There's a 98% chance of a global recession, research firm warns
Warning lights are flashing in the global economy as high inflation, drastic rate hikes and the war in Ukraine take their toll. There is currently a 98.1% chance of a global recession, according to a probability model run by Ned Davis Research. The only other times that recession model was this high has been during severe economic downturns, most recently in 2020 and during the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009. “This indicates that the risk of a severe global recession is rising for some time in 2023,” economists at Ned Davis Research wrote in a report last Friday. As central banks ramp up their efforts to get inflation under control, economists and investors are growing gloomier. Seven out of 10 economists surveyed by the World Economic Forum consider a global recession at least somewhat likely, according to a report published Wednesday. Economists dialed back their forecasts for growth and expect inflation-adjusted wages to keep falling the rest of this year and next. Given surging food and energy prices, there are concerns that the high cost of living could lead to pockets of unrest. Seventy-nine percent of the economists surveyed by the World Economic Forum expect rising prices to trigger social unrest in low-income countries, compared to a 20% expectation in high-income economies. Investors are also getting more concerned, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average sinking into a bear market Monday for the first time since March 2020. “Our central case is a hard landing by the end of ’23,” billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller said at the CNBC Delivering Alpha Investor Summit Wednesday. “I will be stunned if we don’t have a recession in ’23.” Even Federal Reserve officials have conceded there is a growing risk of a downturn. Still, there are clearly bright spots, especially in the United States, the world’s largest economy. The US jobs market remains historically strong, with the unemployment rate sitting near the lowest levels since 1969. Consumers continue to spend money and corporate profits are sturdy. There are also hopes that the worst US inflation in 40 years will cool off in the coming months as supply catches up with demand. The Ned Davis researchers said that although recession risks are rising, its US recession probability model is “still at rock-bottom levels.” “We do not have conclusive evidence that the US is currently in recession,” the researchers wrote in the report.

British pound plummets to record low against the dollar
The British pound crashed to a record low against the US dollar on Monday on growing fears about the stability of UK government finances. The plunge of nearly 5% to just above $1.03 came during trading in Asia and Australia on Monday and extended a 3.6% dive from Friday, spurring predictions the pound could plunge to parity with the US dollar. It recovered slightly as European traders came online, rising back to $1.07. The currency slump follows British Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng's announcement on Friday that the United Kingdom would implement the biggest tax cuts in 50 years at the same time as boosting government borrowing and spending in the face of high inflation. "Serious questions are already being asked about the economic competency of the new government," said Graig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda. "So much so that markets are factoring in a strong chance of a substantial emergency rate hike from the Bank of England in order to shore up the currency and confidence in the markets." The new tax-slashing fiscal measures, which include scrapping plans for an increase in corporation tax and slashing the top rate of income tax, have been criticized as "trickle-down economics" by the opposition Labour Party and even lambasted by members of the Chancellor's own Conservative party. Kwarteng doubled down at the weekend, hinting in TV interviews Sunday of more tax cuts to come, saying Friday's measures were "just the start" as the government goes all out for growth. Former Tory chancellor Lord Ken Clarke criticized the tax cuts on Sunday, saying they could lead to the collapse of the pound. "I'm afraid that's the kind of thing that's usually tried in Latin American countries without success," Clarke said in an interview with BBC radio. British pound hits a 37-year low as UK economy skids The pound has been hammered by a string of weak economic data, but also the steep ascent of the US dollar, a safe haven investment that sees inflows in times of uncertainty. The euro also hit a 20-year low after Giorgia Meloni claimed victory in a general election in Italy. Investors are monitoring what would be the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini, which has raised concerns about cohesion within the European Union. But the pound is suffering more than most due to the economic outlook in the United Kingdom, which faces the highest inflation among G7 nations, and the government's huge fiscal gamble on growth. It has lost nearly 21% so far this year, compared with a fall of 15% in the euro. The previous record low for the British pound against the US dollar was 37 years ago on February 25, 1985, when one pound was worth a little over $1.05. "Should there be any escalation