The National Olympic Stadium (Kokuritsu) (国立霞ヶ丘陸上競技場)
The National Olympic Stadium which opened in 1958 served as the main venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It also hosted most of the track and field events. After the Olympics finished, the stadium went on to become the home of Japan's national football team and a stage that Japanese performers aspired to perform on. After submitting a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics, there was talk of demolishing and rebuilding the stadium. In 2012 it was confirmed that the existing stadium would be taken down in 2015 and rebuilt by 2019 in time for Tokyo 2020. Japan Night was held on the 28th and 29th of May, just days before the stadium finally closed its doors on the 31st. The Japan Night concert was held as both a farewell and as the sign of a new beginning. Thirteen of Japan’s top performing artists joined together to give the stadium a grand send off.
