AI-Assisted Silver-Lining Clouds

AI-Assisted Silver-Lining Clouds

Sugar, This isn't a random collection of cloud formations, but rather cloud formation denominations. They've been given names based on their shapes, and they could be quite useful in gaining a better grasp of the earth's climate.
This is due to the shallow clouds' conflicting characteristics: a significant impact on the earth's radiation balance and a reluctance to be modelled. In 2019, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology held a Kaggle competition to challenge the data scientists community. The goal was to detect and find the four cloud classifications indicated above using satellite photos that had previously been labelled by a panel of experts. The project itself does not claim to be able to directly address climate change, while we believe it can contribute to a greater knowledge of the subject.

One solution to this image segmentation problem is presented in the following article. The underlying assumptions can be found in the references. The experiment and its outcomes were part of DataScientest Institute's Data Scientist training course.

The dataset is described in greater detail at the end of this article.

To see the model in action, feel free to browse and experiment with the demo: Demonstration of the Nebula project.

Limitations of the research

We inferred that class categorisation may be ambiguous based on divergences between specialists on the location and type of various cloud formations. Exploratory study confirmed our suspicions. We were unable to detect each class's eigen features using cloud surfaces or image white proportions. After a thorough examination of the image's grayscale, we decided to separate pixel luminosity. To find classes, we'd have to seek for patterns in the image and utilise more sophisticated computational techniques like Convolutional Neural Networks (aka CNN).

Strength comes from working together.

We used networks with as few parameters as possible because to memory constraints. We chose two of them through iteration: a ResNet 18 backbone within a UNet architecture and an EfficientNet B1 backbone within a LinkNet design. These two models have 14 and 8.5 million parameters, respectively. The project's fundamental goal was to combine two dissimilar models in order to capitalise on their individual advantages. Loss functions and model optimizers were chosen in this frame to be as distinct as their respective architectures.

The main properties of the derived models are summarised in the table below.

offline data entry services are the secret sauce many organizations have used to improve customer experiences, innovate products, and disrupt entire industries. At CloudFactory, we’ve been providing data entry services for more than a decade for more than 360 organizations. We’ve developed the people, processes, and technology it takes to scale data entry without compromising quality

The authors' diagrams

The photographs were all downsized from 1400x2100 pixels to 320x480 pixels before being enhanced with vertical and horizontal symmetry, rotation below 10 degrees, and gamma corrections before being used. This last enhancement was used to correct for solar strides that were seen in several photos. The first model benefited from a limited number of epochs of pre-training on noise filtered photos. During main training, this would allow the model to focus on lower level cloud properties.

What a lovely wedding!

The examination of both models yielded similar mean results. In some classes, each of them is a little better than the other. As a result, final predictions were made based on a wedding or consensus. Across models, a simple arithmetic mean was applied to each pixel's anticipated likelihood of belonging to a class. Nonetheless, both cloud fuzzy patterns and hardware restrictions appeared to need to be addressed. Pixel activation and surface filtering were used as post-processing techniques to achieve this.

My pixel needs to be lit.

Pixel-level predictions are identified by a likelihood that they belong to the current class. The default threshold is 0.5, meaning that a pixel belongs to the class if the likelihood is greater than 50%. It is now clear that cloud formations have a variety of structures: Sugar appears to have fewer members than Fish. Sugar's activation threshold is lowered, resulting in a larger activated area.

A selection of 30 batches of 64 photos from the training set was used to find the best thresholds.

Surfaces must be cleaned.

The masks created by earlier operations might be any size, ranging from one pixel to the full image. A calibration technique was developed to separate digital artefacts from genuine clouds.

To prevent being caught red-handed while overfitting the data, a simple and arbitrary rule was computed. The 15th percentile surface size for each class was determined using the training set. Finally, all predicted surfaces that fell below a certain threshold were removed.

a few forecasts

Given that a picture is worth a thousand words, we've compiled a list of forecasts below. Sugar (yellow) and Gravel (green) surfaces have been filtered for being too tiny in the first row. The Sugar class has shrunk slightly in size due to a lower activation threshold in the second row.

Results and evaluations

The evaluations were done using a reserved 224 image set that was undisclosed to both models. The table below summarises the evaluation process.

