Preoperative

Surgical technologists are trained in both sterile and aseptic techniques to ensure that the operating room is free of disease-causing microorganisms. They are responsible for setting up the operating room and ensuring that all equipment required for a surgery, from monitors to sutures, is in its correct place, is fully accounted for, and is properly sterilized.

They also perform basic tasks such as checking medical records and patient consent forms to make sure there are no mistakes or misunderstandings.


Before surgery, the surgical technician is tasked with preparing the patient, including washing, shaving, and disinfecting the incision site. They can also help prepare medications and administer them to the patient.

Intraoperative

During surgery, surgical technologists are responsible for maintaining the sterility of the operating room, but they also serve as a “third hand” to the surgeon and the surgeon's assistant during the operation itself. This includes handling scalpels, forceps, sponges, sutures, and whatever else is needed to perform the surgery.

After the surgical equipment is used and returned, the technologist must ensure that it has been fully accounted for and is not missing at the end of the surgery. The surgical technician may also be asked to remove the tissue during the operation so that the surgeon and the surgeon's assistant have clearer access to the surgical site.

Postoperative

Once the surgery is complete, the surgical technologist may be tasked with suturing the incision and applying disinfected bandages to the skin.

After helping carry the patient to the recovery room, the technologist would have to “tie up” everything in the operating room. This includes counting all instruments and supplies used to ensure that nothing is left on the patient. All needles, gauze, sutures, and tissue samples will be properly removed, and the operating room will be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized to prepare for the next surgery.