to the war in Ukraine ... we would see further sharp downside in the pound as well as the euro," said Clifford Bennett, chief economist at ACY Securities, an Australian brokerage firm. "One should not underestimate the crisis that is all of Europe at the moment and the pound is more vulnerable than most," he said. The dollar is super duper mighty right now. Here's what that means for you Asian markets and currencies crack The soaring US dollar also sent major Asian currencies tumbling on Monday. China's yuan slid 0.5% on the onshore market to the lowest level in more than 28 months. The offshore yuan fell 0.4%. The rapid declines prompted the People's Bank of China to impose a risk reserve requirement of 20% on banks' foreign exchange forward sales to clients, starting Wednesday. That should make it more costly to buy foreign currencies via derivatives, which might slow the pace of the yuan's decline. Elsewhere in the region, the Japanese yen dropped 0.6% against the dollar to 144. Last Thursday, the Japanese central bank intervened in the currency market for the first time since 1998 to prop up the yen when it hit 145. The yen rebounded slightly following the intervention, but soon resumed the slide. Inflation is a global problem. Here's how central banks are addressing it Stock markets in Asia were also in turmoil on Monday, after US stocks sold off on Friday as fears of a recession grew. South Korea's Kospi (KOSPI) declined 2.7%, Japan's Nikkei 225 (N225) dropped 2.4%, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was down 1.4%. In Europe, London's FTSE 100 (UKX) was the weakest index, but Germany's DAX (DAX) and France's CAC (CAC40) also slipped lower. Italian stocks got a lift after slumping last week ahead of the elections. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday approved a third consecutive 75-basis-point hike in an aggressive move to tackle white-hot inflation that has been plaguing the US economy. Even without the Fed action, Europe is facing a recession due to the war in Ukraine, and China is looking at "a substantially weak growth dynamic" because of domestic factors, the DBS analysts said. "Add on top of that a sharp decline in US dollar liquidity and sharply higher US interest rates, the world economic outlook looks particularly precarious," they added.
Hurricane Ian barrels toward Florida
NHC adds warnings to eastern coastlines and expects Ian to maintain strength as it crosses Florida From CNN Meteorologist Allison Chinchar Ian’s expected intensity as it crosses Florida has been increased and is now forecast to maintain more of its overall strength as it moves across the state, according to the National Hurricane Center’s (NHC) 11 a.m. ET advisory. This will expose more people in the central and eastern portions of the state to damaging, hurricane-force winds. “One important change is that Ian is likely to remain more intact as it crosses the Florida peninsula (due to both its stronger initial wind speed and its faster forecast forward speed), and this now increases the threat of hurricane-force winds on the east coast of Florida," it said. With that in mind, the NHC has also added hurricane warnings to the east coast of Florida. Additionally, it also updated several watches and warnings for Florida up through South Carolina.  This includes: A storm surge warning from the mouth of the St. Mary's River to the mouth of the South Santee River, South Carolina. A hurricane warning from Sebastian Inlet, Florida, northward to the Flagler/Volusia County Line, Florida. A hurricane watch from the Flagler/Volusia County Line to the South Santee River. A tropical storm warning extended northward to Little River Inlet, South Carolina. More than 2,000 flights were canceled Wednesday across the US, data shows As Hurricane Ian is set to make landfall in Florida, more than 2,000 US flights have now been canceled Wednesday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Another 1,600 flights have already been canceled for Thursday, a two-day total topping 3,600 flights. Airlines are canceling flights in order to ensure their aircraft and crews are in safe locations and customers aren’t stranded as Ian approaches Florida. Airports in Orlando, Miami and Tampa are seeing the greatest number of cancellations. Tampa International airport is closed, and Orlando International is closed to all but emergency flights. Several other smaller airports in Florida are also closed. American Airlines, which operates about 250 daily departures out of Miami — its fourth largest hub — has cancelled 583 flights, including mainline and regional service. It has waived change and cancellation fees. Southwest Airlines tweeted that its employees are “working around the clock to track” Ian. It says the storm “is expected to cause continued disruptions.” Amazon is pausing operations at some facilities as Hurricane Ian approaches Florida Amazon is temporarily pausing operations at some facilities as Hurricane Ian barrels towards Florida, the company confirmed to CNN on Wednesday. “We’re closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Ian and making adjustments to our operations in order to keep our employees and those delivering for us safe,” Amazon spokesperson Richard Rocha told CNN in a statement. “We’re in regular contact with our employees and delivery partners to ensure everyone is aware of any site closures or unsafe conditions and will continue to make adjustments as needed.” CNBC previously reported that Amazon had closed sites near Tampa and Orlando, citing notices sent to employees  There are more than 8,000 full-time and part-time Amazon employees in the Tampa area. Ian's 'extremely dangerous' eyewall moving onshore