Note: The selected metrics are a Dice coefficient, or f1-score, as stated in the results table.

Except for the Fish class, both the model set and the post-processing increase the individual performances of raw models. Even though the improvements appear to be significant, keep in mind that the tests were limited to 224 images.

A late submission to the Kaggle competition, as a bonus, verified our approach performance by placing us in the virtual 74th position (out of 1500 contributors). Private score was 0.66016, while public score was 0.66173.

Over test and training data sets, our technique produced accurate findings. The last test we ran was model inference across completely diverse photos. We scanned various locations from all across the world in this frame. The model was able to recognise the clouds that it was trained on, and the findings appeared to be consistent. Here are a few instances.

NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) photos are not copyrighted.

Finally, we assert that the proposed solution is efficient in terms of hardware restrictions. In the current frame, further enhancements are still conceivable due to the existence of several tracks. Perform a detailed investigation of picture interpolation algorithms employed during image resizing, for example, or use the gradient accumulation technique to enable more dense model architectures. Finally, we have solid evidence that our model has a chance to place in the top ten of the aforementioned Kaggle tournament.

Conclusion

Using satellite imagery to gather fresh data that is critical to our understanding of our world, analysing even the fuzziest elements like clouds with human-like pattern recognition capabilities, and applying this to an almost infinite number of photos...

All of this is possible because to widely available deep learning algorithms. When combined with Big Data, everything points to a significant increase of the satellite photography domain, which might vastly improve our understanding of the environment.

Acknowledgements

First and foremost, we want to express our gratitude to the entire DataScientest team for their amazing assistance and support over the past few months.

The DataScientest.com institute's data scientist degree programme allowed us to gain a solid and diversified knowledge base. This was a requirement for being self-sufficient and important on data science initiatives like the one at hand.

Our team was made up of four persons who had never met before. We had very little chance to meet due to geographical distance and lockdown, and... we hadn't yet. Throughout our eight-month project, everyone's contribution was critical to its success.

Data management is another important aspect of successful data science projects. We were able to support the entire project from the earliest learning steps to the more sophisticated final ones by using Google Colab / Drive as the main platform and Github as the versioning mechanism for notebooks and libraries.

We credit NASA Worldview, which is part of the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System, for the imagery (EOSDIS).

Last but not least, thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you liked the process as much as we did completing the project. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any additional information.

