It's no new news that China has a horrible air quality problem, and it's only been getting worse. Earlier this month, Beijing, the nation's capital, was issued its first-ever 'red alert', a severe government warning that encourages citizens to stay indoors as much as possible and to use extreme caution when having to go outside is necessary. Normally, this causes a surge in online sales. With families no longer being able to go outside, commerce shifts from shopping malls to computer screens, with residents buying anything from first aid supplies to sportswear, so they can catch up on some exercise once the air clears up. Oh, yeah. And they're also buying condoms. Uncommon amounts of them, in fact. According to Taobao.com, a national Amazon equivalent, the gap between condoms purchased in smog-heavy cities versus ones with clearer air widened considerably during the first couple weeks of December. It even got to a point where, by December 10, the number of condoms sold each day was consistently surpassing the number of air purifiers and masks. (You know, those things they probably need to help them breathe?!) The website concludes the surge in condom sales comes with a good explanation: "People have greater concerns of good child bearing [in air-polluted cities] and try to prevent getting pregnant on smoggy days." How To Make Sweet Red Bean Soup (紅豆湯) from China's Guangdong Province (Vegan)
This weekend, I attended my very first traditional Chinese wedding, as two friends who I study Korean with ended up falling in all sorts of love and decided to spend the rest of their lives together. The wedding was completely amazing. I loved being able to meet their families, learn all about their specific wedding customs and, of course, eat a ridiculous amount of Cantonese food. (In Chinese tradition, weddings can serve anywhere from 10 - 12 courses. Ours stopped right at 11!) One of the very last dishes we ate was Hóng Dòu Tāng, a sweet red bean soup served in a thin broth with simmered lotus seeds. I have seen this dish around, especially at the Taiwanese tea house I'm often frequenting, and couldn't wait to try it myself. The soup is a wonderful combination of sweet and savory, and the lotus seed has a nice nutty flavor and texture similar to peanuts. You should be able to find all of these ingredients at most Asian markets. This recipe can be made without lotus seeds, of course, but lotus seeds are full of good nutrition and are constantly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat anything from insomnia to gastrointestinal problems - which is why it's the perfect bowl to end the night with! ------------------------------------------------------ Sweet Red Bean Soup (Hóng Dòu Tāng) 1 cup red beans (You can probably find these canned, but fresh is best if possible.) 15 dried lotus seeds 1 piece dried tangerine peel 4 - 5 tablespoons brown sugar Water 1 - 2 tablespoons fine glutinous rice flour in equal parts of water for thickening to your desired consistency Some coconut milk for drizzling over soup 1. Wash red beans in several rinses of water until water runs clear of dirt and grit. Put into a pot, fill with water to a height equivalent to the length of your index finger - roughly 2 inches - above the beans. Bring to a boil, and let par-boil for 15 minutes. Turn off heat, cover with lid, and let it sit for half an hour to let the hot water soften the tough bean husks. 2. Meanwhile, soak dried tangerine peel in water for 15 minutes or until soft. Using the blunt end of a small knife, scrape off the pith on the inside of the peel. Wash clean, and then wash the lotus seeds as well. 3. Bring the pot of red beans back to a boil, add the washed tangerine peel, lotus seeds, and half of the brown sugar. Reduce to medium heat, let simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the beans are soft. Skim foam off the surface as it forms. Add water if the liquid reduces too much. When beans are soft and cracked open, do a taste test and add sugar to your desired sweetness. 4. To thicken the soup slightly, stir the glutinous rice flour solution into the soup, little by little, letting the heat cook through before adding more. Stop when desired consistency is reached. Dish out into serving bowls, drizzled with some coconut milk, if desired.

Egg Tarts! (Macau 06.13)
I'd always been sceptical of egg tarts before travelling to Macau. I'd never eaten them before, even though custard tarts are popular in England, just something about them which didn't quite appeal. However, Macau's egg tarts (Pastel de Nata in the original Portugese and 蛋挞 in the Chinese) are one of must-eat foods of the region and there was no way my friend Winnie was letting me leave without trying one. So I tried one - and good gracious, I have no idea why I didn't try these before. They're amazing! I don't want to think about how many I ate while we were in Macau....absolutely delicious. (Just writing this is making me crave them!) Winnie was right - there's no way you can leave Macau without having eaten the local egg tarts. I ate egg tarts when I arrived back in China and they were pretty good, I tried egg custard tarts when I got back to England and they were ok but nothing matches the ones I ate in Macau!

Back when I was a kid, a Slinky was one of those toys you were always really excited to receive and play with for roughly 2 - 3 minutes until you eventually got bored and put it down. Sure, you could shuffle a Slinky in your hand and watch it as it flips its way down a staircase, but really - what else could you do with one? Well, this week, a clip viraling all the way from China is proving me wrong - and apparently, the rest of the world too, as it's received almost 1 million views in a mere two days! The video shows a talent competition contestant dressed in a head-to-toe Kung Fu costume, as he whips the Slinky around with incredible skill and variety, with the announcer naming each of the moves as they're performed.
