An Antique from Pandora's Box
Some mornings are prettier because you stay up just to watch that half an hour before the sunrise when everything feels like the brutally quiet sea. Of late I've been struggling with sleep and I have nothing else to do, so I often goof around the house. My father has told me several times that I should start working out or doing more physical work in order to catch sleep but the truth is I don't wish to. Several things keep me awake and earlier it was daunting to think about nights and worry about my sleeplessness. But one day I was goofing around in my room and I was trying to find some of my father's old novels to read and pass the time. There is a shelf in my house where my mother keeps everything that doesn't fit the entire set up of my home. While scavenging for a novel there I came across a very strange wall clock. It looked like it was a million years old but something about it fascinated my curiosity. The next afternoon, I asked my mother about the wall clock. She was busy with the house chores and didn't pay a lot of attention to my question back then. Later in the evening she found me fiddling with the clock on the roof. She called me out from the stairs itself and asked me where I got it from. I told her I found it on the shelf that both my father and I refer to as the Pandora's Box. I could see that she was super annoyed at me for taking it out and I could almost predict the next sentence that would come out of her mouth "garal garal cheez nikaal leti hai" ( you keep poking your nose around things ). image via : I asked her what's the deal with the wall clock and why is she being so upset about me finding it. She told me that the wall clock is an antique that has been passed on in our family from generations. It had great significance but more importantly sentimental value. My grandfather had passed it to my mother because she was his only daughter. She couldn't find any place to keep it safe and with time had almost forgotten where she had kept it. I asked her if would give it to me so I could get it fixed, with the batteries maybe. She scoffed and told me that antiques don't need to be "fixed" they need to be preserved over time. It's funny but I never thought about how important some inanimate objects become of a history of people. It's almost as if you could wonder about the time and the kind of people who held this before you. Since then I've been an avid collector of antiques. I like to keep them safe and try to collect as many as I can. While there are antique shops that I often walk to and buy from, of late, I've discovered that I can find them on eBay or any other alternative to eBay which provides great value for money as well as some very interesting antiques.
