Safety Net or Stranglehold? Online Safety for Kids and Teens
Having been that child who could leave the house on a Saturday morning, with the only requirement being "Be home before dark," this article reminded me that a lot of my growing up had to do with getting into situations I had to deal with myself, without parental help. Do we now equate parental love with over-protection? Is letting your child have free rein to explore online any different that a 12 year old me wandering around the extremely seedy Times Square of the late 1970s? I worry less about what kids will see online than what they will post online, because those consequences can follow them a long time. This is a short opinion piece from danah boyd that gave me lots to ponder.
