The Healthy Traveler - Health Tips for the World Wanderer

I am often on the move for work and found that the constant plane travel caused a bit of wear and tear on my general health. 1. Stay hydrated. Even if you have to get up to go to the bathroom multiple times during the flight, drink water. Avoid sugary drinks and stick to plain water. I have found that adding lemon to my water helps me feel refreshed and hydrated. 2. Make sleep a priority. I try to bring lavender scented fabrics with me to help me sleep regardless of the time zone. Turn off the TV, don't buy the WiFi, and simply SLEEP. 3. Snack smart. Airline food - or worse, airport food, - is not the most nutritious option for a traveller. Try to pack home made trails mix filled with nuts and dried fruit. Just remember to dispose of it before going through customs if you're traveling internationally. I once had a police dog jump on my carry on because I had an apple from the UK! 4. Vitamins. There are plenty of supplements for you to take to help you steer clear of travel sickness. Airborne and Emergen-C are great sources of vitamins and all you need is water! 5. Pace yourself. It has taken me a few years of traveling for work to realize that I can take my time. Granted, if I'm rushing to catch a train it is a completely different story, but in the airport I make sure to go to the restroom to wash my face and get ready to face the real world again. Happy Travels!
I fly back and forth from NY to California a lot and I've found that buying a big bottle of water before your flight can change your life haha I agree with @traveller that lotion is a MUST. You get so dry in that icky plane air.
The last flight I took I sat next to a girl who was a professional tennis player. Her entire carry-on was filled with apples, bananas, grapes, and almonds. She said that if she eats airplane food or anything it completely throws off her game. I was inspired!
@sjeanyoon, maybe your mom used these? I use them whenever I fly.
@rachelykim I just got a honey face mist and it makes my skin feel so fresh (and its smells great!) I dont know why I didnt try it sooner!
If you really don't want to pack your own food, asking for a special meal such a vegetarian, vegan, hindu, etc on the flight usually gives you a healthier meal. Once I got a full fresh fruit salad while my seatmate got a soggy sausage sandwich.

Visiting the City of Gunsan in South Korea
Korea has a complicated, heartbreaking history, but in Gunsan the struggle to grapple with the past is especially strong. In cities like Seoul, most of the city was torn apart first by the Japanese then by the Korean war, and then again in the 80s by the desire to "modernize." So when you look at Seoul, you have to actively look for pieces of hardships of the 20th century. Gunsan though was not touched by the Korean war (except for losing their train station) so all of the architecture from the 1920s that the Japanese built while they colonized the country and set up a system of taking all of their food, remains. Gunsan does a fantastic job of showcasing the history while also standing up for Korea and sharing the hardships the citizens went through during this time. It was a great history lesson and I'm thankful that they had so much info in English! First stop was Cafe Teum, an old grainery that turned into a cafe after it was abandoned and in disarry. Then I went to the Hitotsu House, a two story Japanese style house in the center of the Shinheungdong neighborhood where all the rich Japanese people lived before the 1950s. It's very rare to see any Japanese architecture in Korea because it was all torn down by the war or by citizens wanting to tear down what the colonizers left behind. Next was Dongguksa, the only Japanese style temple left in Korea. It was stunning and so peaceful with a little tea house and tons of bamboo. Last up was the rail town and architecture museum which I adored. I learned so much on this trip and I hope you learned something too :) Watch my trip there here:
