How to make candles

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Your Own Candles

Making candles is a great way to have your own unique home fragrance. Making them yourself saves money, and you can create the exact scent that you want! This blog post will give step-by-step instructions on how to make candles at home.
Start by gathering the required materials. You will need:

- a pot and stove to boil water in (or you can use an electric kettle)
- wax flakes or chips - beeswax, soy wax, paraffin, etc. Make sure it's 100% pure; no additives! We recommend buying online for the best prices and selection.
- wicks that match your candle size (you'll typically want one per ounce of wax used). Wicks come flat but should be easy to curl into shape with pliers if needed. Get them wick dipper.
- dye chips/powders (various colors available)
- fragrances - essential oils are great because they smell beautiful while also being gentle in the environment.
- containers for your candles (jars, tins, or mugs work well)
We typically use soy wax flakes because they are more affordable than other options and have a decent burn time. Soy wax is also environmentally friendly since it's made from plants! If you're interested in beeswax though, that burns longer but costs more money.

Paraffin has a very little scent so we don't recommend using it to make fragranced candles unless you want no smell at all...which can be nice too if you just like how the candle looks with an unscented flame. Beeswax varies widely in color depending on how much pollen was collected by worker bees - some batches will look yellow in color while others are whiter.

Start by finding a well-ventilated area to work in since you'll be melting wax overheating. Create a double boiler with your pot and smaller metal bowl or measuring cup resting inside - that way the bottom of the container never touches the water below which can cause cracking if it's too hot.

Bring some water to boil then reduce heat so that it is just simmering (not boiling). It should gently bubble but not produce any big bubbles! Place about an ounce of wax flakes into your top layer, stirring occasionally until they're all melted down and smooth looking like this:

You want them to look transparent and shiny when finished so there aren't white spots left unmelted from how hard it was to dissolve them. If they're not 100% melted after a couple of minutes you can turn the heat back up slightly until they are, but keep an eye on how much is melting at once so it doesn't boil over or bubble too quickly - this makes your wax unscented which smells terrible!
Now add about 20 drops of color and 15-20 drops of fragrance oil (depending on how strong you want it) for every ounce of melted wax remaining in your container. This will vary depending on how big/small your batch is - just experiment with small batches first before making more candles if needed!

Stir thoroughly then pour into containers that have already been linked with wicks. You can also use muffin tins instead since mason jars can be difficult to remove later without spilling wax.

We like how this batch turned out! It has a lovely pink color with hints of orange and smells great too (like floral jasmine). If you want more fragrance oil in your candle just add drops one at a time until the desired scent is achieved.
Optional (If you want to add candles with jewelry inside). The longer they sit the stronger the smell will be since the molecules travel up into the air that way - so if yours aren't super fragrant after burning for an hour or two give them some time! Once they're ready to light it up and enjoy :) And voila...you've made your own beautiful candles from scratch! We hope these instructions were easy to follow, but feel free to ask any questions about how we do things if something's unclear.

Happy candle-making!

We recommend buying online for the best prices (surprise candles) and selection. - wicks that match your candle size (you'll typically want one per ounce of wax used). Wicks come flat but should be easy to curl into shape with pliers if needed.

Get them here. - dye chips/powders (various colors available) - fragrances - essential oils are great because they smell beautiful while also being gentle in the environment. - containers for your candles (jars, tins, or mugs work well) We typically use soy wax flakes because they are more affordable than other options and have a decent burn time.
Soy wax is also environmentally friendly since it's made from plants instead of petroleum-like paraffin. You could also try using beeswax if you want to make candles that smell how they're supposed to, but we find soy wax is a bit easier and more affordable to work with overall since it doesn't cost as much or require special equipment (like an actual candle making kit). We use the melting pot above for our double boiler because we can melt larger batches at once - this saves time!

- saltpeter/potassium nitrate which helps your wicks stay straight so they don't burn unevenly later. This should be available at most grocery stores in the spice section usually near other ingredients used for pickling foods. - color chips/powders It's best to add these to your wax while it's still in the melting pot so they can dissolve faster. They will add a nice tint/sheen and deepen how fragrant your candles smell later on!

- beeswax pastilles (these are great for making candles that actually smell like what you want) - candle dye chips/powders You could also try using tea instead of water, but we find plain old tap water works just as well. Just make sure not to get any soap or other scents mixed into the mixture since this may alter how the colors turn out when finished!

Make sure to stir thoroughly until all color is dissolved before pouring candles or else spots won't look uniform :) If you don't want too many bubbles on the surface of your candles you can use a straw to blow them off (but we like how rustic they look with bubbles so it's up to you!).
Once you're done making your candles they will need to chill for at least an hour or two before use. You can move them around occasionally if needed so they cool evenly instead of staying in one spot the whole time. Once completely cooled, trim wicks down to about half an inch, and enjoy!

