A Night on Broadway (New York 06.14)
For most people, on their first trip to the big apple, there are a list of things they want to do. They want to go up the Empire State Building, they want to see the Statue of Liberty, they want to walk up Wall Street, they want to shop on Fifth Avenue and they want to meander through Central Park. Most people would also agree that a Broadway show ranks pretty highly on their list of things to-do. I’ve loved musicals ever since I was youngster- I’ve even been in a fair few myself; Les Miserables, Annie, Witches of Eastwick, Fame – the list goes on. Something about the thrill of the stage, the combination of singing, dancing and acting intertwined to produce a masterpiece, the sparkling lights – I loved it. I could hardly go to New York without watching a performance on Broadway! Bradley had seen various performances on Broadway and I’d seen a fair few productions in the West End but one show neither of us had seen – The Phantom of the Opera. We decided to dress up because…well, why not? (Also secretly I really wanted an opportunity to wear my new dress!!) After a sumptuous three course dinner at db Bistro Moderne, we meandered through Times Square and took a few photos, arriving at the Majestic Theatre in good time to find our seats. The performance was breathtaking. The Phantom was played by Norm Lewis who made waves in the theatre world as the first black Phantom of Broadway, making his debut just a fortnight before we saw the production. His performance was incredible – a role he was born for. As someone who grew up knowing all the words to all of the Phantom of the Opera songs, finally seeing the show in person was just amazing – a night I shall never forget.