What we know about Hurricane Ian's size and speed If Hurricane Ian hits at its current intensity or higher, it will be the strongest storm to ever make landfall on the west coast of the Florida Peninsula on record. Hurricane Ian underwent another bout of rapid Intensification in the past 24 hours, with its top-end winds increasing by 40 mph (from 115 to 155 mph) in about 16 hours. Hurricanes undergoing rapid intensification in the 24 hours before landfall have been increasingly common in recent years. This was happened with Hurricanes Michael, Ida and Harvey, among others. What we know about the storm surge: The storm surge in southwest Florida is likely to be like nothing ever seen in the region. Hurricane Charley, also a Category 4, hit the same area in 2004 and brought a max of 6 to 7 feet of storm surge. This could be at least twice as high. Storm surge is expected to be higher than Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm that brought a 9 to 14 feet surge to the Panhandle in 2018. Hurricane Ian's size: Ian is a massive hurricane, which will worsen storm surge and spread damage over a larger area. Hurricane-force sustained winds spread over 80 miles across this storm. This is nearly double the size that Hurricane Charley was when it hit the same region (45 miles across). Tropical-storm-force winds spread also across more than 320 miles, a distance that would reach from Washington, DC, to Cleveland, Ohio. About Ian's speed: Ian is moving at 10 mph, and it will slow down more after landfall — less than half the speed that Hurricane Charley was moving at 22 mph. This will increase the potential storm surge Ian creates, as well as exposing areas to the intense winds and flooding rains for longer periods of time. The storm is expected to slow down after landfall, moving at only 6 to 7 mph and taking more than 24 hours to move across Florida. This could expose areas to hurricane-force winds for eight hours or more, and tropical-storm-force winds for well over 24 hours. Tampa area schools closed until Friday, officials say From CNN's Melissa Alonso Hillsborough County Schools in the Tampa area will be closed until at least Friday, district officials said in an update Wednesday.  "County emergency operations officials have activated more than 50 of our schools as storm shelters to house community members who have evacuated the hurricane's path. Emergency officials need our schools as shelters for several days due to the potential of high winds and heavy rain from this hurricane," the district announced in a post on Facebook.  "For this reason, we will need to close schools through Friday, September 30th, in order to thoroughly clean campuses and we anticipate a return to school on Monday, October 3rd," said district officials. "We hope you and your family are safe and prepared for the impact of Hurricane Ian to our area," according to the post.  Tampa airport closed until Thursday, officials say From CNN's Melissa Alonso Tampa International Airport has extended its closure due to the hurricane. "TPA remains closed to the public due to #HurricaneIan and there will be no departing flights through Thursday. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information. We will share a reopening date and time when it is determined," the airport said. "Extremely dangerous eyewall of Ian moving onshore," National Hurricane Center says In its latest update, the National Hurricane Center says the eyewall of Hurricane Ian is starting to move onshore now. The storm will cause "catastrophic storm surge, winds and flooding" in the areas in its path soon, it added. National Hurricane Center's acting Deputy Director Michael Brennan explained what will happen next. "The eyewall of Ian is going to continue to move onshore for the next few hours and you're going to start to see those water levels rise — that big push of gulf water comes up" in places like Charlotte Habor, Punta Gorda, he said. "That's where we is see the 12 to 18 feet of storm surge inundation above ground level — that's three times as tall as I am. That's really an unsurvivable circumstance that’s going to unfold in southwest Florida over the next few hours." Brennan said water levels are expected to remain elevated through Thursday. "I would expect water levels to remain elevated all through tonight and into Thursday. In addition to that, you’re going to have several inches of rainfall that will flow in and not have anywhere to drain on the other end. It won't be able to go out in the harbors and into the gulf. So you’re going to have a widespread inundation event here," he told CNN. More than 200,000 customers have lost power in Florida so far The state of Florida has surpassed 200,000 customers without power, according to Collier County, which includes Naples and Marco Island, is still the most affected with over 43,000 customers out of power, according to the site. The site also reports that Lee County, home to Fort Myers and Cape Coral, has over 40,000 customer power outages.