CONCLUSION

We hope this how-to guide was helpful! Let us know how it goes - we'd love to see pictures :) Have fun with DIY projects like these since there are so many ways to customize how your final product turns out depending on how creative you want/need to get. We also recommend giving back through candle donations during holidays (Christmas is coming up soon!) which helps support people who desperately need help keeping warm via a reputable site called jewelry candle.

How Skin Supplements Enhance Your Beauty
The foundation of healthy skin is a consistent skincare routine. Using sunscreen on a daily basis, along with potent active ingredients such as retinol to prevent signs of ageing, vitamin C to brighten the skin, and hyaluronic acid (HA) to restore moisture, can help to maintain or improve skin tone and texture. Even the best skincare regimens, however, cannot solve every problem. This is where the adage "beauty from within" comes into play. If your topical skincare products aren't giving you the results you want, an oral supplement may be able to help boost the benefits from the inside out. It is undeniable that what we eat, including food and supplements, has an effect on our skin. Vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and herbs can all have a direct impact on the skin and protect it from environmental aggressors that cause ageing signs. Other factors, such as stress, have an effect on our skin. Sleep, stress, and inflammation supplements can truly improve skin quality from the inside out. How Supplements Enhance The Benefits Of Skincare Supplements improve your skincare in a variety of ways. For starters, they can provide essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies require for healthy skin cells and hair follicles. This is especially important as we get older. Many of our naturally occurring proteins and vitamins deplete as we age, and supplements help to replenish this loss while also supporting the building blocks of our bodies. Second, they can stimulate the production of proteins or minerals in our bodies. Take collagen supplements, for example. Supplemental collagen is made up of amino acid and peptide fragments. The presence of these in the bloodstream indicates that collagen is being processed as waste and is being removed. This signal initiates the body's natural processes. This causes collagen production to go into overdrive in order to replenish the collagen that is being removed. This will support and increase collagen production in a collagen-deficient system. Aother example is, beta carotene. When ingested, beta carotene is converted to vitamin A, which is responsible for stimulating fibroblasts, the cells responsible for developing tissue that keeps skin firm and healthy, and the deepest layer. Just as the quality of a topical skincare product is determined by the quality of its ingredients, the composition of a supplement is an important factor in its effectiveness. Basically, supplements address a wide range of skin issues, from blemishes and redness to skin tone and texture. Common Skin Issues That Supplements Can Help With The vitamin and supplement market is over-crowded, and every formula seems to make a lofty claim. So, how do you decide what deserves a place in your routine? To begin, decide which skin issues you want to address. Some of the most common skin concerns that supplements can help with are: collagen production, acne, redness and inflammation, and overall skin health. COLLAGEN PRODUCTION A good topical skincare routine includes collagen-stimulating ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, and peptides. Including an ingestible supplement to help with collagen production can result in more visible results. Most supplements promote collagen production, which is one of our skin's building blocks (proteins). Hydrolyzed collagen is the easiest to digest because it is broken down into the smallest forms of peptides and amino acids. The most impressive research focuses on collagen derived from fish scales, though bovine collagen has also been shown to be effective. Finally, the skin should be plumper, hydrated, and smoother with less fine lines and wrinkles. ACNE As previously stated, skin health is frequently a reflection of gut health. According to studies, people who suffer from digestive issues have a higher prevalence of acne or other inflammatory skin conditions. According to one study, people with acne and rosacea are 10-times more likely to have small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a condition characterised by abnormal growth of bacteria in the small intestine. A daily probiotic can aid in the restoration of good bacteria in the gut and the development of a healthy microbiome. Supplemental vitamin A and zinc have also been shown in studies to be effective in treating acne breakouts. REDNESS & INFLAMMATION Stress-relieving supplements may be beneficial in relieving redness and inflammation. Supplements that primarily support hormone regulation, the endocrine system, and other body systems work from the inside out. The end result can range from less inflammation and redness to a brighter skin. In this case, look for calming ingredients such as adaptogenic, nervine, and herbs that support a healthy response to inflammation. These are great for helping to regulate our stress responses and soothe inflammation. Rhodiola, ashwagandha, schisandra, and even CBD can help the skin from the inside out. OVERALL SKIN HEALTH Because each person's skin is affected by different factors, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to supplements. There is no single solution to skin problems. Having said that, there are some targeted treatments that have far-reaching benefits. The Takeaway While dietary supplements can help improve skin quality, especially when combined with a well-curated skincare regimen, the quality of the formula is important. Before trying any vitamins or supplements, consult with your dermatologist to ensure they are safe and effective for your needs, just as you would when introducing a new product or treatment into your routine.