After School is One of The Hardest Working Groups Out There
I was revisiting some older Kpop tracks and came across the magic that is After School. And it struck me just how hard these girls work for each comeback. Check it out below! Their first three songs were instant hits and blasted them to stardom. 1. Ah! 2. Diva 3. Because of You** ** You hear remixes and covers of this song on Korean TV all the time. Before their debut, Pledis said that their concepts would be heavily influenced by the Pussycat Dolls. The Pussycat Dolls must have loved their style because when they had their Asian leg of their world tour, they had After School open for them! They were already known for their amazing performance skills (((did you see the choreography in the When I Grow Up performance?!?!?!??))) They then began to commit heavily to concepts, starting with BANG. The girls learned how to play the drums to fit into the marching band concept of Bang! And they basically killed it. The next few years were spent making Orange Caramel a HUGE success and becoming mega-famous in Japan. Then they came back with Flashback which is still such an iconic Kpop song today. Every Korean probably could sing this chorus :) Like with Bang! the girls decided to commit to an entirely new concept: They all learned how to pole dance. Nana even showed off the ridiculous bruises she got from training for 6 months. Various members have "graduated" or been added, including Kahi who went solo after her long stint with After School. (She actually founded the group^^) I hope that these girls get the attention they deserve! I love how much they put into their work :)
National Library Workers Day!
Hey guys! This isn't a holiday most people know about but its SO IMPORTANT! It's National Library Workers Day! Alright so you might not be thinking this is a huge deal BUT librarians, library technicians, and library aides all around the world (right this very second!) are helping someone learn something new, discover a new world, and best of all, to fall in love with reading. If that isn't enough for you - Why you should love libraries: 1. Libraries serve a vital social service by helping bridge social gaps. No matter what your background is, if you have access to a library, you have access to literacy and computer training. They give you resources to learn as well as people to teach you! 2. Libraries have been around for 5,000 years. They contain a TON of info as well as trained people to help you find whatever you're looking for. 3. Libraries can act as safe havens for students at school. For those with anxiety or for those who do not feel comfortable around their peers, the library is a peaceful escape. 4. Libraries provide support for job seekers via free access to the internet to search for and respond to job applications, and by helping them to improve their employability skills. Among a thousand reasons why you should be proud of library workers, I'm especially fond of this day because my mom is a public school library tech! She worked at the elementary and middle school levels and has been changing kids lives for almost a decade! (Actually, maybe more than a decade?!) It was her dream job since she was little and even though it took her a while, she finally got her own library :) Look! She's even holding a ridiculously large book as a small child! She is never without a book in her hand, car, or purse haha! (But really that's a bible my grandpa had to swear on to become fire chief, but that's besides the point) Also, my mom has a Tardis in her school library. PLUS! She puts in the extra effort to keep her library up with the times. That means focusing part of the small budget on graphic novels since that has proven to be the best way to get middle school boys excited about reading. Or focusing on responsible internet use, how to do research on and offline, and of course, how to find the books you won't want to put down! So if you see or know someone who works or volunteers in a library, thank them for everything they do!
Kpop Relatables for every Kpop fan. You do this too, don't lie.
Hey everyone! In honor of today being my birthday starting.. 3 hours ago, I have decided to post these relatable and fun kpop pictures I have found and wanted to share with you all. I wanted to make sure you all got a couple laughs and know that you are absolutely not alone in this community. I just found some of these while I was looking up kpop things( like I always do) and stumbled upon them. Thank you all for always being there and tagging me in things i may like. It always makes me feel wanted and like I'm part of something which is something I have always wanted. If any of you ever want to talk or let me know what you want me to post about, you can always message me or comment, my inbox is always open!! Enjoy guys!!! I'm pretty sure most, if not all of us have done this at one point or another. Even I did it yesterday when I watched the end of the dance for EOEO by Uniq when they are grinding on the floor- yes I literally said "I wish I could be that floor." This is true in a lot of ways. Having a bias sometimes does seem better than having a boyfriend. Having a bias as a boyfriend would be AMAZING!! But also I've set my boyfriend bar so high to match my bias, so that's one reason I will never have a relationship. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ! Am I the only one that does this? Ah eye smiles. They hit you right in the feels! The eye smile isn't iconic just because our idols are so adorable when they do it (although it is a big part of it) but it's that they happiness that shows on their face that makes their smiles huge and their eyes sink away to tiny adorable slits. Haha. I think we can all agree eye smiles are dangerous, heart melting things. Who do you think has the best eye smiles in kpop? ^ㅅ^ This couldn't be more true to me. What people who aren't kpop fans don't understand is, we have all joined together and not just became friends and fellow fans, but we have also become a family who support each other and each other's fandoms. Yet another statement that couldn't be more true. Before kpop, I wouldn't have met so many people both here and outside of the Vingle kpop community. Before someone mentions they like kpop i find it hard to take a lot of interest in them but once the word kpop comes up, I break into my kpop loving self. And a lot of the time, we become friends and continue to stretch kpop love across the world. These quotes just make me smile and are over all inspirational to me. I really enjoy how wise and knowledgable our idols are. They are more than people may think. I've heard people say, "yeah they are good at singing and dancing, but