pregnancy tests 2 weeks later. This helps to understand whether the entire procedure has been successful or not. If the results are positive then our health is monitored for pregnancy.
