This is one of my favorite dystopian series! Marisa Meyers has mashed up science fiction and fairy tales in a way that appeals to all readers.
The first book, Cinder, introduces the main character. Like Cinderella, she's living with a wicked stepmother, although she loves her little stepsister. Cinder works repairing robots in New Beijing. When the prince shows up with his favorite robot, sparks fly--the romantic sort! Cinder goes to the ball, dances with the prince, and when the clock strikes midnight, she runs off and loses not her glass slipper, but her foot! Cinder is a cyborg, and a romance between a human and a cyborg is just unthinkable.
The second book introduces Scarlet and the Little Red Riding Hood story. But the wolf, a cage fighting champion, has a decency that only Scarlet can see.
Cress, the third book, introduces us to the Rapunzel-like character forced to use her incredible coding skills to support the Lunar empress in her bid to take over Earth.
Meyers has a fourth book in the series due in late 2014. She skillfully weaves existing characters into each new book. Cinder, Scarlet and Cress, along with several well written male characters, have joined together to fight the Lunar empress, and the fourth book promises more non-stop action.
Highly recommended for 7th and up!