U.S. warns Russia of 'catastrophic' consequences if it uses nuclear weapons
The United States has warned Russia there will be "catastrophic" consequences if it uses nuclear weapons after setbacks in its war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin issued renewed threats that he could resort to weapons of mass destruction as he escalated the conflict last week by calling up military reservists and moving to annex occupied areas that are staging votes to join Russia. With his mobilization effort facing domestic backlash and Kyiv's forces pressing to make new gains after their stunning counteroffensive, two top U.S. officials said Sunday that Washington has made it clear to Moscow just how stark a response it would face in the event of a nuclear attack. National security adviser Jake Sullivan told NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the consequences "would be catastrophic if Russia went down the dark road of nuclear weapons use." Pressed by host Chuck Todd about what those countermeasures would be, Sullivan would only say, "In private channels we have spelled out in greater detail exactly what that would mean." Secretary of State Antony Blinken used similar language in an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes." "It's very important that Moscow hear from us and know from us that the consequences would be horrific, and we've made that very clear," he said, adding that the U.S. response would be "catastrophic" without elaborating. Putin has made a string of nuclear threats against Ukraine and the West as a whole since he launched his invasion more than seven months ago. But last week, he dramatically intensified Russia's efforts, signaling he was willing to escalate rather than accept battlefield defeat. In an address to his nation last Wednesday, Putin said that if Russia's "territorial integrity" was threatened, "we will certainly use all the means at our disposal" to retaliate — and added that “it’s not a bluff." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he believes the Russian president. "I don’t think he’s bluffing," Zelenskyy told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "He wants to scare the whole world. These are the first steps of his nuclear blackmail." Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world with almost 6,000 nuclear warheads and 1,500 of them currently deployed, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, an independent think tank that tracks global stockpiles. The Kremlin's thinly veiled threats come against the backdrop of votes being held in four regions in Ukraine's south and east that its forces at least partly control: Luhansk and Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Western officials have dismissed these as sham votes with predetermined outcomes. Putin's warnings also come after a litany of setbacks for Russia. The looming annexation and the nuclear threats have been viewed by analysts as a combined effort to deter Western support for Ukraine, and to stem the tide of a pair of counteroffensives that have left Russia's long-term grip on those occupied territories in growing doubt. Asked if Moscow would consider using nuclear weapons to defend these regions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday that they would be under the “full protection of the state.” Two months into the invasion, Putin's army withdrew from a costly and ultimately failed assault toward the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, instead choosing to focus its forces in the east of the country where it has supported pro-Russian separatists since 2014. However in recent weeks, Ukraine has mounted a strong fightback in those areas too, causing heavy Russian losses and rare domestic disquiet from pro-war nationalists. That has seen unknown thousands of Russian civilians rounded up to be sent to the front lines. It has also triggered an exodus of Russians attempting to flee the draft, clogging border crossings and snapping up available flights.