5 Sure Ways To Get Young And Glowing Skin
You may have the spirit of a child, ready to take on the world. But what if your skin tone isn't a good match? Here are the top 5 treatments for looking youthful and ready to face the world... Chemical Peeling A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing technique that removes your skin's top layer. This can help reduce wrinkles, dullness, and hyperpigmentation. A chemical peel is performed by applying a liquid to the face, which is subsequently wiped away. A gentle chemical peel enhances skin texture and tone while also making fine wrinkles less visible. The results are minor at first, but as treatments are repeated, they become more noticeable. If you get a medium chemical peel, the treated skin will be noticeably smoother. Botox Botulinum toxin is most commonly utilised in Botox treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and other facial lines. Botox injections are painless and are administered using a tiny eyelash-like needle. The FDA has approved the procedure, and the benefits are obvious within three days. You will need to repeat the procedure every 3-5 months if you want to retain your wrinkle-free appearance. Dermal Fillers Dermal fillers are cosmetic fillers used to increase the volume and fullness of your skin. This therapy reduces the visibility of the most typical indicators of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Women frequently utilise dermal fillers to make themselves appear younger. Dermal fillers are hyaluronic gel injections that support and volumize drooping parts of the face. Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion can make your skin seem better by decreasing fine wrinkles, early UV damage, and minor, superficial acne scars. It does not work for repairing deep acne scars or wrinkles. Skin may become visibly smoother and more responsive to moisturisers after just one treatment. During the treatment, aluminium oxide crystals are gently sanded into your skin. Ultherapy Ultherapy is a nonsurgical facelift treatment. It is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure for elevating the neck, chin, and brow, as well as smoothing out creases and wrinkles. Ultherapy® results are typically good for two years. Even with natural collagen renewal, the therapy causes the skin to age. The procedure focused on the brow, neck, and jawline. The vast majority of these procedures are FDA-approved and fully safe. Consult your dermatologist to find out which anti-aging therapies are right for you!
Santa Sushi Is A Thing.
So every Christmas, there's the eggnog, the gingerbread, the candy canes, and even that generic variety tin of three different popcorns, but maybe this 'Santa sushi' roll will become a new holiday staple food. (Okay, maybe not because I think the country's still polarized when it comes to raw seafood, but hey, guys! Check this out!) The good YouTubers of How To Make Sushi created a really awesome tutorial of how to make your own Santa sushi rolls at home. And while it's definitely too advanced for a beginner chef like me, it still doesn't stop me from watching the video the whole way through. For those of you who don't feel like watching a 10 minute video of some dude carving fish, I gifed up my favorite parts. Let's watch together, shall we? First, the sushi chef shaves the salmon down to make a perfectly red Santa hat. Boom. Add crab stick and a carrot and the hat is complete. Then, the beard is thrown together with fluffy sushi rice and some seaweed to create Santa's trademark jolly smile. Raspberry juice-stained rice is used to add color to his skin. (Am I the only one who thinks it looks a bit more like Kraang from 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' right now?) Put it all together, and what do you get? Et voila! The Santa sushi roll is complete! So what do you guys think? Is this not the coolest thing ever? Am I the only one excited about this? Would you eat Santa's face too? Let me know I'm not the only easily amused one around here, okay?
Lasers Vs Chemical Peels - What's Best For Your Skin?
Scarring from acne? Fine lines and wrinkles? Pigmentation and sun spots? Is any of this ringing a bell? They do happen, regrettably, and when they do, we panic. We've looked everywhere, from skincare products that claim to remove age spots to lengthy Google searches, expecting to find the 'magic' treatment that can eradicate the skin's textural imperfections and beyond. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Chemical peels and laser treatments, two skin resurfacing techniques that remove damaged skin to encourage skin regeneration, are used. What is the final outcome? Smoother and more rejuvenated skin. Combating skin problems has never been easier, but if you're new to the world of skin resurfacing, it might be intimidating. What Is the Difference Between Chemical Peels and Laser Treatments? Skin resurfacing techniques such as chemical peels and laser treatments remove old skin to promote the formation of new skin. Both procedures are frequently used to treat acne scars and hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and sun exposure issues such as pigmentation spots. Chemical peels and laser treatments are distinguished by the procedure itself. The first, as the name implies, employs chemical treatments to remove damaged skin, whilst the second employs lasers. Chemical peels use different amounts of acid solutions to treat the skin's outer layer. There are three types of peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial chemical peels (for example, VI Peel and lactic acid peels) are delicate and exfoliate the skin lightly with