that's all they are good for." But we all know that's not true. Our idols rank high in sports, school, languages, performing and so much more, which makes me happy when I read these amazing words they say in their music and in real life. Being a kpop fan takes a special kind of person. We are able to look past the language barriers, the distance, the age differences, the unnecessary and sometimes hurtful remarks from others and still support and love continue to love Kpop and idols with all our hearts. No matter how hard it may be to be a kpop fan, international or not, we still stick it out and support that Hallyu wave all the way!!! As I said before, we have some of the most wise people as idols. This quote from CL makes me incredibly happy and I couldn't have said this better myself. I get bashed all the time by people I don't know, non-kpop friends and even my family always saying there is no point to listening to music that you can't understand, but what they don't understand is music truly IS universal. You don't have to know the words to a song to be able to jam to it. Honestly, since I'm so used to kpop, even though I can't understand what they are saying, it doesn't seem like a foreign language to me. So there is no point to the hating on kpop music and it's fans, because to us, we can enjoy the music just fine without knowing the words. And we are proud of it!! And yes, I have thought about this a lot before. My parents don't really get why I like kpop, but I even said to them, "it could be worse, I could be drinking, doing drugs, partying and hooking up with guys like most kids my age." But I don't really do that. My social life is just a relationship between me and my cell phone. And all of you of course. I really gotta get out more, but I like staying in and doing nothing. Who else has had this problem where your family just really doesn't get that this is a good thing and you could be doing MUCH worse things? This is just a relatable kpop thing that I thought many of you would know about and have also done. There are so so so many pictures of my biases on my phone of the EXACT SAME PICTURE!! I just never know if I had saved it or not. There are times where I'm like "I know for a fact that I have seen this picture," so I screenshot it and when I go through all of my pictures later on, It turns out I have seen it before (a few times apparently) and thought the same thing back then too, so I have multiples of the same pics. These are just things I feel that I want to happen just because I am a fangirl and I do honestly think I can end up with my bias someday. It's true. There have been times where I needed to focus on my studies so I tried to leave the kpop world and I couldn't even do it for a day, let alone forever. Kpop is just to Fantastic to even try to leave. Once we got you, you ain't ever gonna be able to leave. You're in for life. I've done it. I bet some of you have too. Kpop does take over your world, but it's actually a good thing. Since I became a kpop fan, my life has become better and I've met some really good and dependable people who can relate to me as well. Fangirling is my job though, besides my actual job... Yeah, international fans can relate. Being an international fan, you learn to make it work. One of the things we must make work is the distance and knowing we won't be able to see concerts unless we watch the fancams. And even though it's hard sometimes, fancams are fun to watch because there are so many from so many different angles and shows that it makes being an international fan easier. Find your bias idols and groups! Let me know who is your favorite!! The light stick oceans. "Only in kpop can you see the different colors of the ocean" I love kpop oceans; they are a life goal of mine, and I really hope to get to be in one one day. What about you guys? Have you been in a light stick ocean before? Which ones if so, and if not whose would you want to be in most? And lastly, the things that connect us are not only how crazy we are, but that we are all crazy together. Kpop has the ability to bring different people together and give them something in common that most people can never relate to. It makes me really happy when I randomly think about the people I have met from being into kpop and the thing I have learned. Since I started listening to kpop and learning about korea in general I've learned to be more considerate of people and to try and understand people more for what they like and not judge them for it. Kpop has absolutely changed my life for the better and I can't and don't want to imagine what my life would be like without it.
Raising Sharp Readers
Here's an excellent article by Colby and Aliana Sharp, about how they are raising their three (soon to be four) children as readers. Colby is a founding member of The Nerdy Book Club, and I've followed his blog for years, but this insight into how he and his wife foster a love of reading at home provides great tips to share with parents. I've always believed surrounding children with books makes it inevitable that they will explore them, even if they can't read them yet. Corralling them on a single bookcase means books are easier to overlook. Remember, books are competing in most houses for attention. Leave them everywhere--they're not clutter, they're decor:) Be a reader yourself. One of my friends, an avid reader and book reviewer, remembers her mother stirring a pot with a book in her hand. Dinner was often overcooked, but reading was established as something very important! For some of us, local bookstores are a thing of the past, but the internet can allow you to connect your child with authors, keep up to date on new releases, and yes, seek out those elusive author visits, even if you have to drive a bit. Other tips that Colby and Aliana share include giving books as gifts (that's all I send my nieces and nephews. Scour the end of the year best book lists if you're not familiar with new children's books, or give classics that you enjoyed.) Also, frequent visits to the library to ensure you have a great selection--our library allows unlimited checkouts, and I love seeing a child carrying a large sack of books out the door. While you're at the library, be sure to explore all there is on offer--let your children pick out CDs or videos, play with puzzles or toys, etc. Our library has an outdoor space connected to the children's library. Believe me, creating positive memories about the library don't just have to involve books, but they will get kids back in the door when they're older! There are several other interesting tips in this article, so be sure to read it in its entirety, then share with parents with young ones.
