Studies show that OTC cough suppressants don't work very well. Price and "medicine-like" taste of cough drops don't have any correlation with efficacy, either. Coughs respond well to: - honey in hot water, tea, or lemon juice - sleeping with an elevated head, i.e. with extra pillows - sleeping with a humidifier on - avoiding irritants, such as inhaled particulates or heartburn triggers. For coughs with thick, hard-to-expel mucus, OTC expectorants containing guaifenesin (Robitussin, Mucinex, etc) can work to loosen up the coughs.