weak acids. Medium chemical peels (for example, glycolic acid peels and TCA peels) are more invasive and penetrate the middle and outer layers of the skin. Deep chemical peels (e.g., phenol acid peels) are the most potent, employing strong acids to penetrate as well as remove damaged skin cells. Laser resurfacing treatments use light beams to penetrate the skin, eliminating one column at a time. Although laser removal is more exact, it is often more expensive than chemical peels. There are two types of lasers: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers (such as CO2 and erbium) offer the best effects by vaporizing the skin. Non-ablative lasers (for example, Fraxel) are less intrusive to the skin because they heat it rather than destroying it. Because non-ablative lasers are less strong than ablative lasers, numerous sessions may be required to achieve the optimum results. While chemical peels and laser treatments are distinct in their advantages and the concerns they address, there is some overlap in the issues they address. A strong TCA (trichloroacetic acid) chemical peel, for example, can give resurfacing comparable to that of a resurfacing laser, or both peels and lasers can be utilized to treat acne and acne scars. In terms of skin tone, the two surgeries are also dissimilar. Chemical peels assist those with darker skin tones the most because they are an excellent pigmentation treatment. People with dark skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation concerns such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to an overabundance of melanin in their skin (PIH). Acid solutions are used in chemical peels to encourage collagen formation, and antioxidants are used to further penetrate and treat pigmentation in darker skin. What Are the Most Common Chemical Peel Types? Vi Peel The VI Peel is a painless, mild peel that is appropriate for all skin types and tones. It is made up of trichloroacetic acid, Retin-A, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C and is widely used to treat hyperpigmentation and repair UV damage. Lactic peel A lactic peel is made from milk and is ideal for dry or sensitive skin. It balances the pH of the skin and exfoliates gently by dissolving dead skin cells. Glycolic peel Glycolic acid, which is used in glycolic peels, stimulates the synthesis of new collagen and elastin by targeting the skin's outer layer. It is frequently used to treat acne, acne scars, and to tighten pores. TCA peel A TCA peel, which is more harsh than a glycolic peel, contains trichloroacetic acid. It is commonly used to lighten skin pigmentation and smooth wrinkles. Phenol peel To address severe wrinkles and discolouration, a phenol peel penetrates the skin thoroughly. When compared to gentler peels, it typically necessitates a lengthy recovery period and may be unpleasant. What Are the Most Frequently Used Laser Treatments? Fraxel Laser Treatment The Fraxel Laser Treatment uses FDA-approved fractional laser technology to revitalize skin. This laser is best effective on acne scars and tiny wrinkles that are mild to moderate in severity. CO2 Laser Treatment The CO2 Laser Treatment uses pixelated carbon dioxide lasers to treat more severe skin issues like deep wrinkles and acne scars. In general, this laser is unsuccessful for treating skin redness. Erbium Laser The Erbium laser is a less invasive and gentler laser treatment than the CO2 laser. The laser increases collagen formation by penetrating the epidermis (the outer skin layer). It's commonly used to remove wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Which Of These Is the Best Skin Care Treatment? It all boils down to your skin type and concerns, in a nutshell. It can be difficult to determine the best course of action, therefore it is always advisable to visit with a dermatologist to discuss your concerns and treatment choices. Not all chemical peels and laser procedures are suited for people with darker skin tones. Are you unsure about your situation? When in doubt, always consult a dermatologist. THE MOST EFFECTIVE ACNE SCAR TREATMENT A chemical peel used to treat hyperpigmentation. Textural changes, such as atrophic or indented scars, respond better to laser skin treatments. A TCA chemical peel, on the other hand, can help with acne scars. Combination methods, which include laser, peels, subcision, and/or dermal fillers, are widely used. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IF THIS IS MY FIRST CHEMICAL PEEL/LASER TREATMENT? With chemical peels, expect some redness and peeling following, depending on the type of peel. Not every peel results in apparent peeling. Post-laser skin side effects may include redness, peeling, swelling, and bruising, depending on the laser used. If you use topical treatments, you should discontinue them a few days before the procedure. You may be advised to stop using retinoids, hydroxy acids, benzoyl peroxide, or other harsh, drying, and potentially irritating substances depending on the peel and laser. As a preventative step, patients with a history of cold sores may be given antiviral drugs. WILL A CHEMICAL PEEL OR A LASER TREATMENT BE APPROPRIATE FOR MY SKIN? If you have any of the following conditions, you should avoid chemical peels and laser treatments: - Active infections in the treatment regions - Will be exposed to sunlight after treatment - Have a history of keloids or hypertrophic scars. - A lack of enough post-treatment recuperation time. - Have a darker skin tone (this applies to certain types of chemical peels and laser resurfacing treatments). Whether you choose a chemical peel or a laser treatment, there is a resurfacing skin option for you!
