Austen Spinoffs: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame Smith
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame Smith (Jane Austen is credited as co-author) is same story of Pride and Prejudice. With zombies. The plot remains as faithful as it can to the original plot, whilst still accounting for the inevitable woes to effect the Bennet family during a full-on zombie apocalypse. The story wonderfully folds in details of Austen's original tale with the unfortunate, but obviously visibly present, zombie plague. Mr. Bennet takes more visibly active role in the protection of his daughters: they have traveled to China two times to train under a....frankly under a ninja master, and so the girls are all trained zombie-killing machines. And so we are delightfully presented with a few occasions of Lizzie kicking some zombie butt. One of the reasons this book has been so popular with both Austen fans and those who would rather avoid her world is because of the balance of old and new. The regal politeness of the English countryside remains: Lizzie is still disgusted by Darcy's poor manners, and there is still a high code of conduct. A book full of these codes frustrates those who don't like Austen. Happily, in this book, they can find that stuffiness on one page, and on the next page one of the Bennet girls beheads a recently turned neighbor. The best of both worlds, no? The last reason I really loved this adaptation was that it highlighted the humor that already exists in Jane Austen's writing. Many people get caught up in the world of balls and the romance of Mr. Darcy to catch Austen's humorous wit, but when you enhance this wit by adding zombies, it's harder to miss. Did I mention there is artwork? Oh, there is artwork. Surely you didn't think Smith would leave you without the images of the Bennet's killing zombies! Check out the books cover and images above! I guarantee that those have avoided Austen, or not really enjoyed it the first time around, will find Pride and Prejudice and Zombies a delightful, funny tale of romance in the zombie-infested English countryside.
