Granola bars are a great snack for boosting your energy level, especially for activities such as cycling. The granola bars we will be making today are based around oats, which are a great fuel for cycling. This is because oats are a great source of slow release carbohydrates, protein, and fats. All of which are essential for cyclists. Not to mention oats are great for people on the go, meaning they won't fall apart in your pocket or squish easily. Ingredients List: Sunflower Oil - 120ml/3/4 cup Soft Dark Brown Sugar - 200g/1 cup Golden Syrup - 2 tbsp Peanut Butter - 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract - 1/2 tsp Sesame Seeds - 25g / 2 tbsp Sunflower Seeds - 25g / 2 tbsp Shaved Almonds - 50g / 1/2 cup Sultanas - 50g / 1/2 cup Chopped Dates - 50g / 1/2 cup Thick cut porridge oats/oatmeal - 225g / 8 oz 1 medium sized stove pot 10 x 6 inches brownie pan parchment paper/wax paper Step 1: So to start this recipe we will want to create our sticky base that will basically act as the food glue for the granola bar, allowing everything to hold together. Start with a pan on low heat. Put a flavorless oil, such as sunflower oil, to the pan. Once the oil is heated add soft brown sugar and golden syrup to the pan. Be careful with the syrup because it is very viscous. Then, for saltiness and flavor, add a tablespoon of unsweetened peanut butter. The peanut butter is optional, but the saltiness really allows the bars not to be too sweet. Then add just a dash of vanilla extract. Heat and stir thoroughly. Step 2: Once the step on is completed, it is time to add in the substance of the granola bar. Start by adding your favorite raisins (ex: raisins, sultanas, craisins, etc.) to the pan. Next add in some shaved almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, chopped dates and stir. After you have stirred the mixture thoroughly, it will be time to start to gradually add in the oats (little by little!). Mix thoroughly. Step 3: Now take your pan off the stove and put your granola mixture into a oven tray. Make sure the oven trey is lined with parchment paper or else your granola bars may stick! It is important that you compact your mixture before putting it in the oven. I find it easiest to compact with a spatula. Step 4: Put into the oven at 350 degrees fahrenheit/180 degrees celsius for 10-15 minutes. The granola should be golden brown at the top once they are finished. Once the time is done, take them out of the oven, cut them however you want, and store them for later use!
Look delicious and pretty easy to make. I'll have to give this a try!
This is great! I usually buy my granola bars in bulk at the store but this will probably be cheaper and healthier!
Home made is always better than store bought :) Thanks for the tip!
I'm going to have to experiment with this. cinnamon raisin? Almond craisin?
Delicious recipe! It's not much different than mine really, I just add a few different nuts. I'll give this one a try! @BikeSnob