US Navy sends its most advanced surface warship to east Asia
The US Navy’s most advanced surface warship is showing its stealthy profile in the western Pacific on a mission that may set the stage for the eventual deployment of US hypersonic missiles to the region. The USS Zumwalt is the first in a class of three multimission guided missile destroyers the Navy says will “create a new level of battlespace complexity for potential adversaries.” In the Pacific, one of those potential adversaries is obviously China, and the Zumwalt will certainly get Beijing’s attention. “The presence of a stealth warship will draw a great deal of (Chinese) interest,” especially if the Zumwalt is outfitted with hypersonic weapons, said analyst Carl Schuster, a former US Navy captain. And that time may not be far off. An August report from the US Naval Institute said the Zumwalt will be upgraded next year to accommodate the Pentagon’s Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB), a weapons system that uses a booster rocket motor to fire missiles at hypersonic speed. According to a May 2022 Congressional Research Service report, “the C-HGB is to be maneuverable, making it more difficult to detect and intercept and can travel at Mach 5 or higher … at least five times faster than the speed of sound or up to 13,000 miles (20,921 kilometers) per hour. “The C-HGB is intended to be able to destroy targets by virtue of its velocity alone,” the report said. After making a port call in Guam last week, the Zumwalt arrived in Japan on Monday, social media posts showed. A Navy statement said the warship has been assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15, the US Navy’s largest destroyer squadron based outside of the United States, operating out of Yokosuka Naval Base near Tokyo. Zumwalt dwarfs other US destroyers At 610 feet (185 meters) long and displacing 16,000 metric tons, the Zumwalt is “the largest and most technologically advanced surface combatant in the world,” according to a Navy fact sheet. In contrast, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, the backbone of the US Navy’s fleet, are about 100 feet (30 meters) shorter with a displacement under 10,000 tons. China’s biggest surface combatant, the Type 055 destroyer, displaces around 12,000 to 13,000 tons. But while China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy can’t match Zumwalt’s size, it can certainly win the battle for quantity. The US Navy will have only three ships in the Zumwalt class, the others being the USS Michael Mansoor and the future USS Lyndon B. Johnson. The PLA Navy has six Type 055s active and more are expected to be coming as part of a massive shipbuilding program that has seen the Chinese naval fleet overtake the US to become the world’s largest. USS Zumwalt is armed with 80 vertical launch cells for missiles that can strike land and sea targets as well as anti-submarine rockets, but the Type 055 has 112 launch cells capable of the same tasks. The US Navy says the Zumwalt boasts an array of innovations, most striking among them is its stealthy design. “The wave-piercing tumblehome hull design has facilitated a wide array of advancements. The composite superstructure significantly reduces radar cross section and other signatures, making the ship harder to detect by enemies at sea,” according to the Navy fact sheet. A troubled program The Zumwalt class of the destroyers has been a controversial and costly program for the US Navy. With research and development costs rolled in, the three ships in the class come with a price tag of about $8 billion each, according to a 2018 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report to Congress. That per-ship price tag would had been considerably reduced if the Navy had gone ahead with its original plan to build 32 of the massive destroyers, but that number was reduced to the current three after the service decided the Zumwalt class would need substantial modifications to perform an anti-ballistic missile defense mission, something the Arleigh Burkes could do more cheaply, according to the Congressional Research Service. The ships have also been slow to come on line. Zumwalt was commissioned in 2016, but it took four years for the Navy to accept final delivery from shipbuilder General Dynamics after all its systems were checked out. While movements of a warship are normally referred to as deployments, the Navy is not using that term for the Zumwalt’s current presence in the Pacific, a Navy official said. “While the ship and crew are being tasked as ships normally would be, their employment is part of the fleet integration process of introducing a class of ship into the operational environment and understanding how it can best operate with other ships/platforms,” the official said. Schuster, the Hawaii-based analyst, called the Zumwalt’s movements “more political than military” until the Navy can get those hypersonic weapons aboard. “At over $8 billion each, Navy is struggling to find a mission for these presently lightly armed ships,” he said. Still, he said, it will give the PLA Navy something to think about.
